View Full Version : 318ti NOT A FORUm

Why is there a message board/forum if you are required to search previous posts for your answer.
Maybe people do not want to search for messages by keywords and have it take them 45 min before they find an answer that is close to what they are asking?
Why does it matter if someone asks the same ? It is a forum afterall and people should be able to ask what they want even if it has been asked before.
Yesterday a "moderator" , who will remain nameless (but if you do a search like he recommended) youll find it....unless he deletes all posts like mine (as he said he would - because I am asking a ? that waws already asked) I felt he was rude and talking down to me in a post because I wasnt at his level on 318ti parts....I feel just because I asked a ? I was not currently upto "speed" on, I was ridiculed and told to grow up because I got defensive after I got a cocky answer...sorry about this post but I feel as if you should be able to ask a ? when searching for help from 318ti.org from ti gurus who know more than you.
A person should be able to receive help in a kind manner instead of directed harshly back to you because you know less than them...this will be my last post in this forum because why would I want to post in a place that is ruled with a Dictatorship

well the reasoning is just that some topics have been discussed very thoroughly before, and for the older members that have been here a while, we get tired of reading/typing/responding with the same information that we have already for 3 or more times.
we aren't saying you cant post questions, but just look for the answer before you do, because a lot of things have already been answered.
we are all here to help anyone out, no one is trying to be accosting anyone because of their level of 318ti knowledge.

How is this not a dictatorship? Here no one cannot say what they want without the ruler, in this case a moderator telling you otherwise.

Just an FYI
If you go on any other forum and ask a question that has been answered numerous times you will get the same response.
Use the search button which they all will say..
Just for an example in the past 6 months or so i saw 1 topic posted atleast 8-9 times by different members. If the 1st person atleast searched for it he/she would've got the original thread on the subject. When i see a thread like that i'll search for the original and post it in the current thread then close it. There is no sense of starting new threads on subjects which have been discussed a gazillion times.

You should really chill with the whole dictatorship thing....Go to any forum on the web and trust me, someone will tell you to do a search whether theyre a moderator or not. If you cant find somethin with a search, by all means, post a new topic and if someone questions it, then so be it, dont get offensive, its only a forum. Theres really no need to create such posts like this to call out moderators...if you have a problem with them, you should really send them an email or a PM rather than try and publicly humiliate or flame them. If you dont like the treatment here, find another forum for help or find all the answers from the dealership, manuals, etc.

If its something that he said, then your conversation should stay private, and not to be made a public matter.

drama on the 'ti forums...
I just want to say that I am involved in a lot of forums, and this is one the better ones I post to/read from as far as qaulity, content, responsiveness and general absence of drama.
+1 to Steve S and all the others involved with maintaining it.

Adog2107, I've been a site participant for a long time. Mostly lurking and asking for help, once or twice I've contributed. I'll validate your emotional response by telling you that, in my opinion, DustenT is one of the most abrasive forum members. I think his responses are usually curt and often come off way too blunt. But he is knowledgable, helpful, willing to offer his expertise, and you came to his (and experts like him) territory. You came here seeking knowledge. Which is more important to you at this point? Pointing fingers and yelling at DustenT? Or finding answers. These guys have the answers, and whether you acknowledge it or not you are ASKING THEM for THEIR expertise because you don't know the answer. If they ask you to follow convention, you owe it to them. Their feedback is a privilage, not your right.

As far as i know DustenT is not a moderator,so that would be an impossible task.
Just another FYI,
Dusten is very knowledgeable person about the ti and cars in general and he has helped out many of us on here. There might be a time when you'll need some help/info and Dusten will probaly be the one to help. So if you have any problems with a member on here i'd keep it to a pm or contact 1996328ti who is the administrator of the site.
We are all a friendly bunch of people on here and do whatever we can to help out in most situations..

You also have to remember, youre reading the words someone is saying, no emotions or emphasis on anything....make sure you have an open mind and dont get offensive quickly. Everyone wants to help one another or recieve help from everyone else, thats what the forum is all about.

i think everyone needs to drink more, things are more easy going then.
seriously, if you did ANY research on the downing atlanta supercharger, you would have known they used an eaton blower. the DASC has been covered in SOOOOOOOOOO many threads, it's almost sickening. those of us who've been here a long time tend to get sick of seeing the same questions over and over and over and over again, sometimes we get a little curt because of it. maybe Dusten hadn't had his morning beer yet ;)
chillax and everything will be ok :)

just saying my piece...
ive been hanging around here for ages and i have found this site and the people on it to be nothing but extremely helpful. i have suffered the occaisional jibes and sidways comments but that is all part of being part of a large faceless community (usually due to me making a non-educated guess or stupid comment)
Dusten has helped me on numerous occaisions and i feel that he is probably one of the more valued members of the forum. and if i had a particular querie, he would be one of the first i would ask.
take it easy and relax, there is no-one here who sets out deliberately to give people a hard time.
Dave.

The only thing more sickening than questions about the DASC, is all the people claiming to be getting one in the near future.

Any other forum, you'd be banned already. Asking obvious questions without searching, abrasive, unintelligent replies, multiple off-topic posts.

Ummm... Not that I've been here for all that long, but I've been around digital communities for a good 10-15 years. This one is definitely solid, supportive, and (in general) very positive. In fact, it's something I sought out when I started looking for a new car to play with... a healthy community with a solid base of knowledge to pull from.
If you want to know the truth, the harsh, high noon sun & bleached bones truth, then yes, EVERY forum or BBS is a dictatorship. Someone actually went through the trouble and expense to get this thing off the ground. Someone runs this show. That individual (I don't even know who it is...) at some point decided to call on some trusted members/friends for help. Sure ain't democracy, but it's damn effective in running a tight forum.
BTW, that F/I FAQ is a good thing Dusten... read it this morning.

The fact that you can post this thread pretty much refutes any claim of a dictatorship.
I'm looking back through your posts and see that people have provided quite a bit of help already. What is your gripe with this particular issue?
Dusten: thanks for putting the time in on that FAQ. Much appreciated.

Interestingly no one has pointed out what is probably the best reason for searching for answers before you ask a question:
To keep the information simple to find and make the forum more useful. We're all probably guilty of just asking a quick question, but if everyone tried a little harder to find answers that may already exist the forum would be a much more useful tool. It would be so much easier if there was one thread about DASC (thanks to whoever put up the Forced Induction thread) instead of approximately 1 bazillion. A perfect example is that this topic exists in multiple threads now. What does that accomplish? These are my opinions. Please feel free to disagree.

i agree that dustent is an extremely blunt person and can come across kind of mean sometimes...but he tells it how it is and he knows whats up and he has helped me a few times...id say he is one of the most knowledgeable people here
starting a new thread is kinda lame, i'm not ganging up on you but just relax....
I ask lots of questions that are probably repetitive and dumb i do try and search though but sometimes after searching i need clarification or comfirmation on what i find.
i wish i had the knowledge and time to work on my car but i really don't have either, but i wish i did because nothing is more true than if you want something done right do it yourself.

My two cents,, if there was no 318ti.org with it’s many knowledgeable Supporters I would had spent lots of $$$$ on fixing my TI. Thanks to all with the knowledge at 318ti.org. When one searches for an answer to anything in life, one becomes wiser in the process. As one matures one grows thick skin. My Two cents……………….

Thanks for all the kind words everyone.
Rob said it best, I'm a straight shooter and I tell it like it is. I'm sorry if I come across abrasive sometimes, that just how it is, don't take it personally.
Damn this is too much damn drama for a car forum!
It comes down to this: If the forum isn't easy to search, people aren't going to use the search function. I'm the first to admit that the site could use a little more organization, I think I can help with that.
I'm going to work with the other mods to try to get some more FAQ threads started.
Let's end this discussion and get back to talking about important topics!

German cars = Thread nazis; you should have researched the manufacturers before you bought a bimmer.
Maybe something from Italy or France would have a nice chaotic liberal forum more to your liking..
I would say British, but your not exactly polite and civilized.
Another suggestion would be a f-body forum. I'm thinking firebird and a mullet for you.

I got a nice smile out of that.....I don't see a problem here at all, but I would much rather see these old questions asked again because when I search I get other random BS I didn't want.....it can take forever so why not take the second to ask it again, and it also keeps the answer fresh in your mind....there are only so many things that can go wrong with a car, and I'm sure they have all been delt with by someone, so I guess no more tech sections.........<<<that would be dumb...lol. Anyways, keep up the good work steven, and I'm liking those decals on alaskablue's car......those alone only gave him 25hp......;)

I have had nothing but positive experiences with this site. It's saved me thousands of dollars not only on parts and labor, but maintenence as well.
Think of it this way. Here's a theoretical situation...
I have a problem with vibrations on my steering wheel. When I go certain speeds, it begins to vibrate. I need to consult someone on this issue. Let me post a question here, explaining my problem. Ok, let's see if someone replies... ... ... ... OOh! A reply!!! "Do you hear any noises, does it vibrate when the car is going slowly at all?" Hmm... no noises... Five Hours Pass... questions about braking, etc. are asked.
Finally I got an answer!!!! That's it!!!! It's probably the control arms/bushings! Aw, too bad it's late... Maybe I'll get to it tomorrow.
Instead of waiting all day for answers from people who go on and off the site when they can, do a quick search! If you type in wheel vibration, you will find a thread ALL about control arm/bushing symptoms, replacement, and costs! If you can't after a whole ten minutes, then you might have something never addressed, and you should by all means start a new thread!
Why does it take so long to receive an answer sometimes? Because there are a lot of posts out there, many of which have already been addressed, and people are scanning through all of them, and writing replies!
There are no full-time workers here. Brief, to the point, on topic. That's how it's gotta be. If it's brief, to the point, and on topic, you can use the forum as a knowledge base, kind of like an encyclopedia! Do you write an encyclopedia company a letter every time you have a question about something? No, you research, ask questions. What if it's not there and nobody knows? Then you go to a Library (consultant <mechanic>).
The analogies might be a little off, since it's late, and I've had a little bit to drink, but you get the point.
