Just out of curiosity, anyone know what the likelihood of being able to drop in a 2.0 from, say, the 320Ci would be? I know they don't sell the 4 cyl cars here, and getting one from Europe could be tricky, but ignoring that, any thoughts on the difficulty of swapping it into the E36?

M50B20? It's a six if that's the one your thinking of.
I like those engines, high revs and good sound to them.

I'm assuming that it will be much easier to shoe-in a 2.0 4 Cyl. All the same drive shafts, suspensions, diff, etc.

Ya, I just looked them up to get some more specs and noticed that they were listed as a 6 cyl... the 320 with a 4 cyl is the diesel -- now THERE'S a swap, lol.

Is the 1.995 from the new 318 very different from the M44 -- I can't find good specs for it in english anywhere.

The late model 94-95 M42B18 is alittle different. Although it looks the same at first glance.

Some of the differances.

Forged internals
no oil squirters
ODB 1 electronics
AFM instead of a MAF

the M42? What I was thinking was the engine from a new 318 into a ti (mine is M44)

I am not even sure this question makes any sense, just kinda popped into my mind while I was looking over the new european models.

One of the German tuners used to sell a bored and stroked 2.1 liter M44. I can't remember if it was Racing Dynamics or Schnitzer. If you could get a hold of one of those it should be a direct fit obviously. Or you could find an engine builder here like Korman or Metric Mechanic. That would probably end up being less hassle.

You mean the engine from an E46 318?

Hartge made a 2.1L.

Would almost certainly fit fine, but why? The 'hot' 320si out right now to meet WTCC specs comes with a blazing 170hp and 140tq...for all the pain and agony of installing it and getting it smogged (if applicable in your state :o ) you could DASC or swap an M50 about ten times each.

m-technik_ti,
That was probably it. I couldn't remember. I kick myself on a regular basis for not getting one of those while I lived in Germany. Oh well.

Conclusion: this is a dumb idea :). hehe. But it would work... in theory.

I'm not sure what year your car is, but if you have an M42 and you want to build up an engine you should check out this thread

This guy had a fantastic motor built by Metric Mechanic. It was the first M42 they have done and apprently it turned out very well. At any rate, it makes for an interesting read.
