cam swap

ive heard two different things on the matter
1. i would have to remove my engine to slide out the cam shaft
2. i would not need to take the engine out, the cam shaft does not need to slide out in my motor (m42)

i know its expensive for ~15 horsies, i was just wondering which is true

You don't need to remove the motor, the cams come straight up. (There are two). Look at pelicanparts.com for a writeup.

To really get the most out of a cam its worth having a
knowelgeable person degree the cam(s) in.

My engine gained 5hp just by this little act. Cost between 1 and 2 hundred. depending on the hours required, and if you have it ready for him to work on...

pdxmotorhead, i'll look into what you said. seems more reasonable than the $500 - $1000 it would cost me for new cams (bavauto being my resource there)

Yea, when I rebuilt my jeep engine the builder assembled it for me I installed it and he had degreed the cam originally, but after I got it running he fine tuned it and it made a nice gain. (5hp) We did this trying to slide as close as possible to the peak power and still pass emissions testing....

Of course on the M42/M44 engine its hard to say how deep he needs to get to get at the cam drive sprockets.

You might need new cam gears to truly adjust it...
Which I would only do if I was putting in a new cam...
Sometimes it just takes offset keys to get a cam "in".

The m42 has stock adjustable cam gears. All you need to do to get to them is remove the valve cover.

What about tuning the M44 cams? I haven't seen the motor without the Valve Cover Plate though.

The M44's cams aren't adjustable.

Funny I'd only seen a M44 apart and assumed the M42 had the same setup.. :) and I own one... :redface:

Its worththe hassle any time you install new cams to do the whole job, degree em in. It pays back later....
