while trying to install a DASC, this evening, I accidentaly broke of a nozzle of this plastic piece of s#$% part (on photo below)... however, I need an actual BMW part # so I could order it.. it sits right under the intake manifold, and it is attached to the block (not on photo as it has already been taken out of the car) - has 3 hoses coming out of it (2 smaller ones & 1 large) - and had coolant running through it (now all over my garage floor!)...

Did you check www.realoem.com ??? I don't know what year model or engine you have, but it looks suspiciously like #1 on this drawing (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CG73&mospid=47506&btnr=11_1558&hg=11&fg=10). Be sure to put in the info for YOUR car to be sure you get the right part number.

Good luck with the rest of the DASC install!

Just please be sure to go back to the main page of the site and input the details for your specific car. The exact part number you need might be different from what my car needs. Sure, it's unlikely, but it takes a lot less time to check before ordering the part than it does to re-order the part. :-D

Also... be sure to bookmark http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do for future reference!!

Marko- Check out this thread. Several of the experienced DASC members recommend replacing that part when you do the install. There is another part you should think about changing as well.

absolutelly... I just did that using year & month, further, I'll do it one more time using actual VIN just to make sure. again, thanks!

That picture looks like part of your thermostat which is located in the same spot you have mentioned.

Nope it's one of two plastic coolant lines that are notorious for breaking. The other is a "Y" shaped one. Both are behind the engine. If you ever take the intake manifold off or if your car has more than 100k miles, CHANGE THEM! They are a mo-fo to get to and will destroy your motor if/when they break. I'm doing mine this month as well as the water pump, T-stat & radiator. What's $200 if it gets you another 100k miles down the road.

Alright, you guys have me nervous. I'm due for a coolant change relatively soon, and I'm gonna replace these, plus ALL of the hoses and the water pump. If you pull the intake manifold, can you access both of these things? Do you need to pull the lower intake manifold as well, or just the upper? Can it be accessed from underneath?

Does anyone know of any pics of the backside of the M42 or M44? Possibly from a pulled motor.

EDIT: Here we go. M44

I think the only way to actualy fet the 'connector' off is to take out the upper & lower int. manifold (including the fuel rail)... though I could be wrong.

here is a picture taken from the driver's side, once I removed the manifolds/fuel inj./rail... you can actually see the bulls%^& plastic part that snapped on me, leaking coolant all over my garage (and off course stopping my otherwise great progress on the DASC install)!

I can figure that back one is a bugger, does removing the cabin filter cover help?

The other one under the intake, does it requir removing the entire intake or just the upper half? I am getting ready to replace all the hoses and such and I want to get these as well as I am about to roll 100,000 miles.

thanks,
David Ellsworth

From marko's picture, it looks like the lower intake section will need to come off.

The cabin filter cover is probably nessesary to get the back one. One of the hoses coming from the back one is shrink-rapped to the valve cover breather hose. See picture above. I tore that breather hose and was going to replace the shrink-rapped pair, but the lower hose was super hard to see, let alone remove.

Here's a pic with the air duct installed:

And another with the air duct removed:

It looks like there's significantly more room with the air duct/channel removed. Probably still a mother to get out though. Looks like I'll be ripping apart my engine this summer. ;)

Does anyone know if the heater core inlet/outlet nozzles are plastic? It would suck major a$$ to break one of those.

Yeah, I think you will have to take of the upper+fuel rail+lower intake in order to get to it...

sorry, I do not know about the other plastic pipe, as I did not try and remove it yet... honestly, I did not have the heart to go back into the garage and face the carnage that my car has become...

once the 2 plastic pipes have been delivered & I re-start the DASC install, I'll try and find out about the other one...

PS- expect a fuel leak once removing the fuel rail (do it with a super cold engine & release the residual fuel in the rail by means of the little valve on top of it, BEFORE HAND of course!).

One last thing.. I think this may depend on a particular year (mine is a '99) but in order to get the intake manifold off, you maye have to disconect a whole bunch of stuff which is wired right through it. Therefore, do yourself a favor and MARK them ALL, unless you have photographic memory... good luck.
