Did you see BMW is making the 1 series as a 3 door hatch. I doubt it will make it to the US, but it is still cool.

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2007/01/16/034061.html

I would get the 118d, same performance as our 318ti but it gets 60 mpg combined.

The 130i would of course be nice, it is even faster than the 5 door version and it still gets 34 mpg.

I imagine those figures use imperial gallons, so it would be 50 mpg and 28 mpg respectively, but that is still darn good.

They have PR'd a 135ti in Germany with the 335's Turbo(although IIRC it's a single turbo)

The 130 is already fast, the 135ti would be insane. Isn't that around 300 hp stock? I dare say it would be a blast to drive. I probably wouldn't want to own it, but just drive one on occasion. Like I said, if they actually offered one for sale here I would probably go with the 4 banger.

i think it looks nice....

the 118d is a crazy car... for a small diesel the power is really good and the 0-60 beats a 318ti....

They keep saying we're going to get that car here. What they haven't said is how many doors and which engines. I'd be really surprised if they ever offer a 4 cylinder here again since that doesn't fit the marketing departments self-imposed image of what BMW is supposed to be. Whatever we end up with, I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm told it will be something enthusiasts will like.
The Euro is killing us.
135 FTW :)

I think the latest rumors I heard were for a sedan and convertible. How bland, but people would buy them. They need to be sure to bring at least one of the hatches, 2 or 4 door, a 4 cyl option and a 6 cyl option. Since diesels have a lot of hype in the US right now, I hope they pick a diesel option. They could bring the 4 cyl diesel for economy and the 6 cyl gas engine for performance.

I wouldn't be surprised if they wait to see how the Volvo C30 does before deciding to bring a hatch over. I would much rather buy a 1 series hatch over the C30. I like the C30 okay, but it just won't have the same feel.

I think Germany is expecting the dollar to do better against the euro, which is why they have been delaying the car until now, I think we are looking at a 2009 model. Automakers are expecting $4 gas in the next decade so we certainly will see more economical options.

1-series cars in our market will be two-door versions only.

Stupid. The guy I bought my Ti from was selling it so he could get an Audi A3 to facilitate the child seat thing. A 4-door HB is practically an SUV, or SAV in BMWese. Stupid not to tap into that.

130/135/118turbo would be very cool though.

I agree, now that I have a child I find the 318 a little awkward, although it still works well for child seats, it is just hard to get the child back there. I would buy a 4 door hatch over a 2 door hatch, but it isn't a deal breaker because we can always use my wife's Mazda3.

Sounds good and all, but I'm calling an issue with the subframe and diff mount. My dad's M roadster tore the whole rear end out with regular driving with a measly 240hp motor. AFAIK, the 1 series is also unibody like the Z3.

CirrusSR22
01-19-2007, 01:11 AM
I wouldn't be worried about the subframe. The 1 series has a massively different suspension/subframe set-up vs. Z3's

I doubt we will see the 3door hatch. The mini has that market to it's self, why would BMW compete with their own product?

SDKmann
01-19-2007, 02:27 AM
Because they are letting Mini go soon, Mini will be breaking free to become their own company. And the Mini Cooper S starts at 23k where the 135i would be much more, they would be on two completely different levels. This is sweet, I cant wait!

I scarfed a 2007 120d 3 door, which gets 48.7 over 12,000 miles [not imperial ones], much quicker than the 98 318ti I passed to my wife [don't asked how I made this work], still getting used to all the power from idle up to 4,000 RPM, and it will lite up a set of 225-40 18 Run Flats and has hit the speed limiter at 247 KPH.

Dudes, all I wanna say is with gas heading over $4/gallon for regular...BMW might want to think about importing the 4 bangers. I think a lot of people could appreciate 30+ mpg:

People think my ti is a 6-cyl all the time, as it's debadged. When I tell them it's really a 1.9L 4-cyl they go "Ohh..." dissapointedly. Recently however, I've followed this up with "But it DOES get 30mpg, and is still decently quick." They act like they just had an epiphany.

"30mpg...in a BMW?! Oohhh God! It's not possible! And still fun to drive?! Whhaatttt?!?!"

Someone asked me today where they can buy them. He thought my 97 was a newer model.

Anybody have updates on the 1 series hatch? The more I've been reading about them the more I want one, and I'm really not trying to have to import one from Europe...:anger:

If they actually come here I was thinking I could purchase one used when I'm out of university in 3 years for a decent price.

Well, as long as BMW owns Mini, I'd say the odds of us seeing the 1er hatch are nill. Even though it would probably be priced a bit higher, it would still eat into sales and I don't think they're willing to let that happen.

I was in Germany in 2005 and the hatchback was the only 1 series I saw. Maybe with the instant auto downsizing occuring in the US, BMW NA will have the sense to bring in the 1 hatchback.

I fell in love with the e46 1-series hatch. I saw it a few years ago when I was in Dubai. That was before I fell in love with bimmers. I searched for it state side and was disappointed that they didn't bring it here. Hopfully they get there sh*t straight and bring it on over. They need to recognize the growing demand for hatches. We are going to be replacing our SUV with a Mazda 3 hatch in the next few months. I would gladly rather have a 135ti :)

Could be wrong (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I am), but I think the hatchback was the only body style available until they decided to bring the 1er to the US, and started designing the coupe and convertible. I know I never saw pics online of the coupe or 'vert until I heard about it coming to this side of the pond.

the E46 is a 3 series, the 1 series is classified as an E81, E82, E87 or an E88 depending on the body style

That is quite true, but it's kind of a futile argument.

Patty, I don't have a direct answer. I saw a 123 or 128 or whatever it was diesel hatch on euro ebay with about 9000 miles for about 17000 euro. It was pretty. I have no idea what it would be like to try to import it personally, though.
