Woke up today and said to myself, "My car sure would look nice with a set of Style 42's." My car is a 97 318ti Sport. The wheels are 17"X8" et20 style 42's from an e39. The tires are 215/40/17's, Michelin Pilot Sports up front and Toyo Proxes on the rear. After spending about a month refinishing the wheels, (sandblasting, polishing and painting) I finally mounted and balanced the tires last night. This morning I mounted the wheels on the "Tizz Eye" and cleaned her up a bit. The rears rub a little, so tomorrow I'm going to roll the fenders. I took a few pics, though they're not that great. Anyway, let me know what you guys think:

Yeah, I'm lookin for a good deal on a set of the OEM euro tails. I also plan on blacking out the kidney grilles and buying a front lip pretty soon. You can't really tell from the pics, but I made a custom black honeycomb aluminum mesh lower grille. It looks better than the plastic M3 mesh.

Thanks for the compliments guys! The car needs a paintjob. I bought it on eBAY from a guy in Michigan, so there's a little rust. Small spots below each taillight and on the bottom of both rear fenders. The paint already started to chip there, so I'm not too concerned about messing it up a little more. We'll sort everything out when I get it painted. Thinking about a Charcoal Metallic or Alaska Blue finish.

It's funny you should mention that. Two weeks before I bought this car, I bought an Avus Blue one! It was a 97 also, but it wasn't a Sport model, so I sold it after only having it for a week. It had a set of M Contours on it which were pretty nice, but I wanted the M Tech body, Sunroof and Cruise Control. I found this black one on eBAY and flew to Michigan to get it. My Avus 318ti sold 2 hours after I parked it on Main St. with $4000 written on the windshied.

Looks good on the ti! Clear tails and tip on tail pipe will make the rear end even better. Any front closeup pics of the mesh grill?

Looks great, shinier than new!

I cleaned mine at the weekend, full on claybar, 3 stage wax. Its a shame when you go for one drive and its mucky again; damn winter! :)

Looks very good and very clean. I always have liked the look of a dark colord car that is tastefully modded and doesn't have tinted windows.

Thanks for all of the compliments and kind words everyone has given. I rolled the rear fenders today with a block of wood and a hammer. I DO NOT recommend that anyone else do this as I chipped the paint in a couple of spots. In my case, both rear fenders have a little rust on the bottom edges which will soon be repaired so it wasn't a big concern. I did re-seal it with primer and touch-up paint though and you cant tell unless you run your finger under the lip. With just me in the car it doesn't rub, but when I took my roomate for a spin, it rubbed a little on the driver's side. So tomorrow I'll hammer it a little more. Also when backing out of a steep driveway, the spare tire carrier scraped pretty bad, so I'll be removing it as well. The springs were from a Z3 roadster and the ride is really smooth. They're H&R Race Springs and I think they lowered the car about an inch more than the H&R's designed for the 318ti. Next week I'm getting new struts. More than likely fitment for the Z3, since I think the spring perch is a little lower on the strut body and I want my front fender to be even with the top of the tire. realoem shows the roadster and the ti share the same kingpin(mounting bracket) which means they'll fit, but the part#s are different for the actual struts. So tomorrow I'm going to autozone to physically compare where the spring perch is located on the two oem struts before I order a good set.

Here's a pic of the mesh I used for the grille. It was silver aluminum, so I cut it to fit and painted it semigloss black:

That's awesome Bill. Just swap them without telling her, she probably won't notice. BTW, if you do this, you'll need hubcentric reducers since the centerbore on e39 wheels is 74mm and ours is 72.56mm

Since your car is lowered, you'll more than likely have to roll the rear fenders a little. Mine only seemed to rub when I accelerated hard. Also, I'm not sure if everyone else's Ti is like mine or if the previous owner did this, but the center of the rear fenders were partially rolled(about a 10" section). The car had the stock 16" Sport 5 spoke wheels (style 18's) and stock Mtechnic springs when I bought it.

Here in CA it's illegal to tint the front side windows though people still do it. I used to be a cop, so I kinda understand it. I didn't like walking up to cars and not be able to see the occupants hands. Besides that, my eyes are very sensitive because I worked nights for 15 years, so I can't go anywhere without wearing sunglasses. Tint+Shades don't work for me so I left the windows alone. For now atleast. If I do decide to tint, it will most likely be a Bronze and VERY light, enough to see all the way through the car, but I really don't feel like messin up a good thing.

In keeping the tradition of my extremely long posts on this forum, I'll end this post with a picture of the front lip that I've been eyeing. This particular lip is designed to fit under a factory M3 lip, but I'm thinking about mounting it directly to the bottom of the bumper, without the OEM lip:

What kind of wax and car wash technique did you use?

Lol, the cheapest stuff I can find!!! I wash my cars with dish soap (Dawn) and warm water. Then I spray the trim and moldings with Turtlewax F21, it's a little better than armorall. I used to use a product called "black chrome," It worked awesome, but they discontinued it. Then I soak the tires with any kind of tire foam product, this time I used "tough stuff." While all that stuff is drying I apply the wax. This time I used Meguires Gold Class. After the wax I spray this finish called Nanowax by Eagle One, I think. Then I wipe all of the trim and moldings off and polish the wheel lips with any kind of metal polish. I'm using Blue Coral, it's the same thing as mothers.

dude, dont use washing up liquid on your car!

it will rip every last drop of protection you have on your paint, leaving it to get totally f´ed up with tree sap and bird dookie..

and will dry it out totally also!! so it´ll get that dusty tired look :sadblink:

drop a few bucks for some regular car shampoo, if you want the bm to stay looking as good as it does ;)
