S52 > M54 > S50... maybe.

The M3 S52 motor is very reliable and powerful. Put a turbo on there and you're looking at S54 power or more. The torque is pretty much the same for the S52 and S54. S52 is 240 hp, M54 is 231. M54 won't work in the 318ti though... so I'm not sure why you're talking about that. The M54 uses drive-by-wire and other crap the E36 can't handle. If you want to go really detailed, the S54 is technically in the M54 family and beats the S52. 320 hp vs 240... but similar torque numbers. Also the S54 might explode on you!
