128i at $29,375 and 135i at $35,600 (from 1addicts.com)

I'm still in for a 135i with sport, premium, ipod/usb, and ass warmers. It's about $600 more than most people predicted.

Edit: the above prices contained destination charges as well:

Fortunately they'll likely produce enough of these things that you/we won't have to pay over MSRP for it. I'm thinking maybe BMW European delivery can pay for my '09 trip to the Nurburing.

I think that this price will do this car in.

$ spent vs perceived value -> Small niche appeal

I think it's fair. Look at what a low-end 3er cost now. It'll keep the civic kids from buying them that's for sure. They are aiming at the Audi TT/A3 market.

Awesome! You're 7 months ahead of me. Mine is on 4/8/09. Congrats.

I'm still unsure about ED, but it's likely. The only thing that's got me on the fence is that I was just there a couple months ago. Well, that and attempting to shoehorn my two teenage daughters in the back seat of the 135i and driving to the UK with luggage for four.

True, and it will absolutely eat both of those cars for lunch.

Why not? You should be able to use membership rewards, or do you work for BMW? (which is a possibility, seeing where you live)

I think the A3 will go the way of the C230 and the Ti... in the US at least.

I tend to agree. The dealership uses them as loners here, likely because they didn't sell...

Dusten,

Your first comment about BMW going for the A3/TT market seems to contradict your last statement.

I stand by my statement.... niche player, small sales numbers.

But I hope I am wrong and I can still buy '1' in 3-4 years.

At the most it will be only $500.00.
I work for BMW CCA.

I think the A3 is the reason we aren't seeing a hatchback version of the 1er.

Very cool.

Seeing the 1er closely resembles 3er pricing, I would expect the $500 reward likely. Now we only need invoice pricing for US Port of Entry and ED list and invoice pricing. :D

I dunno if I agree with that. I think the 318ti is the reason why we won't see a hatchback. As popular as the car is here on this board, it's still shunned elsewhere. It sold horribly in the US, due to the perceived cheapness factor. I think that's the reason they are waiting until the coupe version is out, to even introduce the 1er at all to us. Also, they will never have the smaller engines in that car here either, to protect the "premium image" that they feel was tarnished by our cars.

Hard to say, but honestly I've had enough market speculation. I'm going to trust that BMW knows what I want, and be happy.

Strangely enough, this price was released at the prime time for me. I'm about to turbo my m3 and this is making me reconsider...

oh no shhhhhhh they are listening.

i wasnt supposed to let this leak but they are releasing a hatch version but only for ti owners, they are going to give us a new hatch if we currently own a ti since they feel bad about the windows and the ongoing problems with guides and motors.

they are finally making it up to us.

but shhhh this is just between me and you.

Just to confirm, my sales guy just emailed this to me:

Hi Dusten,

Thought you would like to know that BMW just released the base price for the new 1-Series:
128i Coupe: $29,375 (with destination)
135i Coupe: $35,675 (with destination)

Hope you are doing well!

Thanks,
Chad

Now much cheaper than a 328/335 sedan. (2-3k)

About 6k less than a 328/335 coupe.

I guess my choice will be made on how small the 135 feels.

StealthBimmer
11-15-2007, 06:15 PM
The price is close to what people were expecting. This is a BMW and not for everyone that wants a cheap pocket rocket. We'll see once the 135i comes out if it will make it or not. I think it will since most of its competitons are priced around the same range and performance wise.

A hatch can sell if it's marketed right. Look at all the other companies selling a hatch. Some of them actually are selling quite well. Just need to price it right (niche) and people will buy.

Somebody's buying them. We were going to get one for my wife this past summer, but couldn't get one. We found two in the country that had the options we wanted, but they were sold before we could get them transfered to our dealer. These figures are worldwide, but it doesn't look like they're hurting. BTW, these are very nice and I'd be all about getting one if they were rear drive.

Yeah, but they only come with the 3.2 liter and the auto stick. And a price tag. Base on those is $34,915. At that point I'm way past the 128 and close enough to the 135 to drop the extra $1k for that. I'll probaby get flamed for this, but the A3 looks better to me than 1er. Especially the hatchback (I know, we're not getting it) version. Since I have no plan whatsoever to get rid of my ti, I'm thinking I might just pick up a WRX that's a couple of years old. I could buy it, modify it like I want, and still probably have 10k left over compared to buying an A3 or a 1er. Or maybe I'll just DASC and Nick G the ti. Or pay off the wife's student loans:eek:.

I agree, the 1 series hatchback is ugly. It looks just like the mazda 3. I saw a bazillion of them in Amsterdamn and got over it.

This is the 130i 5 door, M Sport Packet. Seems okay to me. I've seen them modified to look pretty darned good. The stock, non-sport look bland to me, but plain-jane cars normally look blah to me anyway (without a sport package, or body kit -only if not over the top).

i think the a3 looks better than the 1er, but i'm willing to bet it doesn't drive as well.

i thought they should have brought the first gen a3/s3 over instead of trying to market the r32 golf as a $30k+ car at the time. a proper s3 1.8t maybe. in fact, last gen vw just messed everything up for themselves by trying to sell weird high ends like the phaeton and toureg (as nice as they might have been), hurting audi image/sales, and now they're trying to re-adjust to their bread and butter, the young golf/jetta crowd. i'm just glad bmw doesn't have a lame german scientist trying to sell a car to me.

I've had a rental A3 2.0l turbodeisel with sports package/6sp in Germany, earlier this year. That car was a pretty fun car, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing (///) signs and planting foot for as long as I could. It never seemed to hit a rev or speed limiter, but obviously couldn't go faster than ~210kph (130mph), but it was rock solid. Pretty fun on secondary roads too, which are twisty and undulating.

Same here, the A4 I rented in Germany hit 220kph but never hit a limiter. The people we were staying with had the same car and swore up and down that it was limited to 200, I showed him otherwise. :)

I dunno, I would call $2300-$3500 (http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Experience/Events/EuropeanDelivery/CostSavings.aspx) quite a bit of savings. It can pay for a pretty decent week-long vacation for two driving around the autobahn at legal 140mph speeds. :) That alone is pretty priceless.

The $3500 basically pays for your trip, so in the end you GET more, but spend the same. Savings = not much. Still worth it.
