316 ,,318 ti difference

hey,
Im the owner of a 318ti 1998 sport, peach of a car. ive been offered my mates 316 1996 compact for the price of a few beers, think its pretty basic compared to mine but was wondering if it would be any good for spares. theres a couple of thing i like like the mirrors and alarm but what about some other parts like the steering rack( as i think thers a bit of play in mine) and the nice exhaust, was wondering what parts would fit as i know it a diferent spec and so on. any help would be appreciated, cheers billy

i would think much of the mechanicals would be the same. you could confirm by comparing part numbers at www.realoem.com/bmw (just use the last 7 digits of the VIN for each vehicle and then see if the part numbers for particular things match up). i would have to think the steering rack and cat-back exhaust would be the same and likely the alarm will as well.
