I just wanted to hear any experiences you guys had with aftermarket exhausts. I am definately looking at getting something and need to get some feedback from you guys.

I was lookin at a triflo exhaust, any suggestions??

Look at the other link that Dan Burger and I hve going on about our Bosal Brospeed exhaust.

I've already read that one thanks. What about other exhaust manufacturers? How do you guys feel about your exhaust systems overall and what do they cost?

Ralliart: I think that Dan will agree with me that we both got our exhaust because OLYONLINE.COM was having a Bosal blowout, and the same exhaust that Bav Auto or BMP sells for $600, we got for $232.50 plus shipping. I have modified my airbox to allow more airflow, but I think that exhaust helped out in power too. I definately hear the difference, a real low bass sounding exhaust system. Also, Dan and I had the same problem that the tip coming out of the muffler was too far to the right. I rigged mine to stay in the center. Overall, for what you get out of our little fourbangers, and for the cost of other systems, I am happy with my purchase.

Personally I think the Tri Flo is way too loud, even at idle.

My favorite sounding exhaust on a M44 is one by Racing Dynamics. I don't know who they use. Might even be SuperSprint, because I also like SuperSprint a lot.

The Bosal group buy was a great deal.
I think they are too loud too, but the price right.

Well they got the Supersprint for $450 at BMP. Is there anyone else out there lookin for exhaust? Maybe a group buy on these?

you are probably gonna all think I am retard, but my friend picked up just some universal rally muffler, and through it on a 1997 ti, and that car sounds like something fierce, to say the least. When at idle you hear this un-intursive growl. It is very prominent, but still not intrusive, it reminds me of that sound of the stock m3's. When normaly driving, and not really on the throttle hard, it is a little loud, but in a good way, it really has an ehaust note that is just right. Now, when you really open up the throttle, talk about soemthign feirce, that engine screems, probably more than any BMW i have ever heard, wouldn't belive it if I didn't hear it. I am telling you, a streight through universal rally muffler is the way to go.

BMWboy: No offense, but people but BMW's because it is a performance vehicle. We do not want to put an exhaust on just for sound or looks, we do it to help with the performance and power of the car. I went with the Bosal because I know guys that work for the company, and did real R&D to get the optimum cat back exhaust system. Maybe not as good as a TriFlow or SuperSprint, but also way less expensive. Just my opinion.

I know what you mean, but I am being perfectly honest when I say you do have a large noticible difference in throttle response in the car, atleast over my friends stock z3. I figure they are fare to compare because they are the same engine, and almost the same drive train, as far as I know. . .

I figure I'd chime in on this one...

My bosal is great. Flat out - for $232.** I got full stainless system with a warranty that is actually tested to maximize flow - not just some straight-through, no baffle import "tuner" system. Being 4 cyls. we actually need some back pressure to gain performance through a range of RPMs - this one delivers. Brospeed is also very very light - the weight savings alone makes it worth the $$. Not to knock supersprint (et al), b/c they make great systems, they are far overpriced (as are most things tailored for the BMW market) and for our cars, aren't even all stainless.
Idle noise is great on the brospeed - a super nice low rumble much like SS, and at higher RPMs, it sounds smooth but not loud like a tri-flo. But that is beside the point. If you're looking for actual performance and don't pull down a seriously nice salary, get a Bosal Brospeed and put the saved money towards suspension. If you are looking for a nice tip and note, and have money to burn, by all means, order a SS or AC Schitzer - we'll be pulling down the same numbers (remember, we have small 4s), I'll just a few hundred more dollars to put towards other things.

My $.02

Cheers,
Dan

So where is the best place to buy a Brospeed? I'm sold.

Dan Burger

Check out olyonline.com
they were having a blowout on them, but I was told that I bought one of the last ones.
Ask for Ralph - he'll take care of you.

They norm. retail for $600, but they had them for $232.00

Good luck!
Dan

Dan: You and I should get a kick back for sending so many people to OlyOnline.com. I think advertising like this should get me some new wheels and tires and a suspension upgrade.

Dan Burger

DougZ- No doubt! We should make an anonymous call to Ralph and direct him to the board so he can see the business we're driving to him. Hell, I'd just like a discount on some fluids! But seriously, the Brospeed is a fine system and the best for the money (at $232). DougZ and I ARE NOT BENEFITING FROM THIS!!! We just hate seeing folks pour their hard-earned money into things that have a fancy name, but don't deliver (at least as much as they should for $500+) The Brospeed is cost-effective, looks greats, sounds great, and actually performs. Get one while you can.

Cheers,

Dan

Alright, I have given in to the gods of aftermarket performance. It's all downhill from here.

Yes, thats right I ordered up a Brospeed this morning. Any suggestions for installation other than what you have already posted?

DougZ

Nope, pretty staright forward. Most likely, it will want to touch the right side of the rear valance. You just have to rig it up to stay to the center. I used zip ties betwwen the frame and the hanger. Don't use the zip tie on the metal hanger, as it will get hot and melt the zip tie.

Oh, and just tell Ralph from Olyonline to put the check in the mail.

Yup, I am pretty sure I have made up my mind, I to will be the new owner of a Brospeed exhaust after I recieve the next pay check. It's funny, I keep promising my girlfriend that I won't spend my pay check on my car, and that we will go out. Yeah, it will happen eventually. . . Oh well, I would also like to let everyone know that I have made up my mind, and I will soon have a turbo powered 318ti. I have the luck of working at a Speed shop for american cars, but my boss said he would be more than happy to help me fabricate the parts, and Bavarian autosport said they can re do my computer chip. So, I will let you know whats going on if anyone is interested. Expect construction of the parts to start about January 2002, ok, not that soon, but soon enough.

Well its a done deal. I put the Brospeed on yesterday. Everything was a lot easier to install than I thought it would be. I am pretty happy overall. sounds good, looks good, and cheep.

How is it performing? Is there a big difference in performance?

Ralliart
08-05-2001, 04:48 PM
Well its really hard to tell judging by the good ol seat of the pants performance test. It might ad a little on the high end. It does weigh a lot less than stock, I am thinkin at least a good 20 lbs. I should going to a dyno within the next few weeks. I will let you guys know.

One more question. Does anyone have any pictures of the brospeed on a 318ti? I am just curious what it looks like.

Tried to find the exhaust and they do not carry it for the 1999 318ti. Does anyone know where to get it now?

Thanks

well what i dont get is the fact that even these after market exhaust have the pinched pipe that rides under the subframe. my dinan goes from like 3 inch to 2 inch at that pinch then back but how is that performance.

PurpleTurtle

bmwhartgeM3, that is my only concern with my current exhaust! That pinch has to have an effect! What good is a louder high-flow cat-back if it still has the pinch? Do any of the after market systems not have the pinch?

I just removed a beautiful but droning Skunk2 from my other car. I want to save weight and improve flow; but no drone and not much louder!
