No one but you should check out the
1.9 "Fogged" Airbox Modification at
http://www.mz3.net/articles/149.html

It's for a 1.9L Z3 but several ti owners did the same.

Cool, will it give me that nice throaty growl?

Can't say I have ever heard one in action.
I would think it would be a bit throaty.
I definately like this idea over a K&N.
I've seen people with K&Ns and no heat shield so while you get the throaty sound, you are sucking up warm air.

I have a 96 318ti and was planning on going to a local BWW dealer and do the dinan performance upgrade since I have not found a chip or software download that can be done on my year except for dinan. I was planning on just going ahead and also doing the dinan cold air intake system. A couple of questions:
1. Is dinan the only way I can do a performance chip for a 96 318ti?
2. Is dinan cold air intake a good way to go?
3. Is it true that dinan cold air intake uses the K and N filter?

Apprecite your thoughts!

You could also try Bavarian Autosport, Turner Motorsport, or BMP Design for chips.

as far as I know Dinan is the only one that offers a chip for the Ti, you can also look for a chip for a Z3 w/1.9L it is also an M44. as far as the intake is concerned I would go a different route than dinan. They make good stuff but it is way overpriced. Personaly I made my own using 4" inercooler piping and a K&N CAI kit off of ebay, came with a little elbow and the filter and a couple of clams and silicone joints. My Filter now sits behind the dirvers side foglight - get lots of cold air, and no need for a heat shield. I also took out the airdam in the frot. in the middle there is a large piece of plastic/rubber for the airdam, take it out. It is restricting airflow to the bottom half of your radiator.

Dinan isn't the only company that makes chips for the ti, those other places that I have mentioned have chips for the ti. Also, Bavarian Autosport has cold air intakes for the ti for about $260, which is much cheaper than Dinan.

I think Dinan is the only one that make chips for the OBDII Ti's - if you have an ODBI ti then everywhere has them. But for OBDII you have to have your ECU reprogramed (there is no chip). My CAI setup total was $30 - I would never spend that kind of money on an intake.

I think they are all the same, because when I called about the chip for my ti, all my answers were that I would have to send away my ecu to get it reprogrammed.

This Italian company has a Carbon Dynamic Airbox cold air intake system.
I don't own one, but I'm thinking about it. The website is www.bmcairfilters.com and it runs about $245 for a 318.
