View Full Version : Oil Loss

I recently bought a 98 Ti with 58,000 miles. When I first checked the oil level it was right inbetween the marks and very clean. The prior owner said it is due for a change in about 1,000 miles, the dash light indicates one more green tick left. (The prior owner babied the car and had the dealership service everything). After 600 miles I noticed the oil level was a bit lower, about 3/4 of a quart. I don't notice any obvious leaks and the oil was still very clean. Presently the oil type is Castrol Natural oil 10W-40.

Is this oil loss typical? Would synthetic oil be better? Any suggestions?

I really wouldn't worry about it.
They do consume some oil and YMMV.

BTW- I do synthetic every 4.5K miles.
I used to do dino oil every 3K and 4.5K is properly overkill, must it's a old habit that I can't change. Actually the best thing would probably use synthetic and change the oil filter every 4.5K.

I found Mobil 1 on sale and bought a bunch, but the weight is 10W-30. Will this weight be alright to use in my 318ti? I live in Maryland - never too hot, never too cold.

Hey Phillip-
nice to have another ti enthusiast in Maryland!
10w-30 dinojuice or synth. should be fine around here. That is what I've been using - no drama so far!

Does anyone know the proper torque rating for the oil drain plug and oil filter cap on a '98 Ti?

my ti also burns a little oil when i drive for long periods at highway speeds. the dealer recommends 5w30.i started using synthetic oil right after i bought the car so i really don't know whether that helps with the oil consumption problem or not. by the way i also live in maryland. (go ravens)

I've been also using Mobil 1, but at 5W30.

Where in Maryland are you finding ist on sale?
Last time I bought Mobil 1 was at K-Mart.

Torque oil plug to 25Nm or 18 ft lbs.
I believe you should also use a new crush washer. They come with the oil filter.

I've been using my arm to torque down the bolt. I tighten until hand snug, then a LITTLE more. I'm told because of the crush washer you really don't have to crank it down.

I also check the engine near the oil filter and underneath the car the next day for leaks anyway.
