Inspection light and Auto trans Question

Hi all ,
I am the happy new owner of a 1997 318 ti.
Since I am a home mechanic I was wondering if someone could please tell me how to turn off(reset) the inspection light at home.
Secondly, I was told the automatic transmission is maintainance free and does not require maintainance, and that if I change the fluid(does it need special fluid?) it will ruin the tranny. Thanks in advance for your help!!

You can either buy a reset tool from Peake Research (http://www.peakeresearch.com) or make your own. Take a look at a homemade tool from Ron Stygar (http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/electrical/e36_reset_service_lights.html).
