I am considering purchase of a '98 ti w/sport pkg and wonder if anyone can offer an opinion on the market value of these wonderful cars. A local dealer in Portland, OR wants $17K for a '98 ti with the sport "M" package w/57Kmiles on it, red with black interior. Has a cassette only. Condition is great but is the pricing a little hi? Also it came from FL and another dealer mentioned that the saltwater could be a potential problem with bubbling of paint in future from salt penetrating underneath?? I can't find the original MSRP online. He tells us it was a ltd production but wasn't that just the case in '96? I believe I read. This was however, the last year it was produced so in that sense they are no more. Thing is credit union will only lend low book on it: $13.6 so it means a deep expense on the cash outlay! I know that hi book is $17.7 but in today's economy it's unusual to get hi book. Do you know what resale value is like in your area and what the expectancy on the engine is like before head work (or other major expense) needs to be done? BTW did it come with any "M" badges on the front or rear originally? This only has it on the door panels.

What age range typically targets this car (we are our 30's) for resale purposes if we buy it?

Sorry for the endless questions but can't decide on this or a VWPassat priced at low Blue Book. Thx for any opinions you have to offer. Paul

the asking price on that car is in the ballpark but your area also has a lot to do with it.I know of a 99 with about 2/3 of those miles in my area asking $18K so it's all relative. Also don't worry about that FL. salt water issue, if the car wasn't submerged in the water then don't worry http://www.happytogether.com/318ti/forum/wink.gif I live in NY and the salt they put on the streets in the winter is far more harsh and I have no rust! My car is a 95 http://www.happytogether.com/318ti/forum/smile.gif So I guess what it really come down to is if you are willing to pay for it and for that money it should have a CD changer! (no big deal but...) negotiate more!
