Anyone know how much fluid it will take to fill the automatic in my '96 318ti if it's bone dry? I've already put 7 quarts in it but it's still thirsty.

Run out to the book store or library and check the Haynes manual. This is about all that manual is good for...

Hanes manual just says 3.2 quarts of Dexron III type ATF (pp. 1-1 and 1-2)

Bentley manual has more info. Bentley manual says the following:

Automatic Transmission Fluid Capacity (refill only)
- A4S 270R/A4S310R
Removal of large sump only: 3.0 liters (3.2 qt)
Removal of both sumps: 5.0 liters (5.3 qt)

- A5S 310Z: 3.3 liters (3.5 qt)

So, it sounds like you've already added about twice as much as necessary. The Bentley manual says the fluid should be checked when it's between 30-55 degrees Celsius, 86-131 degrees Farenheit.

See Bentley pp. 240-1 thru 240-3 for the full procedure.
