What's the difference between a club sport and a sport? I have an original 1998 TI broucher and it doesn't list the club sport as an option.
Option for my year are:
Base
Active
Sport

My car is sort of wierd. It's a '98 and I'm the second owner. I assume it's a base, because I don't have cruise, OBC, or foglights. But I do have other things that are not base. I assume these were options that were added:
California Roof
15" alloy wheels
Synthetic leather seats
Premium sound system
Artic Silver metalic paint
I also have ASC, but I thought that was standard.

Since you don't have the standard active options, OBC, cruise, you can rule out active. The 15" wheels would mean you have a base. If you had M-technic trim, it would be a Sport.
I had a California Roof in my 98.
It really liked that option.

Yeah, the roof is what sold me on this car. I was thinking that my 15" wheels were not stock because they are 10 spokes and I thought stock wheels were five spokes?
What does the M-technic trim look like?
I was able to dig up a Vehicle History Report that I got from the dealer. Here's some info from it.
Model Code: 9830 CG73
Color Code: 0309 Artic Silver Metal
Trim Code: K5SW Black Leatherette
Production Date: 1997/10
Vehicle Option Information
0098 Alp Radio C33
0782 100% 9830
0755 California Roof
0942 Special Charge
I'd really like to know what 9830 is. It's shows up in the model code and as an option. No luck with Google or searching 318ti digest archives.

I've got the Cali top as well ... I was wondering how many TI's there are with the California top, I wonder how rare it really is ...
Has anyone had their cali top replaced ? I'm wondering how much that'll cost me if I ever have to get it done ...

:( Can someone help me I am new to the site and I don't know if I have a "Sport", "Active" or "Base". I have a '96 Boston Green ti, w/cruise, moon roof, no fogs, 1.9L, 4sp. automatic or tiptronic manual, OBC, witham/fm cassette prewired with factory plug for direct connect CD changer and I have upgraded from the ten spoke 205-60-15's to the seven spoke 205-55-16's off of the 2000 323i. I have seen a couple of similar ones here without the skirts and front spoiler painted, when I purchased mine they were already painted. Are there any other engine specs I should know about? This is really a cool site!

My guess is you have an Active.
If you had M-technic trim I would say you had a Sport. Being that you have cruise and OBC I would say you have an Active. Cruise and OBC was standard with the Active although available as options on the Base and Sport.

I just purchased a Club Sport model from a dealer in Ft. Colllins Co. It is a nice car, I love the color hellrot (bright red), and the red/black interior inserts. I will try to post some pictures of it later today.
This is my first bimmer and I love it! When I was looking at the car at the dealership a BMW driver honked and waved as he went by. That suprised me, with my Acura Legend no one else even knew what it was. I never had a driver of another Legend wave or anything, even if I waved at them.
I have a 1996 Active with a California top.

hey tastade, did you get that ti on the dealership right after the railroad tracks on college ave.? if so i looked at it a few times and really liked it. i just moved to the kansas city area and i'm currently looking at a 96 with the california top, its silver metallic with a five speed. how much did you end up giving for your ti if you don't mind me asking. they are asking 9500 for the silver one and i'm not sure if thats a good deal or not.

Yeah, that is the one I bought. That dealer that always has the used BMW's and Audi's. I ended up trading for it, but their cash price would have been about 7,500. I traded my Acura legend and paid a difference of about $4500. They were asking $8500. It needed new tires and a window, otherwise it was pretty good mechanically. I have put about 10k miles on it without a problem. It is in storage for the winter now, I just moved to Iowa and don't want it to rust.

Budget M3

'98 Sport w/ California roof and Kompressor (Downing Atlanta Supercharger). The DASC easily fixes the only criticism I've ever heard about the ti--i.e. not enough power. I now have ~210hp (at the crank) in a 2800lb chassis which allows this "Budget M3" to keep up with (stock) E36 M3's on track straightaways as well as in the turns! ...and I still get 28-30 mpg around town!
BTW, I replaced the stock M-sport suspension, too. If you have an Active or Base and would like to upgrade the handling, please email me. Asking only $250 plus shipping for 4 lowering springs (~.75") and 4 shocks with ~75K one owner miles.

I bought my beautiful piece of black magic after being told that I could no longer drive my '88 Mazda RX-7 'vert due to a sky-diving accident I had a few years ago. This is my first Automatic, but I don't find it to be that much of a difference for my needs. I have noticed the absent feeling of "interactiveness" of having not to shift gears, but hey, it's all good as far as I'm concerned.
I was a little remiss to hear so many people sometimes bad-mouthing the 318ti. I finally had to realize that this was nothing more than a control tactic and that I needed to just "get along and enjoy my bimmer!"

I have a 1996 California Edition. 5 spd. OBC, Black with grey leatherette, cruise, and 15" 5 spokes. And my car didn't come with fogs, but I did just add them.

the only option on my car at the time of purchase was ASC+T. i added fogs, (non-factory) cd changer and the OE 16" alloys.
there are other things i'd love to do to it, but all my hobbies are expensive. since the ti is my commuter, it only gets a little more than just what it needs.

pretty base for me too, '98 ti with leather heated seats, moonroof, spoiler and then there's the stuff I added on to it like the 17" zender rims, foglights, upper and lower eyelids, white lights (front, side, back)...and still working on it :)

'95 Sport, Jet Black, black interior, sunroof, manual, limited slip. Bought it new Feb '96, had a May '95 build date. Painted the rockers, M-Technic front/rear bumpers, M moulding, Supersprint (I love this pipe), powdercoated '95 double spokes with 235/40 17 Pilot Sports. It's either a supercharger for the ti or a used E36 M3 in the next few years. I would keep the ti no mater what other BMW's I would own. Who knows, maybe a track car in its future?

I feel like such a fool asking, but I have no idea which model my baby is... maybe one of you could help me out... I have ASC, Sun Roof, Cruise, Manual Tranny, Heated Seats, Fabric Interior, Power Mirrors, and I think the original head unit was an Alpine Casette/Stereo, that has since been changed out for a newer and much better Alpine... I don't know what else to list... It struck me as odd, initially, that the seats were non-leather but it had a fancy option like heated seats. I don't know, whatever it is I love it. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what model mine actually is, thanks.

Upon looking at the TI Companion I came to the conclusion that mine must be an active package... I left out the following features in my last post:
15" alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and shift knob, on-board computer, remote keyless entry system and alarm, one-touch windows
But the active still doesn't explain the heated seats... it's so confusing

I am in the Uk and the specs maybe different to the US.Dont think mine is a sport I think it is a 318Ti with sport package. Its a 97 or 98 not sure :ashamed:.Colour is Montreal Blue
Mtec sports seats
Mtec suspension
Sports steering wheel

Body coloured bumpers & skirts
Foglights
Centre armrest
Rear headrests
Wheels are alloys and original BMW fitment for year, hard to describe not 5 spoke but rather like minilites.
Checked all this with BMW who advised all of these as optional extra`s.

Bzzzzz. Not in Sienna Red. Club Sports are only Jet Black or Bright Red.
Oh wait, I stand corrected, I thought we were talking US. I don't believe the UK had a Club Sport. They did have some other models that the US did not have.

I think the rear headrests mean it's more likely to be a 98 with the rear headrests... Also, I fail to see the distinction you are trying to make between Sport/Sport Package, it's the same thing.

Ooh yeah I forgot it has the alarm and keyless entry. I have had it for 3 years, and it only had one owner before me, and I guess he was an older man. I only know that because it still gets serviced at the original BMW dealership where it was bought new. But it's such a great car!

Yup, I found a base Ti without the extra bits. Lighter you know. It is being transformd into the Ti I always wanted. This time I'm sticking with mainly BMW factory bits from other cars and packages. My last project became more race car and less street with all of the aftermarket junk. It was still a fun ride. Best to all.

My registration document has my car as a "318ti Sport Edition", so I definitely know its a sport
Wasn't there a "Sport" and a "Sport Edition" in the UK? I think the only major difference was the M44 engine and front fogs? Shouldn't we list the "Dakar Version" as I've seen a few of these in the UK and they are easily distinguished by the bright Yellow paint job

grab the VIN and go here: www.realoem.com/bmw and you can at least find out when it was manufactured. is there no car registration paperwork or anything? manual with the car? the rear bumper is the m-tech, but that doesn't mean it's a sport. those wheels don't look like what would have been on a sport. what options does it have (that they didn't strip)?

so you have a 96 ... just need to figure out what model it is :) one can usually tell this from the options.
M-tech is the name for the stock "M" pieces. they were offered as part of the sport package, but you can also add them afterwards.
do you have other pics of the side? be nice to see if you have the m-tech side mouldings and skirts. obviously, we won't be seeing the front bumper ;)

I went to the auction the other day to check out another 318ti (badly smashed up) that looks exactly the same as mine from the outside which also had no compliance plate. The interior is different to mine. Mines got half leather seats with an extra thing near where your knees are which can be extended whereas the other one had normal material seats without that seat extention thing, mines got black colour interior the other ones grey, but it has this button near the steering wheel titled ASC (Anti-Slip Control?) whereas mine doesn't.
Under the hood, mines got wires that go to the fog lights, I don't know if that gives a hint as to what it is.
do you have other pics of the side? be nice to see if you have the m-tech side mouldings and skirts. obviously, we won't be seeing the front bumper

so you have a 96 ... just need to figure out what model it is :) one can usually tell this from the options.
M-tech is the name for the stock "M" pieces. they were offered as part of the sport package, but you can also add them afterwards.
do you have other pics of the side? be nice to see if you have the m-tech side mouldings and skirts. obviously, we won't be seeing the front bumper ;)
By the M-Tech mouldings, do you mean the part circled below?
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/7548/moldings7rx.jpg
Mine have been stripped off, both sides.
As for the side skirts, they look exactly like those in the picture above.
What else comes in a Sports package?

it's the whole moulding that that little "m" badge circle above fits into (from just behind the front wheel well to just in front of the rear wheel well. the m-tech moulders are wider (or taller if we you want to look at it that way) than the regular ones.

Are you in the US? If so I have never heard of a package like that. It has to be aftermarket. Also any 318ti I have ever seen came with 16" wheels at the largest.

sorry, back to seats: if you have the front extending part in your seats, does that mean that they are the sports seats?

i just bought my first bmw a week or so ago.
Its a white 95 not sure of the package, sport maybe with 15 alloy wheels and what apears to be no other options, cloth seats, 5 speed, no cruse, no sunroof,
no foglights, no power or heated seats, no trac control.
i'm guessing a base with up graded wheels or a stripped down sport feel free to fill me in

Mine is not on your list!
It's a 1999 Ti Sport Edition, weird choice of name but as far as I know it is the UK version of the club sport.
It had 16" alloys (now has 18"), special edition boa amaretta sports seats, anthracite headling, aircon, ASC+T, total closure alarm Immob, M-tec leather steering wheel gear knob and handbrake lever, M-tec front bumper with integral fog lights, M-tec rear bumper with integral splitter, M-tec side sills, M-tec badged flat side body moldings, white lenses front and rear, premimum audio pack, tinted glass inc. graduated tinted front screen (optioned extra).

ASC started sometime in 96. If you have a button on the lower dash, you have ASC.

I '97 sport(I think) German spec.
I'm pretty sure it's a sport(although i'm not 100%) because of the M'trim(it even has a a M logo on the steering wheel) and 16" 5 spoke rims and one of the stiffist suspensions that I've ever felt.
I just bought it about 3 weeks ago here in Germany where I'm now staitioned for $4,000 in cash and I'm in love with it.
It's purple (of all colors) but it looks good I'll post pics soon.

In Europe you can individually select all the options but they did have a M-tech package much like our "Sport" package over here. The springs and/or shocks have probably been upgraded since if they were original the shocks def. wouldn't be that stiff by now lol...not to mention the stock dampening isn't all that stiff anyway.

It has ABS, TC and ASC, 10 CD Stacker as standard. I'm thinking it's just a Base Model with some extra stuff thrown in~! Not sure if this model was ever released in America~?

I'm an "old" guy in Southern California with an Alpine white '96 ti. The car is pretty much bone-stock, except for a K&N air filter.
The equipment listed on the window sticker (I have all of the original dealer paperwork and owner's manual) is: AM/FM /cassette with Alpine 6-CD changer, power windows/locks/mirrors, OBC, anti-lock brakes, sunroof, cruise control, 5-speed, A/C, cloth seats, and alarm system.
I'm guessing it's an "Active" model, based on the other comments I've seen here about what each model comes equipped with.
I am the 3rd owner, and bought it with 58,000 miles on it 5 years ago.
It now has only 125,000 miles on it and and I have NEVER had to repair ANYTHING mechanical under the hood, except normal maintenance items, such as fluids, spark plugs, brakes, belts, and tires.
Oh, I did have to replace the battery two years ago, and I just put new tires and brakes on it. Window switches seem to be common failure items.
That said, I noticed that the interior trim started sagging (headliner, pillar covers, etc.) so I replaced those with OEM items.
I plan to drive this car until they won't let me drive any more.

Oh well. Oh yea, bout the hood scoop, I'm bout to poke a hole and use it as a way of cooling down the engine and removing the fan. Reduce weight and still keep the engine cool. If the scoop doesn't work, I'm gonna upgrade it and get a bigger scoop.
