Opinions on the M44 engine

For those of you not into engine numbers, it's the 1.9L, 16 valve 4 cylinder that came out in 1996.

Could this be a BMW legend of an engine?

My old 1983 320 four banger lasted me to 225,000 mis and is likely still banging.

I would say the engine that came before it in the 'ti' is more of a legend..

the M42 has been a BMW four-cylinder workhorse for what, two decades? the M44 showed up for a while in the 'ti' and the Z3, and now it's basically gone. It's a great engine and all, but I'll take the M42 (and yes I have one -- but it's more that there's more parts! :D).
