Radio antenna

I am new to this forum, but I was surprised to see in the album, photos of the compact with a radio atenna fitted on the rear wing (fender? in the US), is it not the the case in the US that the antenna is part of the heated rear window elements as in the UK???

Well, personally I like the antenna on the back, something makes it look more sporty (just me I guess). However, it did kind of surprise me because my dad's american '93 318i has the integrated antenna. My car being newer and all, it was kind of confusing.
