View Full Version : 1-series start button wiring?

So I bought a new 1 series start button for a fun little mod, but I cannot find anywhere on the internets a wiring diagram for the 1-series button. It is a 10 pin plug-in. (the Z8 one is only a 4 pin)

Help anyone?

Get a multimeter and start playing.

That's my plan today, was just hoping for a little wiring cheat sheet...

well make one for the rest of us :)

Well no such luck... The 1-series button has no direct electrical contacts and uses micro-amp signals relayed by a magnetic bar position inside the button. It also functions as the engine shut-off as well as start, and the circuitry is integrated...

Long story short, I'm no electrical engineer, so I will have to locate another start button (from a Z8 or S2000) to finish this right. I rigged a simple on/off rocker switch to function as a momentary start button while I find the right button to replace it with.

Pics coming later today...

hope no one breaks into your car before then :lol: there are some universal ones on eBay, maybe you could get one of those

Hey James if you get this done you should do a write up on the procedure. I have been thinking about doing it, but don't know if I would be able to pull it off myself...
Maybe I'll start hunting for a Z8 or S2000 button now :smile:

The procedure is not difficult, John and I will take pictures. There are a couple of write-ups out there, but I will do another one here.

And Brendan, the car is safe. The way I wired it still requires the key in the ignition and has a safety feature as well... While I was doing the procedure, I figured out how to bypass the ignition cylinder altogether, but I will not post that in a public forum...

Okay thanks James :biggrin: it would definitely have to require the key in the ignition for me to want to even do it. Way to sketchy if anyone could jump in and push a button to start it.

I was thinking you had probably did that, wasn't sure

if you do a write-up I might just do this myself, I know a guy with an E36 M3 with a push button start and it's so cool :biggrin:

Frederick, that would be a great idea, but I chose another route. There is no way to utilize the circuitry in the start button as it is far more complex than the e36 was designed for.

So, I disassembled the switch:

removed the circuit board, and utlilzed the button components and fabricated contacts inside...

Since the way I'm using it is simply as a momentary contact switch, it only required one contact inside.

Then I fussed and cussed and tweaked and glued and drilled and screwed;

and this is the end result:

And installed;

looks good, the locations not where I would have chosen, I would have rather had it on the dash somewhere but I'm assuming it's a pain to mount there, still pretty cool

Thanks Pauly...

I had originally planned on mounting it here:

That is where clex2 mounted his Z8 button, and it seemed logical, but I decided otherwise for me...

I always put the key in the ignition, push in the clutch, check the shift knob and make sure the car is in Neutral, then start the car. Where I mounted it is closer to the shifter and hand brake. Also the hand brake is the safety... The start button won't work unless the hand brake is up.

Whoa, looks very nice!

But yea I agree with pauly. I would put it somewhere visible.

Boys, boys, boys... It's about function as well as form.

This is where it works best for me...

I took plenty of pics, so I will post a full DIY in the next day or two...

I kinda wanna put a trigger on the gear shifter to start the car...

nice write up! i've never seen someone put the starter there but i really like it. It's not to in your face but is in a good spot to hit. good job!
