Started making thumping noises on the way home. All was well 2 months ago. The mount has sheared off of the body cavity. How have you all repaired it? Looks like a plate should be welded above/below on the body section?

I think this is what you need: site1 (http://www.racepad.com/tech/bmw/change_rear_shock_mounts/change_rear_shock_mounts.htm)....or try this:
site2 (http://www.m3supercar.com/e36rtm.html)

Thanks, I've done those before. What I need is a way to repair the strut mount hole, it now looks like a beer can ripped in half.

D@mn Gary, what are you doing to that car? I'd say try bimmerforums or DTM...has to have happen to someone. Good luck with the fix!

The dealer has a rear shock mount stiffener plate used on the Z3 cars that will give you a perfect template for making your replacement mount (and it's cheap too!).

If you increase the thickness of the material, be sure to properly reinforce the sorrounding area, or you will make a BIGGER hole next time...

BavAuto has stiffener plates as well but don't go for their poly bushing RSMs or you will be VERY dissapointed. They don't last as well as stock...but BavAuto is now pushing a mount from Meyle and although I havn't used them, they HAVE to be better than those crappy poly mounts. To BavAuto's credit, they are making good on the failed poly mounts and are giving me Meyles as replacements. This seems to be a common problem with E36 and I just had the same problem with our M-Coupe.
