I have a '98 with the sport package. I'm the second owner of the car and it has 54k miles. Recently, there has been a message indicator light on my dash, telling me I need and oil change. I just had the oil changed (not at the dealership) and the light is still on. I'm assuming that this is one of those built-in features to lure you back to the dealership for pricey servicing.
I've seen the ads on that well-known auction site that shall remain nameless. Is there a tool that one can purchase to disable this light, or am I doomed to do all of my maintenence from my wallet, instead of under the hood?

There is an electronic tool you need to reset the dash maintenence lights. Its about $100-150 from Bavauto.

The information from eB...err the auction site is probably taken from the "BMW Enthusiast's Companion" or some similar publication, or even from a website like this. In otherwords they're probably selling copyrighted information without permission which is illegal, I wouldn't buy it.

Speaking of which, the "BMW Enthusiast's Companion" is a nice reference to have around. It has lots of information about BMW's in general, maintenance, tires, wheels, driving technique, and much more. It can be found at most book stores in the transportation section or on Amazon. It is basically compiled information from BMW CCA members. I sound like I am plugging the book, but I am in no way affiliated with it (besides the fact I own a Bimmer :) ).

There is no need for the tool - I reset mine with a 12" piece of wire, I will post a link to my website with instructions.

I will put it under "Oil light reset" on the left. The site is still under construction - and the directions will be up tomarow
