Keyless entry/car alarm remote

Can anyone help me? Just got a new keyless entry/ car alarm remote off EBAY. Same model and all as the manufacture remote. Was wondering if I need to program it, and how is this done?? Or can anyone recommend a website where I can do some research on it?? Hope someone out there can help! Thanks in advance! =)
(Also, I don't know if this is any importance, but I have a '97 TI)

I would goto your local BMW dealership and talk to one of the techs and see if they can give you some quick pointers, worth a shot and won't cost you anything. - They may even do it for you for a small fee.
