Why is it when cold air is beneficial for better engine performance, the air is taken from behind the right hand headlight, passes over a HOT radiator into the airbox.(1998 318ti )

Isn't what passes over the radiator blowing on the alternator?

The air is taken in from the passenger side headlight area and is routed across the top of the fan shroud behind the radiator via a foam insulated tube. The heat from the radiator does not have time to affect the air in the tube since it flows through at such a high velocity where it collects in the airbox. Cold air packs molecules more dencely thus resulting in a higher, more violent combustion.

Why not take the shorter route from the left hand side headlight?

maybe to choke the engine down a little so it wouldn't get too close the the power of the 323, I know that the 1.8L and 1.9L have the same horsepower despite the .1L difference, I'm sure the intake plays a part in that
