Hey,

I am just wondering how Ti's far against early 90's VW's or a 80's 325.

I know I had a 80's VW pull up next to me and looked my car over and then looked at me and reved his engine. I didn't rev back but when the light turned green I left him far behind. 80's VW's are slow!

thanks,

it all depends on what you are racing.

a 325e would take a ti off the line, but the ti would catch up in 2nd or 3rd gear.

a 325i would definetly beat a ti. even the e30 318i would beat the ti due to less weight.

im not sure which vw's you are talking about.

It has a lot to do with the driver as well, When i first started messing arround with my Ti, I raced a late 90's 328is and we were neck and neck. It is also going to depend on what kind of Tranny - if they have an auto you loose power (the 328is was an auto)

Hey,

The VW I raced ws a 2 door wagon. I don't know what model that is but it was slow and loud like he had racing headers, exhaust, intake, or maybe a combination of some of those or something. Or that just may have been the way it sounded.

So Ti's dont stand up against e30 318i? The 0-60 for a 1984 318i is like 11.4. My old car a 1975 BMW 2002 had a faster 0-60. I would think that we would catch them in 2nd or 3rd like the 325's.

One of the kids I work withs friend had a 1984 318i that I was going to race but he blew the engine LOL. Now he has a e30 325 with exhaust, intake, short shifter and maybe more. I am just trying to figure out if I would beat him or lose horribly.

there are two different e30 318i's. The 84 uses the m10 engine and is definetly slower than ours. The 90-91 uses the m42 engine and is quicker due to less weight.

Hey,

I just saw the kid I work withs friends e30 325. It is a 1990 325is I believe. The kid wants to race me what are the odds of beating him :?: He thinks that his car came with 190hp stock, but I got a BMW buyer guide book for christmas that has all the stats and says he has 168hp stock. He says he has 220hp with his mods.
The 325 has short shifter, fogged airbox, exhaust, lowering springs, Chip and I think he told me that they replace some of the Interior engine parts but cant remember what they replaced. He is doing cams soon :!:
I only have the Dinan Chip and Cold Air Intake proformance wise so far.

In that book I have it says our 0-60 is better and we are lighter by only like 50 or 60 pounds (not much but some). He only has a SOHC.

How do you think I will hold up against him :?: I am just wondering what to expect. Any tips on where to shift or anything(maybe knock some weight off for the race) :?:

thanks

THe kid with the e30 325is has no where near 220hp, its near impossible to get that kind of power out of an m20. Either way if he knows how to drive he should beat you. Our 318ti's jsut arent very fast in straight lines.

I agree with graphik, there is no way that 325is could have 220hp, he is probibly just estemating that, and he is way over estemating. I also think that just depending, there is a possiblity that you could stay with him pretty good. like I said in my post before I raced a late 90's 328is and we were neck and neck. On my Ti, powerband starts arround 3800rpm and falls off between 5500 and 6000rpm, if you shift at 5900-6000, the gearing is set up to where you remain in powerband (ie first gear at 6000rpm then shift to second you will be at 4000rpm) - Give it a shot and tell us how it goes. :)

Hey,

You dont think I should rev up any higher then 6000rpm? My chip gave me 200rpm more to the rev limiter.
If I only go up to 6000rpm wont I only get up to about 115mph to 120mph range right?

thanks

My car reads 122mph at 5600 rpm. 4th redlines at about 114.

personaly I wouldn't go much above that, you can but you don't know that your engine is balanced past what the factory revlimit is. So you could (slim chance) Blow your engine. If you are going to be taking reving the engine that high (6000 or above) I would defenatly use 91 Octane gas. In 5th gear I have gotten my car up to 130Mph@5800rpm, then the speed limiter kicks in.

bmw e30 325i's are a pretty quick car. 168 hp stock but only weighs about 2700 thats less than a e36 ti. i know i have had 3 of them and two of my friends have them one with a m50 motor and one w/ 325 hp turbo, water inj, forged pistons and alot more.

And watch out for vw's. def the older ones. there know for putting vw 1.8 t motors with 240 hp in 2000 lbs rabbit gti's (mk1) and (mk2). and vw's have one of the biggest forced induction following around. at least in euro cars.

wow you can pull 114 in 4th? my 95 will do 105mph at the absolute limit in 4th. could we have different ratios or could the speedo's be off from each other? also my speed limiter kicks in at just before 120mph.

w0rd. I have an 89 325is and it's definitely quicker than my girlfriend's 96 ti. Not a TON faster but in our highly unofficial road tests I can pretty much pull ahead in any gear (both are autos). As for older stock VWs the Jetta ain't got nothing on BMW period, but watch out for the Corrado if it's in good shape.

And yeah, it's next to impossible to get 200hp+ out of an M20 without forced induction, and even then why not just go with M50/S50.
