So I know the guys up the Northeast are not getting out the track anytime soon, so here are some track pics to get you through the snowy season.

These were taken at Daytona International Speedway at the end of October. Running the 24 hour configuration with PBOC.

The first three are a three wheeling motion shot. All pictures taken by Henry Kowalski of ColourTech South. The best motorsport photographer in the Southeast.

I'll get some more up later tonight, busy with holiday stuff today.

When is the next track day?

January 2nd and 3rd at Sebring with CHIN Motorsports. Great group to run with, I'll get about 2.5 hours each day. Then January 14-17th with PBOC is winterfest.

January is one of my busiest months usually because the weather is great for the track. 60degrees with usually crystal clear blue skies.

Look at me, in front of the GT3 RS... To bad he is probably lapping me for the second or third time, and in another 100yards or so, he was going past me. I was probably doing 125mph right there. Based on other cars I was in that weekend, that Porsche was probably in excess of 160. Notice I'm lower on the banking, slow cars stay low.

I'd love to submit this type of photos for a calendar spot, but I don't have the rights to the pictures. I have to much respect for the photographer that took it, to not get his permission first, and just never looked into it.

Steve- If he would allow me to use one of these pics if it has one of his logos and a photo credit on it, would you allow that?

Maybe we should do an all track picture calendar next year.

what have you done with your suspension? My front wheels dont lift like that

what I've done-->Bilstein B14PSS, H&R anti roll kit, Z3 M Roadster XBrace, front tower strut, E36 M3 wishbone bushings, E46 M3 convertible rear strut guide supports, Z3 strut guide support reinforcements.....has to be street legal so there arent much options left

TcKline DA coilovers, springs are around 600#. TcKline camber plates, spherical rear mounts, all race bushings, etc... It isn't as stiff as a lot of full on race cars, but it handles extremely well. The R888's generate so much grip at turn in, that I can lift the wheel more if I really manhandle the car at turn in. I had to slow down my turn in and get much smoother to drive the car well with these tires.

OP what suspension setup are you running? I might have scanned and missed it sorry if you did post the details.

Not always about top speed remember, looks like you had a great time regardless that the 110K car passed you 3-4 times but don't you expect that when you spend that much money?

Speed had coverage, None of the major broadcasters are interested in covering racing in the US unless it is Indy or NASCAR related. Spot car coverage is pretty much dead if you don't have a good cable package. That being said, I can usually find all sorts of racing on TV between Speed, MavTV, VS, and a few others..

Not really. It is a low end cable channel geared towards men. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MavTV

They show MX5 along with ARCA dirt track racing. I know I've seen some other random race series on there as well. The coverage may not be as pretty as the high dollar rolex/ALMS coverage, but the racing in some of the lower end spec series if phenomenal to watch.

koni yellows & vogtland springs, would like a stiffer setup but it suffices

engine is a stock m52

diff is a 4.10 kaaz 1.5-way, it's a bit short but it does ok, could use some more power to make use of 3rd gear

It was a great week-end, the Ti was super fast in the corners, even with chinese no name tires, very predictable but still ended up scaring me more then a few times. I only had a hard time passing the Evo's and STI with 500HP on the straight but, at braking and corners, the Ti was golden

currently im running GC track school coilover setup with revaveld koni's shock by SELEX (local suspension shop) 525rear 450front spring rate. Stock rear sway, M3 stock front sway.

By mid next month/ beginning juin, i'll probebly upgrade to 245 Direzza starspec or something in that grip range. I'll probebly bump up the spring rate and maybe change the sway bars for bigger but, thats a big maybe.

brakes are stock rear, 328 conversion front for vented rotors. SS brake line, HAWK HP+ brake pads all corners. Brakes are good for the curent weight of the car, with more tire grip theu will be better I think.

I'm in kind of the same boat Steven. Having a hard time making the progression from 9/10ths to 10/10ths... Right now, so much of it comes down to confidence for me. I can keep doing what I'm doing and know that I'm in complete and total control, and confident.. However, once I start to get to the point that I'm using a lot of slip angle, my confidence starts to drop off... I know I have the car control skills to correct slides and things of that nature, but trusting completely in the grip of the tires and yourself can get daunting.. Especially in difficult/high speed corners. The good thing is that once you really force yourself to start doing it, it becomes the new "normal" and your confidence resets to the higher bar. I found that I had to get into open passing groups to make good progress from driving the DE line and mentality. I found it to hard to really push myself and my car when I'm on track with others that are just out for a fun lap around the track. Even in instructor and advanced solo groups I find a lot of people are not constantly pushing themselves to perform better. Getting into timetrials and open passing groups really helped change my perspective where I need to be on it from the start. I'm sure it would have happened even faster if I went w2w..

I'm in kind of the same boat Steven. My last two instructors have told me I can't get anything more out of the car. I don't know if that means of me or the car. I know I can carry a little more going in and out of some of the turns. The track is getting pretty slippery in some places. I'm seeing others sliding in the same places I am. Seeing my entry and exit speeds are going to help me in the future.
I really don't care what my speed is at the end of the straight. Exit speed is what I care about. HP has little to do with exit speed.

Being a DE instructor myself for the last three years, I can safely say that some DE instructors really don't have a clue when it comes to advanced driving techniques and really getting it all out of the car. We help people drive their cars safely first, and then fast. That safe part means that there is almost always a buffer to help catch mistakes.

I've been amazed to see how experienced DE instructors have easily dropped a few seconds when they get professional instruction and really have somebody point out all of the "DE habits" that they have that are slowing them down. Turn in can typically be done at a faster speed, and much earlier than taught in DE's, which is the first thing I start correcting when I have an advanced student. There is almost always a difference between the racing line and the DE line. I know one of the local PCA groups I instruct with hates for instructors to teach the racing line, even if the student is ready to make that kind of progression.

I know I was in the mindset for a while that sliding is slow, and that you should be in control and not sliding. When in reality, that is not always the case, and you can typically carry more corner speed, with some mid corner sliding and be faster, on the throttle sooner, resulting in higher corner exit speeds as well as end of straight line speeds.

There are a couple places I feel the tail sliding around a bit and am comfortable with it. Other places I can get a slight 4 wheel drift going.

Some instructors don't have a problem with the race line. Others want you to stick to the party line. My line is a combination of race and DE line.

I was at infineon this weekend, pretty humbling experience. Lot of 400+ HP cars out there. The onyl cars I could really overtake were the miatas, ON THE STRAIGHTS...

Anyways, I'll be back, I need to make some changes to the car. I really had trouble finding the DE line, and I don't think my instructor had much confidence in me. Still had a hell of a time though. My friend is in the mini on my ass, his car was much easier to learn to drive fast, I was fighting my car the whole day. If anyone is local that would be willing to take me out that'd be awesome. My confidence level was low to start out, by the end of the day I was hitting 90 at the end of the straights, instead of like 45

My suspension isn't setup for wheel lifting, but I did slide around a bit, even with Z1 Starspecs...

I feel like I either really suck at driving fast in the corners, OR the ti is a horrible handling car, OR my car isn't setup very well, or a bit of all three, I dunno...

I found my Mini very easy to drive on the track.
Miatas are light and nimble.

How many schools have you had?
Don't be concerned how fast you are going on the straights.

Whose school was it?

Minis are easy to drive fast. Hpde for NASA. I run Komi yellows, 4 cyl hnr race rear springs, cut front m3 springs, front m3 sway and stock rear sway. Totally needs improvement, starting with spacers, then springs, then a rear LSD diff... Tires are z1 starspecs. Runs are 17*7.5 ltws non staggered.

I'd imagine cut M3 springs probably have something to do with your handling problems

kuleinc
07-05-2011, 06:42 AM
They were on the car when I got it, the shocks were all blown too, the rears are WAY to soft, under acceleration they bottom out... One thing at a time...

mohaughn
07-05-2011, 03:32 PM
I'd get your suspension up to snuff before worrying about an LSD. I'd also not worry about being slow the first time out, everybody is slow the first time out.

Since the Ti has no power, the trick to being faster in a Ti on track is to maintain corner speed. If your suspension is in bad shape or has poorly matched components, maintaining corner speeds will be difficult. Replace any worn out shocks/struts, get rid of any "modified" springs, and try to dial in some front negative camber. Spacers are not going to help handling.

slow_ti

An LSD would help. A lot. But def get new suspension. I'd get coils (I love my D2's) get some polyurethane bushings as well.

I think on a stock ti, the M3 sway is going to have less tension.

It's connected to the rest of the front m3 suspension on my Ti, which is right below the s52 in my Ti. Spacers do help handling, they effectively give u stiffer sways without all the body creaking

Didn't know you had changed out the suspension.
I drove my ti with stock springs and SA Konis for years.
Still have the stock sways.
Installed H&R Race Springs last year.

Sounds like you need seat time and instruction once you replace your springs.
Might also want to hook up with a BMW CCA club over NASA. For now anyway.

Are you referring to wheel spacers/hub extenders or some other kind of "spacer."

Wheel spacers give the car a little bit of added track widthand affect scrub radius, but don't affect the sway bar at all.

For learning, I'd suggest neither NASA or BMWCCA, unless either of the events is just a school with no race groups. There are other groups that don't have the race groups that tend to get more track time than the organizations that have race groups.

If the other cars are equivalent to Spec E30 here in the states, a Ti with the spec that the compact cup cars have should be somewhat similar. Depends on what their final competition weight is as the e30's tend to have a bit more power/torque, but the Ti can be much lighter.

What is your competition weight? I want to say NASA SPEC E30 is 2800 or 2850lbs minimum with driver and equipment. A Ti can easily be several hundred pounds lighter than that.

Roebling is a great track for the Ti. Just have to have the courage to come through that last turn completely flat to make up for the lack of power in the 4-banger. What group did you run there with? My local PCA region(citrus) runs there all of the time and I've also done a darkside driving event there a few years ago. Both are great groups to run with.

I've only run PCA events so far, usually with Coastal Empire Region. Now that I'm getting comfortable with speed I'm ready to go to a place with walls like Road Atlanta and Sebring. I plan on doing the Fall Darkside event at Roebling.

Not quite going flat out in turn 9 yet, Hitting 95mph at the apex! The DASC helps on the straight!

Look forward to meeting you at the track someday!

Great little cameras, add a remote power on button to the first gen and I think they are great.

Here's some video of my 332ti at Iowa Speedway--a NASCAR one-mile oval. We run two of the turns, then duck into the infield road course. We're doing about 120 mph on the banks before cutting down to the road course (NASCAR trucks lap at 125-130). Grab the pointer and take it up to about 14:30, and you'll see my black 318 pass a 600 hp supercharged Mustang (he let me by)--unless, of course, you WANT to watch a Mustang for 14+minutes.

I'm guessing you don't like my entry onto the banking. That's a little tricky because of the bump--too hot in, and the back end comes around. If you have a 600hp Mustang that leaps off corners, you can take it his way. What I'm trying to do here is keep my momentum up as best I can without putting too much power down and breaking the back end loose. Same on that turn off the banking onto the road course--that's 120 flat through the turn, then hard braking for a tight left. I make it a sweeper, while the Mustang cuts it tight then comes out like a rocket ship. Believe it or not, I actually set a lap record here in my class when I ran it with NASA, and was 5th fastest overall of 200 cars. On this particular day, the only cars that could catch me were that 600hp Mustang and a Boss 302 NASA track car.

It's the hands constantly moving around the wheel that I feel needs improvement.
I don't have much experience on banks. I drove NHIS once. Just once and that was years ago.

When I drive with the local BMW chapter at VIR, I'm pretty much in the middle. I pass a couple cars, a few pass me. It's a fast group. When I drive with the local Porsche region, I'm doing a lot of passing. And when I drive other tracks with other chapters, I feel downright scared at the level of skill other groups show.

I'm just saying I feel your steering input needs to be smoother.
When both hands are at 7:00, you really don't know where straight is if you where to run into a problem.

Some instructors believe you must keep your hands in one position all times.
I try to keep my hands in one position but find myself shuffle steering or rather pre-positioning on long sweepers. It's a habit I'm trying to get out of. Sometimes I have no choice because of my gut. But never both hands on one side of the wheel.

Please take it as constructive criticism. I mean no harm in my comments.
If you feel you are fast now, you will be faster if you can smooth out your steering inputs.

That Mustang driver is an instructor, runs the Track Guys driving school, and is one of the finest drivers out there. He has hundreds--if not thousands--of hours behind the wheel, run dozens and dozens of tracks all over the country, and taught hundreds of people how to drive--including me. Perhaps he knows a teeny bit more about driving than you do. If his hand movements don't fit your idea of a perfect driver, tough. Whatever he's doing works, because he goes like a bat out of hell. The only reason I passed him is because he wanted to get some video of me, and he let me by.

I have 700lbs springs in the rear and the stock rear swaybar and have never had a problem with front wheel lift. Just well planted and neutral! Well maybe dropping into hog pen at VIR or turn 3 Road Atlanta!

Missed this years fall race at NHIS Lemons Hooptiefest. One of my members got a bit over exuberant in his driving level. Got us a time out on Saturday and did this on Sunday, portion.

Needless to say I'm a bit upset as the car is torn up again and He has been the the contributing factor.

Also if anyone is interested, my car w/M44 gets 13.2mpg on track, lol.

The guys who've run old and new say the new track is faster, there is more pavement to track out onto. You'd probably be faster than a 2:28 now Steven.

Motor has midnight tune, fogg airbox, and exhaust. Refreshed 3.45lsd, tck sa coils 450f/700r. Big front sway bar, no rear bar. Max neg camber vorshlag plates up front, rear is still stock alignment. Vented rotors in front, stock rears with PFC z pads and ate typ 200 fluid. Wheels are 17x8.5 arc8, 245/40/17 Dunlop z2.

Front seats are sparco r100s, rear seats removed. I really need to get track pads, the PFC z have worked really well and not faded but a PFC 08 is what I want to try.

This winter I'm going to get a roll bar, fixed back seats, and harnesses. Need to improve safety. Going to get a Hans or necksgen too.

I might end up building it for TT eventually. I'd really love to find some 15x9 wheels and run smaller sticky tires, 225/45/15 would be fun and are way cheaper than 17s. A light 15 and tire would save almost 10lb per corner and give better gearing for the m44. With a 3.45 it would top out at 133mph in 5th, I think that's reasonable for the 4cyl. I never shifted out of 4th at vir.

2:30 is very good for an M44. If I gutted the car I'd get a few more seconds.
Don't remember what my diff is, H&R race springs and Koni SA.
I don't think I've ever went past 115 on the front straight. Too busy to notice the speed on the back.

A few things you could do different but from what I saw you had a lot of traffic.

Fixed seats will help keep you planted.

I downloaded iRacing and VIR. I'll need to stick with that for a little while.

Yeah the event was for both NASA southeast and mid Atlantic, all the classes were packed. I has lots of traffic that session but finally got a clear lap at the end.

I picked up some good tips on Sunday from my friend who runs an integra in TTE. He set the tte lap record at 2:14 early on Sunday. Basically he wanted me to carry more speed through turn 10 and brake for rollercoaster in one smooth zone. He also helped me carry more speed through hog pen.

Watching his video, I just need to get more used to the car squirming around and being "loose" to really push faster. He is at the limits of traction during his whole fast lap.

It helps plant the nose better. Instructors hate it when I do that.
I noticed that my track out at hogpen is smoother. Same exit speed whether I brake or not, but much smoother when I do brake.

A light brake at the top of the esses before the left hander and track all the way out.

Hope things change for me next year so I can get back out there.
Another place to carry speed longer is at end of the back straight. Instead of going towards the left you brake more towards the center.

Overall, looked good! Would love to get out on track with you.

It's been a long time since I last participated on this board. I used to be pretty prolific here, believe it or not. However, life gets more complex and takes many different paths, so one's time becomes much more scarce when kids (x3), work, wife, and trying your hand at entrepreneurship take center stage. I'm proud to say, that despite all that, I still have my beloved RE 330ti. It has a few little upgrades Ive done which I hope to post about soon. For now, I leave you with my last track day a few weeks ago with my buddy in his new 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS chasing me around Thunderhhill east. His car is easily faster but I may be a little more handy with the wheel. The ti is running a new TC Klien SA Koni setup with 400# springs all around, MZC sway bars, and 225/245 17 Bridgestone RE-11 (v.1). These tires are pretty awesome and the new v.2 RE-11A is even better. Warm up action up to the 3 min mark and then the chase begins at 10:45. I was trying my best to stay ahead of him.

Video from March VIR with NASA Mid Atlantic. The car got a kirk rollbar, kirkey road race seats, and harnesses over the winter. I also swapped the 3.73 I had in instead of the 3.45.

The rollbar made an awesome difference in how solid the chassis felt. I was hitting the curbs and the suspension was soaking up the bumps. Last fall when I hit curbs it would really unsettle the chassis.

My new personal best is a 2:28.3, gopro battery died during that session though. Video of an earlier session is below. I have a bad habit of not committing to the throttle through the exit of a turn. The car has plenty of grip and doesn't oversteer, I just need to stay in it and go.

Next event will be CMP in May.

I use a Bluetooth obd2 scanner and the racechrono app on my phone. Then use race render software to overlay onto the video.

Something like an aim solo would be better, the phone's gps doesnt really update fast enough for reliable speed info.

So similar to the Torque Pro app for android?

323titorup
04-15-2015, 02:51 PM
So there is obd 2 in your Ti:s?
For lap time the internal gps
Is 100% correct but for curbspeeds and placement on the track you need an external gps. Cost like 50 to 100 dollar

spidertri
04-15-2015, 02:58 PM
Its similar to the torque app, that just displays the car info. Racechrono uses the obd info as an input while it records the gps data so that everything is synced up. If you mount the phone to the dash you can have lap times and predictive stuff from racechrono, I usually just put it in my pocket and let it run.

Yeah '96+ tis have obd2 in the US. I'd rather get an aim solo than an external gps.

Was at CMP last weekend, really fun track, I think I like it more than Summit Main. It was a 5.5hr drive for me though, probably at the limit of my comfort range.

Did a 2:01.7 with a 2:00.3 possible. Going to go for my HPDE3 check ride at the next event and start building the car towards TTE/PTE.

Edit - Oh and I repacked my remus exhaust (props to Ced back in the day). The resonator was completely burnt out, packed it with FMF 4 stroke motorcycle packing and it made the exhaust soooo much less droney. If you listen to my previous VIR video you can hear a ringing at high rpm, that's gone in the new video. I also tossed on PFC08 pads, they stop real nice...
