I had left the headlights on bc my instrument cluster has no lights...lol possibly bc i took out the radio and heating console to change the small bulb and socket that lights the heating controls...so i had to boost my car(first used a booster...didn`t work...then booster cables with the green lights verifying the connection...still didnt work so i used normal cables and the alarm goes off totally freaking me out) I think one of the wires from my subs shorted the instrument cluster. I am the helpless mechanic lol my dad is a mechanical engineer and shop owner in Georgia. But I am in Canada with a black on black 95 318ti that I bought this summer. Im learning little by little but this page has helped me so much(expect a donation soon) I`m in love with this car...I wash her all the time and have been enjoying her movement with her new snow tires...donuts all over town!! You actually shorted out the dimmer rheostat inside of the headlight switch. It controls the instrument cluster lighting. Replace the headlight switch and all is good.

lol Apparently! Thanks for your help brother!! Greatly appreciated!

No worries man, it happened to me and several other members. Chances are, your window switches, HVAC controls, Cig lighter and door lock button probably don't light up either. If you remove the headlight switch and carefully take it apart, you'll see a white plastic or ceramic block with what looks like a spring bent in a horseshoe shape. That spring is the rheostat. It's really hard to get a good look at it because of the angle, but usually towards one of the ends you'll be able to locate a break where it shorted out. If you have a very fine tip soldering iron, you can fix it. However, you have to be very careful not to melt the adjacent parts and/or damage the switch/circuitry. The 318ti shares the same headlight switch as the Z3, but is totally different than e36 coupes and sedans. There's two different part#'s for the 318ti/Z3 headlight switches, one has an extra feature(can't remember)but they both work. The factory foglight switch is very similar, but it won't work as the circuitry is completely different and it doesn't have the same pin configuration. Check realoem.com for the correct part#.

I just bent some of the tabs in and only put in one screw and allowed to it hang kinda freely, I thought I blew out one of my speakers but I found out that it was just smushed against the bracket so I just put in one screw and let the side rest on the part I cut out and then the front just hangs down.

From the service manual...

For reference, the BMW Oil Service requirements are approximately equivalent to the maintenance that other European manufacturers specify at interval with a maximum of every 7500 miles or 6 months.

Even if you only put 10 miles on your car in the last 10 months. The oil should still be changed. Oils, mineral and synthetic, change over time.

That being said, "bad oil" would have caused all of your problems. Get the oil changed, but something else, or some combination of things, is going on.

Could be an air bubble in the coolant and a bad tps or other sensor.

Should have done the manifold swap while I had it all apart... but this was just a wiring harness replacement. Mani swap coming when I can afford the injectors, 3.5"hfm, M3 cams and a re-map.
I read alot of DIY's on the manifold removal, and everyone made it seem so difficult, i was terrified. Its mainly the last bolt near the firewall that people complain about but with a cheap ass swivel socket, I had no issues getting it out at all. The most annoying part for me was getting that effing fuel rail out of the way enough. I popped off an injector but gas started dripping out, and with my old school mechanic light I didn't want to risk burning the house down! lol
I also thought the wiring harness was going to be a big deal, but everything was so obvious to me once I got the mani off that it was no issue... its back together now, not as pretty as OEM wiring looms, but the wires are all tied down and you can't tell from looking at it, so im happy!

Only kicker, I broke the plastic tab on my vaccuum resevoir... no big deal to me, as long as it doesn't rattle around. ZIPTIES FTW! ;)

This Friday Front brakes and I did it in 1 hour just like "Just Brakes(r)" but didn't come back with the bull crap extra bill "you need to rebuild your calipars and replace all hoses and springs and valves and muflers bearings and gutinator valves, etc. It's going to cost you $2,899.95.". Only cost me $59 for the brakes and I did the sensor too. WaHoo...Got 60,000+ out of the fronts which I changed w/rotors when I purchased the car and I've never changed the backs since I've had the car still got 50% on them:biggrin:

Was taking the family to Legoland down the street, looking cool as usual, lowered my window to show them my pass and when I raised it back up...clank....pop....and I was looking at the back of my window pointing straight up! Went home and pulled the panel off and got it back to working order in about 30 minutes. I have a feeling I might be doing this a little more often than I would want to. Thanks to COOLJESS with his step by step window repair thread it was a snap and not a crash(of glass)!

Right, well I am a week late in posting this but might as well:

Replaced the two small plastic cooling parts. Quite frankly the one on the back of the engine was easy to install and not really that much trouble [reach through the battery holder hole.

Replaced starter and replaced the 4th fuel injector [these two were done at dealership].

Needless to say; I replaced all of the necessary gaskets / O-rings as well.

I fixed the oil filter housing gasket leak as well. The top left bolt snapped on me and since this is common I would recommend you get some Freeze Off. This will enable you to take it right out.

Also, another note: The alternator is a real pain to get out and put back in. So, what I did was filed down the mounting brackets on the alternator and lined them with White Lithium grease. Alternator slides right on now without a problem.

Changed the Oil [5W-30 Castrol Syntec...got it for $26.99 at Advanced Auto on sale. Vs. the typical $58 price tag.

Bleed cooling system as well. Tightened up the throttle cables. Cleaned out the upper and lower intake manifold completely. 5 cans of Carb cleaner and some patience does wonders.

Repaired rear hatch door lock. It stopped working [i.e. wouldn't open unless you slammed it]. Easy fix btw.

That's it for now.

Next on my agenda:
Replace control arm bushings, replace brake pads, rotors [front, if necessary], and bleed brake system.

I put the passenger door back together after finishing the window slider/track fix. I also did the extra tail light mod. so i drove my car today. as i was getting on to the highway, the temp gauge goes up. so i put my heat on full blast and crack the windows, as i get to my dad's house the temp starts to rise at a stop light, while i'm at a dead stop. so i start accelerating as the light turns green and it starts dropping. i think it could may be the head gasket. the coolant isn't leaking. i'm going to replace the battery and spark plugs. then i'll look at the head gasket, and see if it could be doing this problem. i don't like driving my mom's prius. mind you i'm taking a week off of school to get this fixed and my dad is coming back to chicago tomorrow night. also could it be those coolant hoses that tend to fail??

Not the headgasket. If a HG fails, you'll know it. you will at least have milky oil, or oily coolant, will generally consume coolant, and will run like ass, even if it doesnt steam out the engine bay.

If your temp is truly dropping as you accelerate, i would look at blockage in the radiator, as well as bent/broken fins, as well as look at the thermostat and waterpump, make sure the belt is not slipping. If you can afford it, i would replace the entire cooling system: Radiator, thermostat, water pump, hoses and coolant. If you are mechanically savvy, its not a huge job, but a shop will hit you hard in the wallet.

If you had hose issues, you would be leaking coolant all over the place.

I washed mine today. It really needs to be waxed too, but didn't have time today. Maybe I'll do that in the next couple of weeks when I do several other projects on my list. :-D

I'm giving it a wash this weekend  Might also wax it!

Well today is a sad but happy day. I took the cover off of the engine bay, washed and waxed the motorless beauty(actually started this yesterday). Then I took all of the Ti parts, folded down the rear seats and stuffed everything in the cargo area. The buyer is coming down from San Luis Obispo later this afternoon with a flatbed. That's the sad news.

The happy news is that I found a '98 M coupe locally with a blown motor for 5k and I talked the guy down to $4200 cash. I'm keeping my S52 which will eventually find it's way into the M coupe.

Before you guys freak out, I'll start by saying that the guy who bought my Ti is already a member on this site. He has plans to drop an M52 in it, so the west coast will have yet another swapped Ti rolling around. The M coupe is gorgeous! Interior is flawless and there's only one spot on the passenger front fender that has some damage from the 17x10 CCW's rubbing. It's black on black and only has 114k miles on the chassis. As mentioned before, the motor will need swapped, but I already have the S52 built up and ready to drop in.

I'll still check in on you guys from time to time. Probably daily just to help the community and answer questions. Besides that, I didn't stray too far off the path. Afterall, a swapped Ti is just a wannabe M coupe hiding in an e36 body. I know, I know, the M coupe is an e36 yada yada, but you guys know if you had the opportunity you'd do the same thing, so don't be hatin:cool:

I bought all of the parts to do the front brake upgrade to vented discs. I will install tomorrow and put some miles on this junker! Funny that the non-ti brakes cost about half. So the upgrade comes out to a whopping 50 bucks or so more than I was plannning to spend on the one caliper/rotor!

Hi Greg,

If you are going to rebuild the cooling system and you need an extra hand let me know. I just did mine and things are fresh in my mind. I am free all weekend starting April 10th.

Good luck ;)

If you had hose issues, you would be leaking coolant all over the place.

cool thanks brad! thanks tony! I didn't see any coolant just thought that it was those hoses which is cool. haven't checked the radiator as its at my dad's house and i'm staying at my mom's house right now.

The next couple of weeks I'm focusing on car maintenance. I doubt there will be anything exciting done though. Got the A/C system looked at today. There's a hole in one of the lines which will need to be replaced, plus I'm going to have the dryer (or whatever it's called, don't remember ATM) replaced too. Hundreds of dollars I hadn't planned to spend, but luckily for my car I'm in the mood to be nice to it. :-)

Also dropped something off to be refinished. Finally. :-D

Cleaned out a bunch of gunk build up on the bottom of my car. In the process I took out the fan and airbox to give myself room for the side of the engine cleaning. Found out that at the dealer they took out the filter and shoved it back in there again. Brand new Purolator filter ruined because the retarded mechanic didn't have the patience to put it in correctly. Stupid.....and to think I drove 500 miles with a filter that wasn't seated properly.

Yesterday I got my A/C problem diagnosed... $100 for time and materials.

Today I got the problem repaired. (leak in the low side line) Also had the receiver drier replaced. The mechanic noticed that the belts were cracked pretty badly so those were replaced too. $685 for time, parts, and materials.

I ordered some parts last week, and I've got another part to pick up in a few days that'll put me over the $1000 for the week. Yay. But hey... the A/C is frosty now. :-D

Todays project was to install the new cowling bits. Silly me dropped a washer into the air plenum (see cowling replacement thread (http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28369)) so I added "change cabin air filters" to the project list. Total time was about 1:30 which included changing the cowling, figuring out a way to make the cheap E-bay filters work, installing the air filters, and changing clothes.

I'll add a pic of the filter mega-ghetto-hack in another thread once I get the pic off my phone and find the thread.

By the way; don't buy the radiator at NAPA or AutoZone. Go to autohausaz.com

I checked Advance Auto and they sell it for $200 [approximately]. Autohausaz.com sells it for $164 with free shipping. While you are at it make sure you buy a new radiator cap and if possible a brass bleed screw.

I think I have a spare brass coolant drain bolt for the engine block so don't worry about that one lol.

Yesterday, FINALLY got the M-tech spoiler installed. Purchased used, professionally painted and installed for a little less than purchasing a new one.

I still need to get the emblem for the spoiler. I ordered one from Tischer, but it has two studs on the back, which makes me think that it's for the side moldings. Does anyone know if there's a different part number for the emblem that goes on the spoiler, and if it's a different size? I could just cut off the studs and attach it, but would prefer to use the correct emblem if one is available.

Today, installed the Mason Engineering front strut brace.

Sorry for not washing the car before taking pix, but it looks like Mother Nature is preparing to wash everything today anyway.

Paint looks pretty good, just needs a clay bar, polish, and detail to bring the paint back.
Front bumper is missing the complete center section along with the belly pan. Original owner complained that it would overheat in traffic/stop and go but was fine on the freeway. Well when I got the car It seems like it has a clutch fan and another electric fan on the radiator itself, is that right? Time to find some Diagrams of the cooling system.
Needs another bumper and Belly pan for starters.
The original owner also told me the heater would not get hot unless the car was moving so I figured they did not bleed all the air out of the system, I removed the res cap and the bleeder bolt and proceeded to fill with water while i had the heat and fan on high.

Interior is pretty darn clean except for the steering wheel, ok I am getting some heavy duty cleaner and disinfectant to clean the interior up!

Really bleed the cooling system well... Here's a good writeup; http://318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27983 Should help with the engine temp and heater.
IIRC, Ti's just came from the factory with electric fans, no clutch fans (someone could have added an extra one)

Mtech style bumpers are extremely cheap at DDM tuning, decent quality and fitment too. If you are So-Cal, go pick one up, as it costs more to ship it than to buy it... If you are in NorCal, then come meet up with the NorCal crew!

Hey Wolf,

Thanks for the pointers, I just read the whole write up and funny thing, first thing I did was check the cooling system as I do on all cars I buy. Esp since I have been through 32 rx7's and still own 3 of them. This is my second BMW, my last one was a E34 89 525i that went 334k miles before i gave it to my cuz and he blew the motor. So here I am with this 318ti not knowing much about them . I removed the cap and the bleeder valve and ran the car on hot with fan high and filled till i saw water recycling though and level was at half way. Took it for a 1 hr drive and no problems but I have yet to test in stop and go traffic.

Also the Ignition switch is stuck on the on position and has the special mod for a switch and push button start. Key has to be in ignition due to the chip i guess, Want to fix this also.

The check engine light is on, how do I get that serviced or check it myself?

Let's meet up. I live in Oakland CA 510! right by Ikea.
Maybe you or any other 318ti guys can help me get this baby running good, or at least point me in the right direction.

Advance Auto Parts Store is a great resource to have if it is staffed by a decent set of guys who own and work on their own cars [like here in Chicago :D ] Anyways, it is an auto parts store much like NAPA.

Anyways, they have an OBDII scanner and they don't charge a dime to scan your car and tell you what is throwing the code.

Right on guys, I think I can find someone with a obdII scanner.
That is exactly what I was thinking.
After working on Mazda RX7's for the last 17 years I got rrotary tunnel vision, all of those can check the engine with the onboard codes it throws with the number of short and long blinks of the check engine light.
I used to just pay for my old E34 '89 525i to get worked on all the time but never had a check engine light on that baby. RIP. 334k miles gave to cuz and he blew the motor.

I refuse to go to Autozone or even Kragen for any parts.
I usually just stick to fluids - funnels - wiper blades - detailing crap and simple things, never parts. Parts I usually buy used OEM - Brand new from the dealer or rebuild myself to avoid crappy china parts or ****ty rebuilds.

but if they will scan my codes for me for free ok!
Maybe I can pick up some 2 stroke oil for my Rotary Rocket and fluids for the BMW tune up

LOL ROFL Sorry, never buy parts from AutoZone or any other generic shop unless you are working on Ford or something.

I am a die hard fan of www.autohausaz.com for my BMW parts...

Today I took off the drivers side door panel on my '99 to fix the door brake. Naturally, the #1 and #9 panel clip holders separated from the door panel. If you don't remove the little tag that says "Airbag" on the door panel to get to the THIRD Torx bolt, you run a risk of cracking the side of the door panel. Don't ask me how I know. :(

While I was in there, I got my trusty can of White Lithium Grease and greased the bejesus out of the tracks and pivot points. I was having so much fun that I removed the passenger side door panel too to grease that side and, of course, the #9 clip holder separated from the panel. JB WELD KWIK is AMAZING stuff! And it does the job.

Got finished with that and I replaced the dried out and rotting Left and Right Windshield Cowlings.

It's time for some 18 year old Single Malt.....

yeah removing the door panels is always fun. I've super-glued the clips and they hold very good till I have to grease my window clips again.

I replaced the intake heater bypass hose I installed for the DASC. It blew on Tuesday and left me stranded in Tampa (23 miles from home). Fixed it today by blocking it off from Ipcapitol's pictures. All good now. Nice project to keep my mind off things.

Also renewed vacuum lines to boost control valves and waste gate and aired up tires.

4:20 right now and sleep:biggrin:

I figured out a remedy to my "spoiler emblem issue." The part that I received would probably snap right into the side moldings, but the spoiler requires a "stick on" emblem. So, I finally realized that I could peel the actual emblem off of a hard plastic carrier and then just stick it onto the spoiler.

I never did find a specific part number for a spoiler emblem, but the part number for the one I used is 51-13-2-264-666... and yeah, I had a devilish time figuring it out. LOL

BTW... DDM sells a replacement "BMW Motorsport International" badge. (http://www.ddmtuning.com/index.php?p=product&id=93&parent=21)
