Piston rings? I think?

If i need new piston rings, would problems would i be experiencing while driving? In other words, while driving, mainly in 1st and 2nd (2000rpm-3000rpm) i can here a slight rattle. This can also happen when i tap (rev) the accelerator before taking off. Any advice guys???

most noticable problem is going to be oil consumption and low power depending on how worn they are. i dont think there is a particular sound to go along with worn rings. the best thing to do would be a compression test or, prefferably, a leakdown test. if you have a compression tester you can do this yourself and it will tell you if you have low compression. although low compression could result from a problem with the valves as well. the leakdown test will tell you exactly where the compression is leaking.

the compression test will basically tell you if you have a problem. if you do...thats when you do a leakdown test. so have the compression tested, it cant hurt.

so have your compression tested and keep an eye on your oil if you think your rings have a problem. thats my advice.

ps. a BROKEN ring will rattle and make lots of nice noises. although im pretty sure the car would be running awful with the dead cylinder. if it runs smooth i'd assume the rings are intact

Hey thanks allot guys, but i spoke to my mate whos a mechanic and he said it was the cat rattling for sure. So thats gunna get replaced when i get the supersprint cat-back exhaust in a couple of weeks, HAY!!!!

ahh yes mine did the same thing...i forgot about that. yeah around 2700 rpm especially the heat sheild would rattle like crazy. i just ripped the sheild off and no problems so far. although i'd be skeptical parking on dry tall grass since those cats get HOT. although i think the main reason the sheild is there is to keep the cat running hot so warm up doesnt take too long. i havent notced anything yet though.

Bimmerboi, you ever have a ram-air intake on your car? If you did, does the engine allot cooler with the fogged air-box than the ram air(w. heat shield)?
