Could be the VANOS. My ti does that too once in a while.
Does it quite down after you drive a little while.
My mechanic tells me it is because the oil needs to recirculate first.

Low on oil? It's not a valve tap?

I have a motor in Enfield CT if you want it. I'll be back up there at Easter. Simsbury is just the other sie of the airport, about 10 miles from my house/shop.

Call me at 516-242-3933 if interested. Perhaps I can diagnose it for you that weekend as well?? Could be a valve train part, particularly if you hear noise from the throttle body (which makes no sense at all)...

the 1.9 doesn't have vanos as far as i know.only the 6 cylinders.

I'm really stumped now. The sound SOUNDED like a water pump, and was coming from the front of the block in that area.

Steve: Where does the VANOS 'rattle' eminate from on your car? I'm leaning toward timing chain and/or tensioner now, but this is pretty unlikely. Does it have a oil-pressure pump-up tensioner like the old Land-Rover does? When that gets problems, it can rattle a bit. The LR tensioner has a toothed piece, so as pressure drops, the tensioner can only move back a small amount.

P.G.: I'm sorry I failed you! I was certain that was the sorce of the noise.

On the bright side: those original factory hoses were just waiting to fail. As was that belt...

ya the belts and hoses were in need of replacement that is the bright side and i did notice the water pump fins were bent so i was sure that was the sound but nope i think im just gonna run this motor till its dead and just do the swap

Out of curiosity: how did the INSIDE of those hoses look? Were they all cracked near the ends?

I can't believe they were original date-stamped factory hoses STILL! And those belts were SCARY...

You certainly won't regret the swap, as you had a small taste of my (cold engine) car.

I'm really curious to know what that sound is from...

ya the hoses were real ruff looking as far as the swap i have some good side jobs coming up in the near future so hopefully before the end of summer i can do this once i know i will be getting the cash i will have to get your book of knowledge to help guide me and yes that small taste of the cold motor run we took has sold me man the power is nice
