Folks,
so I've discovered the rattle in the back is not due to shock
mounts, heat shields, parking brake cables nor bits of change in the
spare tire. It's a broken diff. mount--at least the lower bushing in
it.
This wasn't too hard on my 320i of yore, the mount can't be more than
$50. Has anyone done this? Any advice for doing it on your own vs.
a shop. I wonder if a new one can be installed without detaching the
drive shaft. I can't imagine a dealer willing to do this on a
98k car--even with the CPO.

thanks for the advice--B

If it's just the rubber bushing mount...

Drain the oil.
Remove the bolt that goes throught the bushing.
Remove the bolts for the diff cover
Remove the diff cover
Take to shop to have old bushing pressed out and new one pressed in.
Install diff cover with new bushing (will need new gasket)
Add oil
