I'm new to this forum and have a question about tires for my rims.

I currently have 17x7.5 M double spokes and want to get Continentals. Are they any good?

Also, can i fit 245/40 17's on a 17x7.5 rim? ( for the rear only).

thanks,

PS: this forum is great! i'm just sorry it took me so long to find it. i've had my car for 5 yrs already!

Those tires are not going to work, the tires that you have are 9.64566929 inches wide. and the rim is only 7.5 in wide. You can go a little wider but that is to much. Just so you know how to read the tire size. The first number is the width in millimeters. So 245MM = 9.64566929 inches. The second number is the height of the wall and is a percentage of the first number 245MM x 40% = 98MM = 3.85826772 inches. Then normaly you will have a letter like H or S or Z this is the speed rating. then the last number is the inner diameter or the size of the rim that you are putting the tire on.

With the rims that you have I would tell you to go with something like a 205/45 H 17 - All you need is an H rated tire (up to 130Mph). I don't know if they will make a tire like that tho, they may only have it in ZR rating (150Mph and higher). Hope this helps here is the rating chart just for your information:

Rating - MPH
B - 31
C - 37
D - 40
E - 43
F - 50
G - 56
J - 62
K - 68
L - 75
M - 81
N - 87
P - 93
Q - 99
R - 106
S - 112
T - 118
U - 124
H - 130
V - 150
W - 169
Y - 188
ZR - Over 150

I have a set of 235x40x17 on my 95 Motorsport wheels.
OEM would have been 225. So yea, 245 is going to be a bit wide.

Just to avoid mis-information, the '245' is the width of the TIRE at it's widest point (typically between tread and bead) and NOT the tread width (but on low-profile tires, they tend to be close, typically 1/2 inch narrower tread than cros section.)

Tire Rack has great charts with actual dimensions of the tires they sell, and reccomended rim widths, which is very usefull. Check it out.

I have 245's on 7.5's and 275's on 8.5's (Michelin Pilot Sports). I do not reccomend the 275-8.5 combo. This is too big for the car (and the rim for that matter, but only by 1/2 inch) I had to 'massage' my rear quarters a bit... That and the 1.9 wont be able to spin the added weight...

265 is the widest cross section tire I would put on the 8.5. Problem is the limited selection of 265/40-17's in the world. Ferrari and Corvette seem to be the only users of this size. So, that's Pirrelli and Goodyear... 265/35 would probably be even better, but I think it's a non-existent size...

I said what J!m said but may not have made it clear here is the tire rack page that explains.

I bought a set of German Rial rims size 17" X 7.5". I also just bought a used set of Dunlop SP8000 235/45/17 tires for those rims. 235 seems to be the max, I had a hard time finding a 235/40/17 tire.

225/45 is the OEM offering for that size wheel, works well and not too heavy. Also of course it keeps the gearing correct.......go for Michelins.....although the Conti's are great tyres too.
