View Full Version : Up shifting problem

Yesterday I bought a 1995 ti with an automatic transmission (A/T) . I really put it thru its paces before purchasing and everything seemed normal.

After driving approx 150 miles at 75 mph, I slowed for traffic when I noticed that the engine would rev approx 1000rpm when the a/t shifted up from 2-3, or 3-4. This would happen about 30% of the time.

There is no hesitation when shifting from drive to reverse or vice a versa. I did not see this condition while conducting the test drive and I do not see any fault lights on the dash.

I can't find a dip stick to check the A/T fluid, looking under the car I don't see any evidence of A/T leaks.

I thought that the transmission may be slipping and that I should change the fluid and filter; but I am told this generally is not necessary on the 318ti. In that, I can't find the A/T dipstick I am not sure how to do refill the transmission. I will need to find a Haynes manual before proceeding.

AAMCO and the BMW dealer mentioned that there is a computer that controls the A/T- I have no idea what trouble shooting I can do on my own.

Any thoughts/ suggestions.

There is no dipstick for the at solution....it is supposed to be good for life or some crap like that...Not real dure if it really is though...I have read that it should still be flushed and stuff like that...

If you inadvertantly touch the Auto/Manual button in Drive it will shift to 3rd and hold there whether in Drive or in 3rd (good for forced downshift). At times doing this on a hill in Drive and then pushing Auto and lightly lift on the pedal will let it upshift. It senses more rapid acceleration and holds rpms to a higher rev limit. The 318ti A/T is controlled by computer and will respond differently if on a hill during acceleration or if more rapid throttle pressure is applied. I think all of us who have 95s have experienced this sometime.

Don't you believe that about permanant fluid. Have a BMW independent shop or dealer fluid change and new filter kit. I had it flushed and Redline ATF put in, but it is getting to the track on occasion for DEs. 50K max on fluid should keep it going longer. Mine had 70K when bought and it was the first thing done. 10K mi. later I had the flush and Redline put in but I use the manual for downshifts alot too.

Thanks for the update on getting the TransFluid changed out...I really thought that it should be done, but just have been told by so many people that it was not necesarry.
