I guess one way to tell is if the car is OBD I then you have an M42, & if it is OBD II then you have an M44. I am thinking thought that you may not know that off the top of your head? You can probably check the VIN with the dealer and they can tell you. Also if you have AFM (Air Flow Meter) then you car is an M42, M44's have MAF (Mass Flow Sensors) on the intake track. If you have a throttle heater, a whine for a few minutes when you first start the car then the car is a M44, M42's did not come with that.

Hope that helps.

If you have a metal oil filter top with a 13mm bolt head, M42. if you have a plastic top that requires a big filter socket, M44
Jeff,

That is not always true. I have the plastic oil filter cap and my production date is 9/95 and my car is an M42.

The m42 also looks smaller than the m44. it's in the way it's fit in. the m44 (in my case) has been surrounded by more plastic on the front and stuff. the m42 was much more wide open and you could see to the ground between the fan and the front of the engine itself. that's been my experience between the 95 ti and the 97 ti. I've read that the 42 was more tuneable...but that's open for debate...

m42 which is obd 1 is way more tunable. m44 is a better daily driver, more torque
