Hi,

my alarm has stopped working on my E36 318ti compact :-(

I have tested the radio remote.............that works!

looked at plenty of online help and even tried the open boot, open door, turn ignition 5times sequence to try to get remote to talk to the module............this didn't work!

so i have turned my attention to the alarm module...........aparently there is a switch on the module which will help me re-configure the remote with.

got glove-box off and am faced with tangle of wire and various modules but cant be sure which one is the alarm module.

can you guys help me identify which one it is??

image attached (hopefully)

None of those are the Alarm Module.
On my 1995 I had to remove the knee bar and the Module was attached to the back side of it. Let me see if I have a photo to share with you.

In this picture you will see the wires behind the gray/silver bar. That bar is what you need to remove. There are 2 bolts up inside these 3-4 inch tubes. I think they are 12mm...but I could be wrong (I did this in 2007). Once you remove these bolts the panel I am holding above will come out.

Once you have the Module in hand you will find a little trap door in the back. Open this door to find a slot for the chip located in your key fob (1995) and press the little button. A red light will come on inside of the Module next to the chip...it's now set to your Alarm Module. Remove the chip, put it back in the fob, button everything up. And thank me later.

You could try disconnecting your battery for a few minutes but make sure you have your radio unlock code.

I would also suspect that module at the left. You have got a fair amount of aftermarket wiring behind the glove box.

You could easily overlook the factory-installed alarm as it is an extension of the ZKE (central locking/window electronics) -- which is not that module. The other pictures are of the Alpine system BMW dealers installed in U.S.

Could you post a picture of your remote controls?

Hi guys,

firstly thanks for the replies!

teetime4one and 1996 328ti..........I think that might be for US models (forgot to mention that its a UK spec model, might be different).

I dont have a knee bar to remove or the module as you point out isnt hidden behind anything, what you see in my picture is all thats there.

i think 3.2ti and John Firestone are correct and that box on the left is the alarm module.

i'm gonna try to disconnect battery as suggested.

John a picture of my remote is attached...........its the 2button version.

Does that make a difference.........why did you ask??

John a picture of my remote is attached...........its the 2button version.

Does that make a difference.........why did you ask??That's the spitting image of the remote from the add-on BMW DWA V alarm kit. The module left of the huge arrow could be its control unit. Last I checked, BMW Munich was selling out the kits for ca. 120 euros each: should you have one and need another.

Hiya, sorry for reviving this thread but your inbox was full so thought I would post here for all to see :P Was just wondering whether you managed to fix it and how? Also wanted to know if you'd found that the module on the left under the glove box was part of the alarm system. I'm currently having alarm issues on my '98 ti with the same 3G two button key fob alarm system and as i'm also in the UK, I have the same modules behind the glovebox. Thanks for any help you can give :)
