View Full Version : Removing resonator/mid muffler

I need some opinions about removing the resonator.
My previous car (1991 Audi with 5 cyl) i had the resonator/middle muffler removed and replaced with just a straight pipe, this reduces weight, created asimple flow and better sound. After a while, however, i got tired of the contant humming from inside the car. I don't have any experience with BMW sounds, just wondering if the loud humming would also be prevalent in an M44 engine.

Thanks,
weezer

My friend has a 2000 ford focus, and he replaced the headers and put an all new exhaust on and in place of the cat. he put a resonator...We took about a 1 hour trip last week and there was pretty much a constant hum the entire time...

Has anyone ever tried the ANSA cat back sport exhaust.
Thinking of getting it , there is one on ebay for less than $300.00.

Alot of people have had problems with the ansa falling apart. Spend the extra money and get a supersprint or stromung. Those seem to be the exhaust of choice, and they aren't too pricey.

Is it possible to replace the actual cat on a OBD-I M42 without the check engine light coming on?

It depends on wether or not there is an O2 sensor after the cat. I don't know if there is, but if so then all you need is an MIL eliminator. Basiacally it sends the signals that the 02 sensor would so you don't have a check engine light on.

Are mil eliminators universal or does a company make them for bmws?

The supersprint racing resonator replaces the cat and the o2 sensor is before it on the m42. I'm still thinking of getting it.

it's the pipe that the exhaust connect to.

Replaces the cat in the exhaust system.

Header To Resonator to Exhaust.

The Opels that I had owned had a front muffler before the rear axle and a resonator behind the rear axle. The RealOEM calls the whole assembly after the catalytic converter a rear muffler. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CG53&mospid=47505&prod=19950500&btnr=18_0235&hg=18&fg=20&PHPSESSID=aa482615e4b90a1aa6240d184aedc275
