Lengths are all the same. Pressure is different (N). I'd suggest the strongest ones for any use, until proven wrong!

This is from the BMW ETK:
Trunk Lid Closing System - Shortened Gas Pressurized Spring:
51 24 8 199 736 L=582MM/390N
51 24 8 206 652 L=596MM/380N from 9/94
51 24 8 230 070 L=596MM/420N for vehicles w/ Rear Window Wiper
51 24 2 491 349 L=596MM/430N for vehicles w/ M Tech Rear Spoiler

I got them from my local BMW dealer. With the BMW CCA discount they were less than $21 each.a few months ago.

They are pretty cheap at BMW dealer. ON and off in 5 minutes. Get new ones or your head will suffer the consequences.

anybody know of any that will hold up in the cold weather? Mine drops on me every morning when I get my books out of the trunk....

I'm guessing the bottom one is the strongest. I need to replace these too, just wanting to know which ones have the most pressure, thanks.

I would say that is a good guess.
I find they don't last more than 2 years though.
My struts are starting to get weak now that it is getting colder.
I have the M Tech spoiler.

the last set i bought were $65 for both. they were the stabilus brand, and not a real improvement over the OE mestestehterstingkneirhjers.

that was 4 years ago. i've just held it up for the past few.

thanks guys, i'll be giving a call to the dealer tomorrow.

Its a good thing that this post was up. My shocks for the trunk are worn out too, unless it's because i added the M-tech spoiler, or both. But yeah, i noticed that the trunk's been falling on my head every so often :dizzy: Whenever i think it stays up, it falls down haha...good post :D

can somebody hook me up with your (car) dealer's number? places around here have been quoting me $50 . . . apiece, and no cca discount.

if i'm throwing money at somebody, i'd rather it go to a place that doesn't jack up the price, or if she's a good dancer.

Call Tischer BMW, Silver Spring, MD.
Tell them you are a CCA member before asking for the price.
301-890-3000 ask for parts. Locally they give 20% off MSRP but you must tell them you are a club member.

I got conked on the head today and my hatch struts are only maybe a year old. :(

As I said once before, I can't see any reason not to use the strut designed for the spoiler for any application. That one is: 51 24 2 491 349 (L=596MM/430N for vehicles w/ M Tech Rear Spoiler).

If you're a CCA member, just pick up the current issue of Roundel and call some of our dealer advertisers on their 800 numbers. Many folks are pleased with Pacific (page 12) and they'll ship anywhere. Just be sure to give them your BMW CCA number and tell us what you find out.

i may go with tischer then, just because my friend is coming back from the UAE (he's originally from chevy chase) and i have to drop off a wakeboard for him.

phil, thanks for the part number.

I wouldn't count on just strolling in there and picking them up. As far as I can tell they're not the stock strut for any U.S. model but they did have them in the Jacksonville parts depot when I ordered them. Took a day or so, depends on how badly you need them, how helpful the parts guys want to be, or how much you're willing to pay! Good luck.

i'd definitely call a week ahead but it seems i won't be heading down there anyway. i'll give pacific a ring and let everybody know what they're charging.

pacific is quoting me 22.94, tischer says 25.20
(NOTE: these are for the strongest gas shocks)

Was Tischer with a BMW CCA discount?

I tried to look that number 51 24 2 491 349 up in the system and couldn't find it. Are you sure it is the right one?
