I bought a set of Rial 17" rims. They have a width of 7.5 and an offset of 38.
The tires I saw on Ebay are Dunlop SP8000 235/45/17, and Tirerack says it needs an 8" rim to fit. Am I taking chances with these tires? Even the wheel manufacturer says to use either 225/45/17 or 235/40/17, but does not list 234/45/17.

The taller side wall will actually make it easier to mount. I don't think you should have any problems. I was running 235 wide on a 7.5" wheel with no problems, but it was also a 55 sidewall so that may affect things a bit.

Ive got 225s on 7" and would love to go to 235 or 245. Tirerack lists most 245/50 or 235/50's as 6.5-8.5" or 7-9".

OK, but is using 235/45/17 tires on a 7.5" rim dangerous or unwise?

Tirerack says 235/45/17 fits 7.5 thru 9. Specified for 8".

Doesnt look like a problem to me.

I looked everywhere to find where you got that info, didn't find it. Please put the link in a post, so I can read that. All I found was 8" and higher. The exact tires in question are Dunlop SP 8000 235/45/17.

Anyone out there running 235/45/17 tires with stock suspension?

Thanks
Eric

Why is the side wall an issue? I thought the width was the main concern for my size rim.

According to this (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) site, 235/45/17's will make your speedometer 2.6% too slow, so when your speedometer reads 60, you're going 61.6 mph. (I love that site!)

I knew about the speedo issue, I was concerned more with the safety issue.
