Has anyone replaced an oilpan gasket? I've looked under the can and there is not much room. Does the engine need to be lifted or the bottom cross member need to be removed?

Thanks for the help.

I have the same problem and the Bentley manual said you have to raise the engine and remove parts of the suspension. My leak was hardly noticable so I'm gonna leave it alone until I have another reason to do all that work.

Both, You need to drop the subframe, but leave the steering shaft attached so it wont fall too far down. Only 4 bolts hold the subframe up. leave everything else attached.

How much would you think it would run to have the oil pan gasket replaced at a mechanic's shop? A BMW specialist and such.

It shouldn't be too much of a project, however it might be better to leave it to a shop, since special tools (well, equipment) might be needed. Only 4 bolts hold the subframe up, but the motor mounts also connect to the subframe, so they must be unbolted, which will work nicely since you can then jack the engine up higher while dropping the subframe at the same time. The only thing is, you cant jack on the oil pan for an obvious reason, it's being removed. But with a tall "dead man" jack, a lift, and other basic shop equipment, the job would not be too bad. But I dont think it's a DIY in the driveway kind of thing

BUMP. Anyone replaced this yet? Mine started to leak significantly in the past week. It has been crazy cold around here lately (-15F), so I'm thinking that may have triggered it?? Maybe it'll get better when it warms up some?? I'm thinking of tackling this in the spring.

I was quoted about $420 for an independant BMW shop to do the work. Actually $740 for a new pan, gasket, oil & filter. The pan was $320 alone.
