Turbo???

I just got a 318ti , its a '98. I didnt get a manual and i dont know if its a E36 or E46. Is there a difference and which one is turbo?? maybe someone can help me out, thanks....

E36 & E46 are Chassis identifacation numbers, as are E21 & E30.

E36 cars were made from 1992 - 1999

E46 cars were from 2000 - Present

The new three series that is coming out in 2006 is going to be an E90. As for Turbo I am not sure what yuou are reffering to. Currently BMW does not factory turbo charge any cars except for the diesels.

AS they were saying... you have an e36 body..also you have an e42 eninge, which comes inhandy if you do any tuning. NO BMW comes stock with a trubo altough everyone thinks... If your car had a turbo you would def. feel it. BEcasue of the lack of performance i wnat ot turbo mine but it is a bitch to do, you have to cut away the fire gaurd on your eninge and then proceed to find a small enough turbo to fit, it is a custom challenge.. Godd luck let me konw if you find any turbo kits fo rthis car...

Alot of that is wrong.
His car is an E36 chassis
His car has a M44 engine
Some turbo BMWs had turbos
What is a fireguard?
Most turbos will fit inside the engine bay, and the sizing of the turbo really just depends on what you want from your car.
Mosselman makes a turbo kit, but it requires some customization to make everything fit, or so I've heard.


And back to the original topic, if you want some more power I would suggest looking at a Downing Atlanta SuperCharger (DASC). Do a search on google and you should find plenty of info on it.

#18ti have an m42 enigne... go look it up, unless he has the 1.9l tha tmihg tchange it but most have the inline 1.8, also i go tmy engine bay scoped, there is no room for the trubo, unless you do iner fender cutting, also you can remove the firegaurd which protects the driver form an exploding engine or fire. If the turbo would fit the stock engine with no custom work, i would have on eright now. But it doesnt.

There ARE companies that make turbo kits for the 318ti. I saw a while back someone on the site was trying to sell one. You don't have to hack anything apart to make it work, just some minor work. The DASC is the best way to go, if you can swing the price.

azs; 1996+ had a 1.9L M44 engine. i bet you have a '95, which has the 1.8L M42 engine. correct?

and i think you mean firewall, which isn't only a safety feature, it's part of the frame's structural integrity.

there were turbos other than the tdi diesels; the 645 csi comes to mind. but, we're all in agreement that it's rare, especially stateside.

-95 318ti's have m42 this engine is also obd I (obo) 1800 cc

-96 on 318ti's are a m44 obd II (obo) 1900 cc

pretty much the same engine as in spec such as HP and Tq, but the M42 has a stonger bottom end.

-The TI markings in any BMW has never ment turbo.

-not even the 2002 where the ti and tii were markings of different carbs or fuel injection. The BMW 2002 turbo was a different car.

-last you can fit a turbo on it w/ out modifications to the fenders. Molselmann did it and there is someone on Bimmerforums with a custom set up. Also you can make a manifold to have the turbo sit in front of the valve cover (like in a saab 900 turbo) in the open space or put the battery in back and have the turbo there. For gods sake run it to the intake side and keep the turbo cool like porsche did on the 944 turbo (951). There is a turbo 318 on Barverian cars website that did that.

-you'll have more issue with getting extra fuel and predetination than turbo placement (with 10:1 comp).

Lol. Very very old thread. You had me reading there for awhile until I saw the year. Haha. Yes Ti does stand for Touring International. I had someone's dad think that it was a turbo, I had to tell him no but on the inside I was wishing it was so I could proudly say "Yes" :tongue:
