Hello,
I am looking for your recommendations on a good flywheel and clutch
setup. I am getting parts together for a auto to manual tranny swap. I finally found a good tranny and driveshaft (from a '95 club
sport w/40k). I will probably end up buying the rest of the parts
new, but I don't know what the best setup is. I would like to get
the most out of the new manual transmission and DASC.
I read Rogue, UUC, and Fidanza all make flywheels for the TI, which is best for the price. (Damn...$500 for a flywheel!?!)
Nopi sells a centerforce stage 1 kit for $285. Is it good? How does it compare to the SACHS kit?
Any ideas? The car will still be a daily driver, except for the time
it takes to do the swap. I am also looking for a pedal assembly,
master & slave cylinders, 3.45:1 differential and other miscelleneous parts. Please let me know if you have any pieces for sale.
Thanks!!

I was considering a lightweight flywheel as well. I'm also interested in a LSD. Are you looking for an open diff or a Limited Slip diff? If I bought another diff, I could sell you my open diff 3.45 that is in my 1998 318ti 5 speed. Car only has 38K miles on it.

Another possiblity is using a stock M3 flywheel. It is heavier than the lightweight ones that you mentioned, but it is about the same total weight (clutch and flywheel) as the stock ti setup and it has alot more holding power. It's also alot cheaper. I picked up a used M3 flywheel with 28k miles on it for $45 shipped. I do not know about the specifics of the CF clutch for the M3, but I have had nothing but good experiences in the past with centerforce clutches.

L84THSKY-
How soon are you looking to get the LSD? I might want to get a LSD myself, but if the price is right for your...I could probably put it off until the 5 speed swap is all finished up and tweaked.

are you guys aware you can have flywheels machined smooth and lighter like a brake disc, at a much cheeper price then buying a new one...

I have the turner 9lb flywheel and I love it. Response is great and acceleration is improved. I have seen on other cars as much as 15 rwhp gained from a lightened flywheel.

I say it was worth the extra price considering it is from a quality company, and the engine revs real fast now. If I drove a stock ti I would think the tachometer needle was stuck.

My goal is to upgrade my diff and also the flywheel/clutch combo. What I'm not sure about is this. If I switch to a 3.73 LSD and a lightened flywheel, will the car wind too much. I'm thinking if I go with a 3.45 LSD, I get the benefit of the limited slip, but no increase in RPM. Then the lightened flywheel gives the added acceleration, without the RPM increase that a higher geared diff would provide.
Basically, I want no increase in RPM's when cruising but better traction and acceleration off the line.

I have the 3.45 LSD and it still winds up real quick, but I have thought about switching to 3.73s. I would say that when traction is lost it is really lost because the engine revs up so fast. For example a loss of traction at 3500 or 4000 rpms will send the rev counter screaming to 6000-6500 rpms. Flooring the gas dry pavement with a regular start without a clutch drop will not cause a loss of traction, but a clutch drop, as with drag racing, the drop point must be changed or else the rev counter will shoot to 6500 again and still have the tires smoking and the speedo will read about 15 or 20 miles per hour.
