I don't think you HAVE to lift the car, but I don't see how you could get under the car to work on it without lifting it. I can't even change my oil without lifting the car.

I know when I am under my car the sway bar is right up against the oil pan.
I also have the xbrace that would need to be removed. Not sure about what it looks like under a M44 engine.

I would check the book for the exact details. I am think there maybe a lot envoloved. I remember on my 82' 320 to replace the oil pan gasket you need to remove the pan and rto remove the pan the fron axel has got to come out. Good luck, let us know.

I just changed my oil last weekend, very cold day. When I went under the car, I now realized that the x-brace I installed is right over the oil pan. Atleast I got to see if the nutserts were holding, and they were. You would definitely have to remove the brace to replace the oil pan.

If you are wondering why I would change my oil on a sub freezing day, it's because I needed to put in thinner oil. For some stupid reason, when I did my first oil change in November, I put in Mobil 1 15/50. We suddenly got hit with a cold wave, and I got concerned about the oil being too thick, so I replaced it with Mobil 1 5/30. I guess I will go to 10/40 in the spring.

There's some info in this post (http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4075&highlight=gasket) that might be of help.
