Hey I thought it would be cool to see what every one has "topped their car out at".Most I've ever hit has been 128mph with a cold air intake and chip reprogrammer.

I am probably hitting 115-120 at the track but I rarely look at my speedometer.

115. Stock. Automatic. GPS recorded max speed, no clue what the speedo was reading.

Anyone know of any good safe on the engine horspower gains you can get for under 400$.

Oh, and I've been to whatever the car is governed at. I was watching the road, not my speedo.

I have the garmin colormap streetpilot III, a GPS, and has a trip computer that records the max speed... according to that (which happens to be a little less than the speedometer reads) I was going 156.9 mph . but I read it right at the beginning of the 160 line. @ 6700 rpms

Speedo said 120, GPS said 116. On a stock 95 club sport.

That makes no sense. Usually the GPS is more accurate. The speedo is inherently low.

well.... that was my reading. the gps is accurate... but the reading is late. there is a delay, because if I am going @ a constant speed, is a lot closer, but if I am accelerating, the reading is not 100% precise. I beleve for an accurate reading you must be @ constant speed. so it does make sense right?

I've actually found my speedo to read a little high. I've compared it to all of my friends cars and my dad's truck, mine tends to read a few mph higher for some reason. At my speed limiter the speedo reads 120mph but I believe I'm only doing the 116 limit.
Not for under $400.
I meant each of them individually, not as a group.
And I was just about to call bs on you maurolin, but then I realized who it was

Stock, it's governed at 116. The speedos are off. Mine reads 120 too.

When you all say the ti is governed, does that mean the car completly shuts off or just the rpms stick in a certain area?

I believe it is a soft limiter but at 190 km/h (118 mph), an M44 doesn't need to lose much power to reduce the car's road speed. I once triggered it by feeding the DME a higher speed at 4500 rpm but could overcome the limiter with more throttle.
Once in a while, I hit the 6500 rpm rev limiter on the Autobahn but haven't noticed what the speedometer is reading. There have always been more important things to watch, such as traffic!

I hit 135 in a 55mph zone then I ran into too much traffic and had to slow down. Not the smartest thing I've done!!! I forgot to look at the RPM because I was too scared to take my eyes off the road.

i did 100 mph at road 295 at new jersey, and my dad told me taht he once did 145mph at the road of I-95 at pennsylavania. i was kinda happy about the speed that i did it felt good.
i hit 120 in a fully stocked 318 on the 78 in san diego. I would of kept going but i cant afford to have my car impounded.

I went up to 115mph on South I-75 with my stock automatic, but now I have a chip in it and the governor is off so I need to try it out again.

Haha I was gonna start this thread, but I saw it was already here...
First off I'd like to say that I'm an idiot.
Now that we've got that out of the way, I top my car out just for the hell of it at least once everytime I make the trip from NY to FL or back, maybe just to keep me awake. Probably not the smartest thing what with the cops and all. Anyway, I haven't done that since I started modding (recently), but in completely stock configuration my 97 can do 120 (maybe a little more, if I'm on a downhill, haha), which I believe is what it is limited to. That's the fastest I've ever been in a car. Closely followed by one time when I was a lad driving my mother's 96 Taurus LX, I think that topped at about 115.

The speedo is set to be off like 5mph at 100mph. So your speedo tries to keep you from speeding by telling you you're going faster than you really are. (=

On Interstate 15 coming back from Vegas I hit the speed limiter at 125 or so, in my 99' TI Sport.
I also have a 95' 318IS, and have gotten it up to 135 on the 210 around Flintridge. With a 345 rear end though I am almost pushing 6K, I think the exact RPMS are like 55 or 5600. So I am think the speed is going to be around 140, maybe 145 tops.

Would 5800 rpm be about right? That would be 118 mph in fifth when the U.S. speed limiter steps in and takes away the punchbowl. The top speed when you remove the limiter is 213 km/h or 132 mph.

Well personaly i think speed in a straight line is dumb ,(im a drifter) but since its a top speed thread , the first night that i installed my performance chip i just had to test it with 4 people in the car, worn out rear tires with like 4 huge lumps ,and on top of that the right Rear shock mount decided to make the shock tap on my 6x9, anyway to the point i had alot of space on the Belt PKWY West (to JFK from Brooklyn ) and it was 3am (empty) I picked up 136mph on the speedo at like ~6700 rpm cool huh ???

Lets see the top speed i've been in my 96 ti was about 110mph on I-75 in Florida, but I didn't want to go any faster cause of cops and if I get a ticket my parents said they sell my car. And that would really suck.

How can you hit 136 MPH on a stock "TI"? The Speed Limiter shoud have stopped you in the 120's and the ReV Limiter should have stopped you in the early 6K's.

I'm all about acceleration, not top speed. But since I have had the opportunity to ride in some of the fastest cars in the world(Lambo/Ferrari), it can be quite exciting.

I don't know how I did it. The actual speed was probably around 130 because of inaccuracies in my spedometer but it read 136. As for the RPM, it stopped just before redline and I just looked, this is 6300 not 6700.

110 in my stock 98 ti on I75 Ft Laud to Tampa Bay...
125 in a 735i 5spd on altamont pass to I5. that car had power to spare at that speed, plus the living room sized seating in the rear...
105 in a 94 sts [she'd do more,too] also altamont to I5...
105 in a stock miata many times [I suspect she'd do more but she's less confidence inspiring than the others]...
62 in a 1980 Westfalia downhill from Tahoe with a strong tailwind...

ive only had my 318ti to 115mph. it was as smooth as ever, but the rpms were way up there, and i didnt want to push it too hard. but, my modded e30 325iS has been at about 150mph, and my 325iX at 124.

Or perhaps it just gets masked out by pavement irregularities and wind noise.

On that bike you don't even have to try hard, it just wants to go and your going some ridiculous speed before you know it. I'm scared of that bike, its just too powerful. And I was wearing my jacket and helmet and a good pair of jeans, so had I fallen it would have still hurt, but I didn't so thats what matters :caffine:

normal jeans won't save your skin (literally). neither would most leather they sell as motorcycle jackets. you should see how my friend gets suited up with kevlar pads, full race suit and all that after finding out in a rider safety course what even low speeds will do to normal leathers (and jeans will go before those). if you value your skin at all (and you do NOT want to know what you have to go through if you get road rash), get the proper equipment. those guys who ride around with no helmet, jeans and a t-shirt are friggin' nuts. be glad nothing happened and you're still walking around with everything intact :) the things we get away with (usually in our youth) is amazing ;)
