In the spirit of "Letterman", I have decided to create my own top ten list:
Top Ten Things I Won't Do to My Car:
#10-Add a 6 CD changer
#9-Put any decals on the windows
#8-Put anything but 93 Octane in her
#7-Bling the interior with chrome
#6-Change the color of my gauges
#5-Buy a Bra
#4-Put anything in or on her saying "M3", my car is a standard model
#3-Put a Subwoofer in the trunk
#2-Tint the Windows
DRUM ROLL...............AND THE #1 THING I WON'T DO TO MY CAR..........
PUT ANYTHING IN HER "MADE IN ASIA"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :evil_lau:

What's wrong with tint and a subwoofer in the trunk?? How about you think about it this way,.. say I had tinted windows, a subwoofer, a type-R sticker and all the rest of the crap you said + a supercharger,.. i'd think you'd shut your mouth and let it go by? would you???

Yes I did, and I replaced them with Bosch platinums. :evil_lau:
that evil laugh must be for your responses in this thread then, where you found the bosch's problematic and wanted to go back to NGK:
http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3128
you may be more patriotic than the engineers in munich, but at least they have practical performance in mind.
to some (many) people on this board, nearly all of your list fits certain needs / wants in their car. let's go through them:
10. i have a changer so i'm not fumbling around while driving. this keeps my eyes (and attention) on the road.
9. i have a cca sticker on the left passenger window to show my enthusiasm, and both required inspection stickers on the windshield. i've also left the factory alarm / EMF warning stickers on.
8. i drive. a lot, around 18K miles per year. i can honestly say i see little difference between 89/93 on the highway. around town, that story differs.
7. bmw "blinged" the M roadster and coupe, as a sign to their heritage.
6. bmw is considering blue-lighted gauges in upcoming models, to suit the vision needs of their target market.
5. ever track your car? racing tape and a bra is a good idea for that short period, unless you like spending $400 to repaint the front end. also, 7K mile cross-country roadtrips with a bra would have certainly limited the chips i needed to repair.
4. but the motorsport division stripes are okay?
3. lets face it, the bass response in this car is piss poor, as it is with most factory models (save for the volvo s70, which comes with a 10" woofer). some people just want tighter response; it's not always a sign of thumping bass.
2. ever live down south? ever go there? got leather seats? do you like your vinyl to crack and fade?
1. i return to my original statement. bmw themselves put japanese parts in your car because the german ones were problematic.
i'm not trying to change your mind, i could care less. and i respect that you have a certain "ideal" surrounding your car, but please realize that 1. you're dissing half the people on this board 2. you're not always right (the plugs).
even a highly respected italian superbike manufacturer sees the value in using japanese parts (namely, the motor). why can't you?
97Hellrot318ti
03-06-2005, 08:14 PM
Just to add to that, I have an amp and a 12 in subwoofer in my trunk. I don't own a single rap CD, which kind of eliminates the whole "thumping bass" concept. My set-up vastly improves the quality of MANY types of music, some that you probably wouldn't expect. I've turned up the subwoofer to hear the basslines come through in classical music, bet you didn't expect that? Oh and it really helps for anything by Sublime.
Also, back to the decals thing... contrary to popular belief, decals do not add 20hp a piece. The accepted standard is 5hp per decal, sorry to burst your bubble... hahaha

There's nothing wrong with playing a CD, but having to go to your trunk to do it is silly. Second, a trunk is for cargo, a sub is not cargo.
I do have leather seats. And finally, it's only my opinion anyway, but it does create interesting debate.

There hasn't been a problem with my Bosch Platinum 2's either. The '95 ti's came with them from the factory. I'm with ya on your list, I thought about tint but just seems too much a hassle worrying about scratching it, and all the stories I've heard about some not holding up over time. Real funny L8, had a good laugh reading the thread. Took balls to post your list.

well i disagree with some of your list...but i got it as a joke no big deal...but here is my responses!
1. i hate cd changers...blah
2. i have decals on my rear windshield because i like the way they look and the extra hp is nice too
3. i put 91 octane because my parents pay for my gas and they get mad when i spend 35 bucks for a tank of gas
4. i think some chrome stuff is cool looking but i dont have that much money so i abstain
5. i like white gauges...but then again comes the issue of money
6. i hate bras...i want to burn them
7. i like m3s...but my car isnt an m3, therefore i have no m3 decals on my car
8. i have subs in the trunk because it sounds better than the stock setup...lot better
9. if i had money i would tint my windows...but im poor
10. i use cheap asian parts sometimes...why? because i have no money...so i sacrifice quality/brand recognition because otherwise i couldnt get anything cool. i got knock off clear corners that were made in asia probably...look like oem...fit perfect...never had any condensation in them or anything...work fine...

There is also the age issue. When you are 18, subs and tint are high priorities.

LOL, You’re starting to sound like an old mother. >=o)
If you've ever owned a nice house or an expensive bicycle your statements would contradict themselves.
Think about it. When you buy a nice mountain bike, you interchange and swap parts(according to different variables) on a foundation you feel is the best suited (according to your opinion on quality).
The whole point is to have the ULTIMATE DRIVING VEHICLE suited to YOU.
And in that my friend is the true essence of UNIQUE.
edit: also, none of what u said makes sense .. insofar as all the "mod.'s" you've had done with your car could easly represent the same things you said about "certain upgrades". >;o)

Hey, I'm not trying to insult or jump on the bandwagon here, honestly (I actually agree with a lot of the list, but that's besides the point). But just out of curiosity, are your pedals genuine ACS? And if so, and also if you don't mind me asking, how much did you spend on them?

03-09-2005, 05:10 PM
I knew that those pedals would come back to haunt me. My Scirocco had nice aftermarket pedals, so I decided to get them for the bimmer. To be honest, I got them on Ebay and they cost only $25.00. That leads me to believe they are of suspicious origin. They look great, no country of origin stamped on them. If my conscience starts to get to me, I might have to forgo that mod. I have to check, but I think they say AC Scnitzer, but for that price, they can't be genuine :?

Haha I know, I got the same ones (most likely). They're definitely japanese, almost 100% sure. CERTAINLY not AC Schnitzer. Look almost exactly the same though, and look great in the car. I felt really horrible about getting them, but they were the nicest looking ones I've seen (for a 318ti). I've looked around stores and stuff for other pedals, but generally they're universal and look ****ty. It's just I really didn't want anything knockoff on my car really. But whatever, looking at them now I really don't regret it. They are great.
I'm pretty sure the real ACS set (w/dead rest) is in excess of 500 or something like that... they're nice, and it's a good name, but not worth 500 bucks of my money.

1. I HATE!!!!!! Non symetrical shift knobs. The chicken bone black vinyl shifter than comes stock is creepy.
2. The Momo is not chrome, it is aluminum, and it feels great in my hand.
3. I had a Momo in my Scirocco and I had to have one in the Ti.
4. Bling is getting a chrome emergency brake handle. How often do you even "touch" that handle anyway????
My hand is almost always on that shifter knob, I want comfort, not bling!
Anything else????? Bring it on............ :evil_lau:

But to you L8, I ask this: Why let other people make the decision on the pedals? I can tell you right now, they're fake. They didn't even fall off a truck, they're just fake. do whatever you like man, it's your car after all. for me, i would still think that a cca or 318ti.org sticker would be appropriate on window glass.

I can vouch for the pedals, installation is about as simple as it gets... though for me it was a little time consuming to get some of the washers on behind the pedals... I had to use smaller ones on some of them. But I am quite happy with my purchase. The pedals work great, and I used lock-tite when I installed them to make sure they stay nice. And I'll say it again, they look great.

...at the same time, I get Eric's point: We bought a BMW because it was a BMW and not a Honda. (No offence to the Honda folks, I worked for Americam Honda for 6 long years back in the 90s). The reality is that the 318 ti is now the kind of car that some younger folks can now afford and their "sensibilities" may vary somewhat from guys that were born in the 60s like Eric and me.
I have a buddy who bought his new M-Coup over an M3 largely because he felt the M-Coup buyers would be more elitist and purist than the average M3 owner. He was worried about the association that the car would bring to him. Yikes...
But, I'm kinda in the same boat: When I see a 318 ti that is Silly-Blinged, it makes me think about buying a new 325 at invoice before the new models arrive. I love the car, but...
So, my ti is bone stock (down to the ContiSports) and it's just the way I want it...on the other hand, maybe a new shifter would like kinda cool. HA!
97Hellrot318ti
03-10-2005, 08:03 PM
I understand EXACTLY what you're saying, you don't have to be "born in the sixties" to appreciate it. However, I hardly believe the pedals would qualify as "silly-blinging." I mean, before we analyzed the pedals and realized they were fake, it was a non-issue. Honda is not a word that comes to mind when I look at my pedals. Anyways, the only qualms I have with them are ethical (which were pretty big at first). If I found of set of pedals from a really unknown name-brand that were not knockoffs, and looked good, I would have bought them over the ones we're talking about in a heartbeat. However, as far as I could tell, there were no such pedals to be had. And with the actual ACS pedals being ridiculously far beyond the price-range that I can accept for *pedals* (an exhaust could be had for the same price), my decision was made for me.

Being a product designer I have some inate respect for BMW designers- really one of THE top jobs, even under Bangle. I like most of what they do for the sports models, BUT, the ti was also marketed to hit a price point. That means the designers could not get everything they wanted into the base model. No designer is ever going to say "hmmm, I think 15" wheels and spongy soft springs would be quite nice here!". So, if you don't have a sport model I think minor tweaks are OK.
IMO 99% of after market body kits do not accentuate, they detract. Likewise with vaders in our Ti's- the M3's they came in had more curves inside. You get my point.
Now L8- those pedals suck! (I'll give you $20 for them though). - j/k

Someone tell me what the meaning of both my license plates are, and you get the pedals. Oh and just to add some fun to it, tell me the make, model and year of my bike. If you get the license plate question correct, but are having problems with the bike, I will post more pics of the bike.
RULES:
1. If you went to my website, you are disqualified.
2. If you are over 35, you are disqualified, for reasons not divulged.
3. You can NOT just decipher the full words, you must know what they have in common, the theme. In other words, the origin of these two statements.
Good Luck.......

what is the other plate? are you allowed to tell me what the other plate is!
so far the best bike guess i have is
Triumph Bonneville 750
still working on the year...1978! that is my best guess so far...ive been searching google for 2 hours now...
seems it could be a 78 or a 74...
is that the original paint in the picture l84thsky?

One point to make. Bonneville is the model by name, but it has an identifier TXXXX identifier associated with that model and year. You must provide that as well.
Look at it this way, if you don't win, you will have learned a great deal about Triumph Motorcycles. :mrhappy:

so, chrome is a big divider, but what's the deciding word on suede??
a buddy of mine works in a 'baller' car shop (www.hotcarrss.com) and hooked me up with a set of suede shift and ebrake booties. they're the same color gray as the stock crappy vinyl ones, but are buttery smooth and have red stitching. they're not at all gaudy, and fit well with the ti's interior.
as far as shifters go, i've got the short momo in black leather. it's a good fit for both the car and my hand. i'm trying to decide if i should go with an aftermarket steering wheel (momo) or try to find a leather stock wheel and keep the air bag.
i've seen the pedals everyone is talking about-- the acs style. i'm looking to run either momo or sparco; not so much for looks, but for feel and function.

So, my ti is bone stock (down to the ContiSports) and it's just the way I want it...on the other hand, maybe a new shifter would like kinda cool. HA!
I am having the very same thought, I bought my ti with the original 15"steels on and conti sports, I have now fitted 17" genuine BMW alloys and they look bloody good I reckon...but...the ride.......oh the ride! There is absolutely no doubt that the ride had deteriated a good few notches, of course I expected a difference, but I dont think I am as happy now as when I was with the 15" steelies on........so I now have a lovely shiney silver chrome set of original BMW alloys which would have been standard option fit on this model, and they are just waiting for the contis to be wrapped around them before I fit them in place of the 17" wheels.....crazy eh? Well maybe not.....it really did "handle" better with 15" wheels, it may not have had as much "road holding" but you really could feel it drift and control better.
But I bet when I get the 15" alloys on it, I will look at it on the drive and think.......hmmm maybe I should try the 17" again....hey look so cool!!!

Those were the days, when I lived in England. I had a left hand drive VW Scirocco, and was stationed at RAF Alconbury. Thanks to the ****ty gas on base, my fuel injection got destroyed. Turns out water had leaked into the tanks at the base gas station. I couldn't prove they did it, suing would have been futile.
Never had a problem with that car when I drove it in Germany prior to getting stationed in England.
Needless to say, I was glad to get re-assigned back to Germany, where I can buy gas at any Esso station, not just the base gas station.

What year/s were you there L8 ?
L84THSKY
03-14-2005, 08:21 PM
Actually, I didn't even spent one year there. I was re-assigned to England in Oct 1991 and left in July 1992. There was a big drawdown after The Soviet collapse. I was at Lindsey AS (Weisbaden) Germany, very happy I might add, and they said I had to leave.
The logic at the time was, whoever had the MOST time left on their assignment was to leave, and those with less than a year would go. That pissed me off, since I volunteered for an extended overseas tour, to get in this special Combat Comm Unit. After coming back from the Gulf War, they say I must get re-assigned. There were three of us who were in those situation.
The assignment team came to our unit, opened there magic book and started the bidding. Who ever took the assignment first from the list got it. The first guy jumped at RAF Mildenhall, the second guy jumped at RAF Alconbury, and I waited to hear something else. All that was left was Izmir AS Turkey. I refused to go there, so he looked a little deeper. He said I could go to a comm site called Martylesham Heath UK, but it was scheduled to close. A month before I got to Martylesham Heath, they changed my orders to RAF Alconbury. When I got to Alconbury in Oct, they said they were over manned, since the traveling maintenance team moved to Mildenhall. So I said...great, now I can get in my car and drive back to Germany! Not so fast, they had to wait until an assignment team came again. Then I ended up back in Germany at Ramstein AB. A big circle that eventually put me back in my original combat comm unit.
The problem is, each country has a seperate Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). In England, you can't get gas off base, unless you pay full price. That meant I must hop skip and jump to each military installation to go anywhere.
In Germany, they issue gas rations that can be used at any base station and any ESSO or Autobahn BP station. That meant I could go anywhere in Germany and pay stateside prices.....yippie
One final note, my son was born at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon, England. I promised him when he is 18, we will go back, and I will show him where he lived. Granted he only lived there from Feb 1992-July 1992, but he's a bloke just the same. :)

yea it's washers and alan screws, and an alan key... pretty simple... the ones they send you are too big to fit on the gas pedal anyway (the gas pedals shape has a side wall sort of, and the washer doesn't clear it, you'll see what I mean when you try to install it, or when your friend does or whatever). I ended up buying smaller washers, and cutting out the top side part of the gas pedal to make room.

i installed my ACS pedals today...took forever...the hardware they send with the hex head and such didnt fit right...they were a little too short...so i used the hardware i got from ace hardware for my friend (he is still out of town...hehe...ill have to get him new hardware sometime)
it was hard to get the nut on for the gas pedal because it is attatched to the floor...is there anyway to take the gas pedal off? that would alleviate a lot of the pain if you could take the pedal off, drill the holes, bolt the ACS pedal on top...and then you would also be able to cut any part of the pedal off the back so the washer fits on...then just reattatch the pedal to the accelerator arm...
and well the brake...ehh drilling through steel takes FOREVER. i went through three drill bits to drill 4 holes in the brake.
basically...im asking if anyone has any valuable insight on how to quicken the process...because im probably going to end up having to help my friend install his...id like everything to go smoother the second time around....

the hardware they send with the hex head and such didnt fit right...they were a little too short...
The tools they sent worked fine for me, but I had my own hexes and stuff so I just used them, pretty much.
it was hard to get the nut on for the gas pedal because it is attatched to the floor...is there anyway to take the gas pedal off?
Gas pedal was BY FAR the hugest operation for me. 1) The issues with the plastic sidewalls and the washers not fitting. 2) It's attached to the floor. 3) It cruves to be slightly convex at the bottom, whereas the ACS ones do not. This leaves a slight gap between the cover and the original pedal... which just kind of annoys me.
There is probably a way to remove it... but rather than mess around with that, as I said before, I just cut some gaps in the sidewall of the pedal to make room for the washers, and give my fingers some working space. I believe I used an exacto, but any sharp cutting too should do. You don't need that much extra space, just a little to work with.
and well the brake...ehh drilling through steel takes FOREVER. i went through three drill bits to drill 4 holes in the brake.
Now, since yours is an auto, your brake is different than mine, but they are definitely both steel. Perhaps yours was thicker? Or maybe you just don't have the best equipment. I remember starting on the brake thinking that it was going to be a nightmare to drill through, but it actually went through pretty simply... I might have just had a better bit than you, I doubt it was the drill (though my DeWalt is pretty sweet). Try going to home depot or something and finding a stronger bit that's made to go through metal.
robcarync
03-24-2005, 01:03 AM
i bought brand new black and decker bits this morning specifically for this operation...actually i bought a 75 piece drill bit set...still broke 3 bits!
the hardware that they sent worked i suppose...but i had issues with the gas pedal because of all the funky walls and such...and it seemed like the bottom right bolt was a beast...because it was really thick back there...and the bolt wasnt long enough to actually put the nut on...so i just used ace hardware bolts that were 1/8 inch longer...and it worked fine...
i started on the gas pedal with the hex bolts they sent me...got three of them on, but couldnt get the last bottom right one because it seemed it was so thick in that part of the pedal that the bolt couldnt stick out enough to put the nut on...so i just took all three bolts out and started over with the longer ace hardware bolts...and the ace hardware bolt seemed to work dandily.
i also decided to forget about the dumb washers, because i didnt need to cut the wall out if i just used the nut.
likewise, i tried to cut the wall with the exacto at first because i was using washers, but just because there really isnt much space, i couldnt really see what i was cutting behind the pedal...blah it was a beast i say!
my friend has a manual car, and from what i have read, the clutch is plastic kind of like the gas pedal?
that would be nice because i dont like drilling through steel...
anyway, i suppose my plan of attack for my friends car is to...
go to ace hardware, buy the other set of hardware, give them to him and let him figure it out himself :)

Haha... good plan. Yea the clutch is plastic, was the easiest pedal to do by far. And our brake is shaped the same as the clutch, so it was the same aside from it being metal. I don't really remember what kind of bits I had, but I remember I bought them specifically for the task, and they weren't even that expensive. Didn't break a single bit, wasn't even that difficult. Maybe brake pedal is thicker metal on the autos than the standard transmission?
