#10 on my Top Ten List, was about 6 CD changers. This brought me to another, what I would call contradiction in logic, polyphonic/MIDI ringtones.

When CD changers first came about, they must have seemed pretty clever. But if going into your trunk is logical, then why not have your climate controls in the trunk as well. And then you could put the sunroof and electric window buttons in there too. It just doesn't make sense, but it has been established as "Normal"!

Now, switch gears and think about ringtones. Would you buy the latest Green Day album at Best Buy in polyphonic/MIDI format. Yeah that would be great, listening to all your music in MIDI format.

The point is, MIDI is a holdout of an old and illogical legacy. When cell phones didn't have the processor power, or memory to record MP3 files, they didn't. As soon as the phone companies started adding cameras, and video, the MP3 ringtone evolved.

My Motorola V400 has a camera, but because it has newer technology and more memory, it can play MP3 ringtones. I can and do, create and install MP3 ringtones of my favorite songs. They sound audio quality, the way I would normally listen to music. The best part is, they cost NOTHING!

So why do people spend good money buying polyphonic/MIDI ringtones, when they could make their own? Simple, as long as a phone doesn't have the capability to make MP3 ringtones, people will be hooked on the idea of paying for those silly robotic sounds. The major carriers will keep making millions on selling these silly tones. Kinda reminds me of AOL, a total waste of money.

Fast forward 3 years from now, you won't be caught dead with a polyphonic ringtone.

Now, back to CD changers. They will be a thing of the past in the next few years. Why....because everything you want to do with your music system should and will always be at your fingertips, not in your trunk.

Why take your expensive CD's and risk damaging them in your car, or making copies to play in your car. You just end up with worthless frisbies after you are tired of playing them.

The future is in microdrives, compact flash or some other hard drive technology. You can burn all of you songs prior to getting in your car, pop in the device, and store 10 times the music that a 6 CD changer could hold.

Let's hope they don't decide to convince the masses that the mass storage device, belongs in the trunk, or the Paradigm lives on! :_paper:

Interesting...and yes, I agree with CD changers being in the trunk as kind of ridiculous. The only good use for them is when you want to play 6 CDs in a row, like on a REALLY long trip.

Having verizon, and not having a phone that I can add one of my 25,000 songs to, is kind of ridiculous. I have to pay 1.99 (or more on occasion) for a stupid ringtone, and it doesnt even have lyrics!!

Sure, maybe XM or portable hard drives are the way of the future. I am extremely content with my ipod/tape adapter, but the sound quality is a bit lacking. Soon enough, when I get my paycheck and tax returns, I'll be able to buy my Alpine head unit and have great sound and possibly also the ipod adapter! So yes, CDs could be outdated but they still have the best sound quality. Period. If its in your trunk and you want to listen to some music, either get your passenger to climb through the flip-down seat and change it for you, or stop and change it yourself.

Or install a cd player in the front as well..... :)

I have a cd player in my Blaupunkt head unit. But with my new Mp3 compact drive, I never use it. One 1Gb Microdrive holds about twenty albums, and I have two of them.

When all phones finally have Mp3 ringtones, you can make any ringtone you want, and they sound excellent.
