Heard that it was better, easier, and cheaper to do than a CAI. But what is it? How do you do it? Price? Ease? etc....I am thinking about doing it to help my aging car.

Named from Shawn Fogg, the guy on the 318ti Mailing list archive (10-96 to 10-2000) who came up with it.

I fogged my airbox, I have an M42 engine, and with my airbox, the 4 inch hole was already there, so i just went to Home Depot and got some Dryer duct and retrofitted it in there. It's a bitch to get the horn off though. I'd say it all took no more than two hours (fitting everything perfectly and neatly) and cost a whopping five dollars. To attach the duct to the airbox, i just used metal fittings that came with the duct to cover the lip, and i used little clamps to keep it on there. I mounted the other end to the left of my driver side fog light. Works great!

Sounds pretty deep too.

it works great , get allot more power in the higher rpms and it sounds a little deaper when you step on it which is cool. And it was nearly free only a couple bucks at home depot and about an hour to an hour and a half so it was a breeze to do as well i suggest it to anyone thinking of doing it :2gun:

question for JPerfect

I have an m42 as well...and i already have it 'debaffled', so it isnt connected to the snorkel or anything right now...the engine sucks the air straight from the 4 inch hole (which would increase air, as with the baffle in, the hole is much smaller).

question is, would i get any benefit by sticking the ductwork down there, or would it be about the same if i just leave it like it is without the baffle.

and where exactly did you mount the end of the duct? how do you mount the loose end exactly?

so basically....i guess my overall question is, do you think the 'fogged airbox' is any better than a 'debaffled airbox'

i always assumed it was the 'fogged airbox' because you ran the ductwork down to the fog light area...but wow...learn soemthing new everyday!

i put mine rigth next to my fog light and it works really good :2gun:

how did you mount it? it isnt just dangling down there is it?

do you have m44 engine or m42?

my issue is just that i already have my airbox debaffled, so i cant decided if it would be worth it to go ahead and fog it. i dont know if there would be a noticable difference between a fogged box and a debaffled box...

I have the m44 engine and i used a plastic pipe that was 4 inches wide then ran the ducting into the front bumper and then used a twist tie to secure it to the front bumper. I think it works well because it brings in lots of cold air and fast. Instead of just getting it from the 4 inch hole on the box it is sucked in from the hose. I hope this helps you sorry is is poorly written but its hard to explain. If its too hard to understand look it up in the notebook :2gun:

no apologies necessary...i'll fogg my airbox tomorrow and see if i can tell a difference...

as for the horn...any suggestions on where to relocate it to on a m42 engine bay?

is that dryer ducting ok? its flexible alluminum...is that what you guys used? im still not quite sure what type of hosing to use...i suppose alluminum is okay?

yes that should work fine. I really noticed that at higher rpms it really grew ALIVE .Post how it works :2gun:

Just did mine this yesterday using RIGID brand of plastic shop vac tubing - works great. I used the driver's side foglight opening for fresh air. I mounted the horns to the fender just to the right of the airbox. I used the airbox nuts and the original horn brackets to mount the horns in this new location. No hood clearance issues at all.

alright...im done and its pretty darn cool guys!

i noticed the engine is a little quieter than a normal debaffled airbox, but at higher RPMs, the car really pulls.

i took the horn out, drilled a small hole through the plastic cone type thing, and used a metal duct clamp that came with the duct work to hook it to the metal that holds the airbox in place. it kind hangs down from the airbox bracket, and loops through the hole i drilled to keep it from putting tension on the wires. although i really like the idea of mounting it to the airbox screws....ill probably do that to secure it better!

the horn was a beast to remove! i ended up pretty much ripping the normal mounting bracket off because i couldnt get any wrench to get a hold of that darn nut! i grabbed the horn, pulled it up and kinda bent the metal plate it was bolted too straight up...then i was able to twist the horn to unscrew the top nut that held it in place...it was on there so damn tight. the only way i could get the horn off was to actually grab the horn and twist that to loosen the nut.

then there was like horn number two down there above the foglight. i left that there, but kinda rotated it on the normal mount, took out the fog light cover, and pulled it down by sticking my hand in the fog light hole.

the easiest way was like that, just take the cover off if you dont have lights, and pull it down...it was hard to push it down from above because it just kinda compacted and squished together because its quite slinky - like.

i now changed the horn...it is mounted to the airbox screws!

looks pretty good i think!
