I noticed there are a few of you out there from WI; cali-ti, m44ic, DustenT, tborr2, others? Just was wondering about a get together for the SVRA races (May 13-15) or June Sprints (June 23-26) at Road America? I know you can get on the track at the SVRA for "parade" laps, it cost 40 bucks last time I did it, the marshalls are pretty liberal, let you drive pretty fast (100 mph+) as long as it doesn't get out of hand. How cool would that be, a string of ti's on the awesome 4 miles of RA? Either that or a get together at Great Lakes Dragaway? Cali-ti, you're from Union Grove, ever see any ti's at the strip? Let me know what you think. Thanks. Mike

Yeah, OK. My greatest love is auto racing, and you guys don't have a road course like Road America, the best (and longest - 4 miles) in the USA. It has been compared to Spa Francorchamps, one of the best in the world.

it sounds cool. my schedule is kinda hectic (gf lives in philly, we're trying to prepare for moving to denver in the end of june/july timeframe [including me looking for a job :S ]) and i have a ton of work to do on my car. let me know with as much notice as possible where you're looking at meeting and i'll do my best to join.
i must say, RA is really cool. went up with a friend of a friend who owns a pre-WWII MG J2. nothing like being out on the track with glorified bike tires with panteras flying by at 120mph (they make a nice roar at that speed, btw) :caffine:
i've lived here in union grove (aka smallsville or mayberry) for ~8 years and i have NEVER been to the drag strip

I'm in, just let me know the dates and times. I'm in Madison a lot in the summer months, so it shouldn't be too far to drive.

sounds good. maybe i can get a look at/ride in dusten's DASC
would contemplate that or possibly a 3.2L M3 engine swap. we'll see if i have a lotus elise by then and just go more into maintenance/tinkering mode on the ti :p
i should add, i'd rather do RA than the dragstrip. going straight is not my thing

OK, it looks like the consensus is RA, and since you are moving in June/July, let's pick the race before you leave. The big vintage event is July 14-17, I think that's the only other weekend other than the SVRA event we could get out on the track. Are you serious, maybe getting a Lotus Elise? I could only dream of that. I never even knew of the J2 MG's, from 1933? Oldest MG's I have seen are the T series. Got to drive a neighbors '59 MGA years ago. It would be great seeing your DASC ti Dusten, I know I have been talking about doing the DASC but have had so much going on lately. And M44ic, I should have titled this a BMW 4 banger get together.

hey who cares if your car is stock then you can see the improvements mods have done in the future, and no non of my friends have bimmers not to big of a bimmer craze in madison but my best bud has a nissan maxima that we swapped in a 5spd over winter and he just bought a vortech blower for it, and believe it or not that big @ss sedan hauls @ss without the blower, and my other friend who is coming has a 93 integra with a B16A1 swap so that should be a good race for me, oh and another friend with maxima is coming too.

I'll see if some friends from work would want to go, one just bought an S2000 and another's got an S10 pickup with a small block, he's the 1/4 mile guy. Maybe he would run it. Still waiting to get my ti wheels back from the powdercoat shop, still running on snows. Hope they are done by then. If not, maybe another weekend?

03-30-2005, 01:14 PM
thanks for the consideration mickd! so i'll do my best to attend the SVRA races (May 13-15). ****, that's pretty soon! have to get working on my car! the list just keeps getting longer.
wheels back from the powdercoater? hmmmm, interesting. what color? are you going to put a tire pressure monitoring system in when you have new rubber put on? forget where i read about a nice one, perhaps EC, i'll check. i don't check 'em as often as i should so it'd be good to have. i had to swap my snows when i took a nail/screw in my driver's side rear. they were 3 years old and i was going to get rid of them anyway, but still annoying being forced to change 'em!
EDIT: ok, found it in the feb ED: www.intellivalve.com. monitors air pressure and temp in all four wheels and displays/warns on a display inside your car. will have to check later for cost, but with savings from properly inflated tires, it could pay for itself in a reasonable time.
EDIT AGAIN: $250 (plus shipping i'm guessing). batteries in the sensors rated for 4 years (wonder what type they use and how much to replace?).
as for the elise, hoping my gf/future wife might get me one for my birthday next year (after we move to denver and she starts practicing medicine in the real world - she's a retinal surgeon  ). she's an awesome woman, and just might do it (i can dream any way)
mickd
03-30-2005, 03:13 PM
Yeah, it seems like forever waiting for the wheels. I got some '95 M3 double spokes and putting Pilot Sports on em. I tried to match up the original light aluminum but the color I picked is a bit darker and more metallic. Hey, never thought about the pressure monitoring, who makes that? That would be good since those tires cost an arm an leg, could keep the pressure spot on all the time. The powdercoat place is called Motorsport Powdercoating, they do a lot of work for racers and hot rod/custom cars. They were close to your neck of the woods, in Burlington, but just moved to Delevan.

hmmmm ... maybe have to give them a call. my dad found a place near where they live (in oregon, WI) which i was going to drop my calipers off at, but that's not real convenient. they were going to charge $200 for a full set of 4 calipers (which they would only do if i totally disassemble them, they don't want to be responsible for failed seals after baking the powdercoat). any idea what they'd charge for a set of 4 calipers? i'll have to look them up and give them a call asap as i was going to head to my parents this weekend to sandblast the calipers (assuming they all arrive before then!). thanks for the info!
as for the pressure monitoring, check my post above, i edited it in :)

Sorry for misspelling your name on the initial post, Dusten T, it's corrected. That would be great to check out your car, would probably make me get off my butt and do the DASC. So, the SVRA races May 13-15? What day is good for you guys? I don't want to be the one to decide what event we go to, it's all up to you. Just thought this would be best since cali-ti is moving at the end of June.

Just got off the phone with Tim from Motorsport Powdercoating. I asked him about the calipers and he said they would clean/powdercoat a single piston caliper for $35 each. They have to be disassembled. If you want the mounting brackets cleaned/powdercoated it would be $15 each. If you want to talk to him directly his cell is 847-800-7708. They do bead blast so that might save you the trip to Oregon. Hope this helps. Mike

That's great you're getting the wheels Fri., hopefully mine are going to be done by next Wed. and I'll get the tires mounted by next Fri. I can't wait! Can you believe this weather? It's about time! finally i can work on my car (although by this weekend i heard it's supposed to be back in the 40s ... dammit!!!!!). anyone want/need pics of the complete rear interior disassembled? i'm headed that way already and could easily complete the job. found a nice pooling of water in the driver's side rear seat (had soaked the pad underneath the rear seat) and am working to investigate where it's leaking (most likely guess right now is the cali top ... dammit!!!!). one of these days, i swear i'll cut a break.
have the following out right now: rear seats (bottom and backs), padding underneath the seats (hat to dry it out), side bolters, lateral panels, and trunk carpet. spare tire was dropped when i found problems with my stock 3.45 open diff (the unmuffled diff whine at 80mph is sah-weet!) so i should be able to pull the trunk side carpets and plastic tool kit holder without too much effort too :) did someone somewhere want pics of how to get their stock rear speakers out? LOL
btw, you can literally have the whole rear interior of this car out (assuming you have a place to store it) in a matter of 20-30 mins. those crazy germans!

Great Lakes Dragaway is about 30 miles south of Milwaukee, take I94 from Milwaukee towards Illinois 30 miles exit hwy 11 (Racine), head west on 11 approx 4 miles to 69th Drive, go left 'til you hit KR/1st Street/County Line Rd. (county line between Racine and Kenosha), you're there.

i was sandblasting my diff at the time (will post pics in my diff thread for those who are interested). POR15 products are showing up on tuesday (supposedly) so i should be able to continue the project some nights this week. powdercoated brakes are supposed to be done in a little over a week so hopefully i can start getting some of these things installed over the next 3 weeks ... finally.

I was pretty sweet, well my bud with the maxima pulled a 15.2 but he is a sh!tty driver at the moment and a corvette blew up while we were their, he had the wide open nitrous system and it hickuped or back fired and and exploded, so that was interesting. there was a lot of SRT4's and contour SVT's and about 25 maxima's showed up which was pretty crazy. But I had a lot of fun, my runs went all right I took out my driver side headlight to suck some more air its a great idea to do when your at the track I could really tell a difference in the car at higher speeds.

hey ... my name ain't cati-ti ... CALI-TI lol
you make it sound like i'm doing upgrades for the fun of it ... I WISH. let me rehash my little run of "luck" over the past few (4?) months ...
1) passenger's side half shaft popped out of the diff, but of course i didn't notice until my observant friend mentioned (while sitting in the back seat) that it sounded like my diff was making noise ... doh! bearings are REALLY whining good now. this i priority one.
2) front brakes are making some light grinding noises, stranger noises coming from the rear (it creaks like an old grandma), sounds like parking brake or one of the calipers may be dragging.
3) muffler is starting to rust out now (207k miles on original exhaust isn't bad i don't think. cat heat shield is also making a nice rattling noise.
4) found rust on the trailing edge/lip of my hatch (see pics in forum:exterior)
5) leak somewhere (just found where today - driver's side rear window, right around the latch) that was causing water to pool under the rear seat.
6) fuel smell in passenger compartment, more noticeable on warm days, believe it's coming from the driver's side access port to the fuel tank, possibly fuel line couplings which are quite rusted
7) just discovered last night, broken parking brake cable holder led to parking brake cable wearing on driver's side rear hydraulic brake hose (see forum: brakes). can't seem to find the part number for the cable holder in the ETK either. :x
there is probably more crap than that ... oh yeah ...
8.) belts are cracking and need to be replaced asap
i had the diff checked and shop said it should be ok for awhile. ebay'd an e30 3.73 LSD for less than $300 with shipping and am finally getting it cleaned up and painted. sourced half shafts from CA, arrived clean and tested. ordered all new mounting hardware, and flanges (except for drive shaft flange, which you can't get).
ebay'd 325/8 front brake calipers. sourced 318ti rear calipers from CA, arrived pretty clean. popped the pistons and disassembled. those are getting powdercoated now, should be ready next week. then have to rebuild them. got all new hoses, rotors, pads, clips, mounting hardware, etc for the brake job. sourced caliper grease, brass brake carrier bushings and new guide bolts, ate gold brake fluid (had blue before), brake pad wear sensors, all new parts for parking brake.
ordered (but have not yet received) all new belts, tensioners, pulleys. also ordered z3 shifter, all new refresh parts, delrin carrier bushings. this will shorten throw by something like 28%.
ordered and received supersprint cat back exhaust. best to be done with diff since it's in the way for that job anyway. actually, the brake hose and parking brake cables are right there too. easiest to do brakes, diff and exhaust all at the same time.
the rust and leaking issues will need to wait a bit. it just all needs to hold together for awhile yet. oh yeah, also planning to have rauch performance install camber kits, weld on rear trailing arm sway bar mount reinforcements, investigate the fuel smell and possibly have them flush the clutch too (after the brake job).
eventually, i'll actually get to replacing my driver's side mirror and fixing the dents too, lol
my gf asked me tonight, "is it time for a new car?" ****, not after i get all this crap done! :p really hoping to have the majority of stuff done prior to road america, i'll want to take 'er out on the track after all these improvements.
EDIT: forgot ... i haven't gotten to do a darn thing with the intake yet :evil_lau:

hey ... my name ain't cati-ti ... CALI-TI lol
you make it sound like i'm doing upgrades for the fun of it ... I WISH. let me rehash my little run of "luck" over the past few (4?) months ...
there is probably more crap than that ... oh yeah ...
8.) belts are cracking and need to be replaced asap
i had the diff checked and shop said it should be ok for awhile. ebay'd an e30 3.73 LSD for less than $300 with shipping and am finally getting it cleaned up and painted. sourced half shafts from CA, arrived clean and tested. ordered all new mounting hardware, and flanges (except for drive shaft flange, which you can't get).
ebay'd 325/8 front brake calipers. sourced 318ti rear calipers from CA, arrived pretty clean. popped the pistons and disassembled. those are getting powdercoated now, should be ready next week. then have to rebuild them. got all new hoses, rotors, pads, clips, mounting hardware, etc for the brake job. sourced caliper grease, brass brake carrier bushings and new guide bolts, ate gold brake fluid (had blue before), brake pad wear sensors, all new parts for parking brake.
ordered (but have not yet received) all new belts, tensioners, pulleys. also ordered z3 shifter, all new refresh parts, delrin carrier bushings. this will shorten throw by something like 28%.
ordered and received supersprint cat back exhaust. best to be done with diff since it's in the way for that job anyway. actually, the brake hose and parking brake cables are right there too. easiest to do brakes, diff and exhaust all at the same time.
the rust and leaking issues will need to wait a bit. it just all needs to hold together for awhile yet. oh yeah, also planning to have rauch performance install camber kits, weld on rear trailing arm sway bar mount reinforcements, investigate the fuel smell and possibly have them flush the clutch too (after the brake job).

oops my bad on the name, it was late and Im a moron
that sucks on all the sh!t thats gone wrong with your car, seems like mine is fallin apart at the moment too, suspension is clickin and my wheel emblem fell off. But on the bright side I just finished my strut bar today painted and everything, Ill post some pics up tonight when I get home from work.
cali-ti
04-13-2005, 05:45 PM
lol ... i was just giving you crap :p you're not a moron. a clicking sound and a wheel emblem is nothing compared to your diff bearings failing and a parking brake cable that almost wore through your hydraulic line :P
mmmmm ... strut bar :) be nice to see how it looks.

Hey Guys, I just checked the SVRA website for the race schedule for Road America May 13-15. Saturday has Track Touring from Noon to 1PM, Sunday has Track Touring from 12:15 to 1:15PM. I mentioned I went on the track about 10 years ago and it was $40, I'm guessing it will probably be $50 now, I believe that's what it costs for the big vintage event in July. Since there is no BMW specific area, we could all meet just to the west of the fence by Porsche Park, that's where everone lines up for the track touring anyway. Here's the page for the event from the SVRA website http://www.svra.com/SVRA/SVRAHome.nsf/weblinks/EJEN-674PWB?OpenDocument

no change in 10 years? i think a $10 "raise" wouldn't be that unreasonable. i'm dumping $200 in a rental car for a week while i wait for my "new" used halfshaft :(

The weekend is fast approaching, wanted to know who all is going to the Road America event. I haven't been following the weather closely but I guess it is supposed to rain a few days and clear up for the weekend. Just wanted to know who is going so we can pick a time/meeting place. I would prefer Saturday, I remember reading DustenT wanted Saturday too. So, cali-ti, m44ic, DustenT, others.... what do you guys think?
cali-ti
05-10-2005, 04:22 PM
don't know yet. my car is sitting at rauch waiting for the damn parts to be shipped from ireland engineering (they're waiting on the rear camber/toe kits). they were supposed to be shipped late last week, but i haven't heard anything yet this week (checked last friday and he said they should ship "early next week"). had wanted to do brakes before going too, but i think i'll be lucky to even get my car back before the weekend now.
EDIT: called ireland engineering and they supposedly shipped on 9 may (monday) via UPS 2nd day air. it SHOULD be here tomorrow and then i'm driving the parts down to rauch (not far away from my work). not sure if they'll be able to finish by friday night, but there is at least a glimmer of hope. even if they don't, i may go anyway. when/where are you guys meeting to head up there?
mickd

cali-ti, no response from anyone other than you. Hope you make it, I know how much work you've been doing on your car. If you are still in WI June 25-26, there's always June Sprints. Hope the remaining work on your car goes well.

well mickd, it might just be you and i. i may check and see if my friend wants to go as well. we could potentially all meet up and take one car (although if mine is done, i might want to take it). i would really like to have the brakes done before going on the track though. i guess let me just see if they get my car done, with all they have to do and who knows how many other jobs they booked while i was waiting to find out when my damn parts were going to show up, i'm guessing it won't be done by friday evening. what are your thoughts? if my friend goes and he comes to my place first, delafield would be on the way (94). what path were you going to take to get there? i've only been there once or twice and don't remember at all how to get there.
mickd
05-11-2005, 04:17 AM
cali-ti, I usually take I-43 to 57, sometimes 67 north if I want to take a scenic route. If I got an early start I could swing by your place if your car isn't done, it's a straight shot up I-43. Just was hoping there would be a better turnout, I had these images in my head of a string of ti's together on the track, thought that would be so cool. Oh well, we'll see how it goes. And if you want to ride up, that's cool.
cali-ti
05-11-2005, 04:22 AM
wait ... are you in delavan or delafield? delafield is just off 94 between milwaukee and madison, isn't it? my friend lives in whitewater. he may or may not have plans and i'm not sure when he'll know either. the joy of trying to make plans :p
a string of ti's would be cool ... oh well, there's always another time :)

cali-ti, I'm in Delafield, just off I94. It's between Oconomowoc and Pewaukee. The exits for Delafield are C (to the west) and 83 (to the east). Yeah, there's always another time. So when are you leaving WI, be here for the Sprints?
cali-ti
05-11-2005, 04:49 AM
it's looking like i'll be moving around the first weekend of july (2-3). perhaps that's when the movers will be leaving philly with my girlfriend's stuff and her parents stuff. if so, it'll take a day or two for them to get here and load up my stuff (i have far more than her and her parents combined, lol). that's what it's looking like now. have to fly out to denver to look at apartments, guessing that'll be the second weekend in june (11-12).

Cali-ti, so this might be your last RA outing as a resident of Hell? Yeah, I know, winters are bad. I guess most of us around here say "We appreciate summer that much more". If I didn't have most of my family and relatives here I'd be gone to New Mexico. One thing I have always been proud of as a Wisconsinite is Road America. Would miss it if I left. So, I'll be going this weekend, hope your car gets done and keep me/us posted.
cali-ti
05-11-2005, 05:37 AM

i'll definitely let you know what's going on as the week proceeds.

the shop would prefer to have my car for a WEEK so there's no way it will be ready before this weekend. they have a lot of other jobs and what i'm having them do will take a good while as well. so i'll have my swanky nissan sentra rental car (wooo wooooo). either day should be fine. i'll check with my buddy and see if he can/wants to go.

Quillbro, We could meet at the park and ride at, say, 8:00AM. Then we drive into Milwaukee and hook up with cali-ti. We would be at the track around 10:00AM. If you want to leave earlier it's OK with me. I checked the RA website for ticket price. In advance they were $15, don't know how much they'll be at the track, probably not much more. I'd guess $20. That includes pit pass. What a deal! The track touring is probably $40. We'll have to check that out as soon as we get to the track, a reason why I might want to leave at 7:00AM. I'll bring my camera, I'll post a group shot when we get back. Cali-ti, wish you had your car up there. My '95 was bought new in Feb '96 and after a short while I realized I would have this car a long time. It's like a car you got rid of and regretted it, told myself I wouldn't make that mistake again. Better to mod if you like a car than to buy for the sake of "newness". Well, anyway, I wanted to see what a 200K+ ti was like. I'm hoping you keep that car, you've been invaluable with all the info you have supplied on maintaining a higher milleage car. I was wondering about the clutch, my original is fine with 124K, never knew you could get 200K. That's unbelievable, I might have 76K left! Sorry for rambling. I'm looking forward to the weekend, I live for the races at RA.

05-12-2005, 01:34 AM
207k and going strong, don't even feel any slipping :) believe me, i'd love to have my car there too. it'd be lighter right now with the rear interior out, lol. i bought mine 12 oct 1996 when it had ~300 miles. i don't mind putting a significant amount into it to keep it going for another 200k. i KNOW the car pretty well now and know its state of service/repair, etc. worth more to me than i'd be able to sell it for so i see no reason to get a new car right now (although a number of people, including my gf, have suggested it). don't worry, i'm keeping it  powdercoated brake calipers are going on when i get it back ...
maybe the mall right off moorland (sp?) road would be good? forget the name of it right now ... have a failed disk i need to get called into sun service right now so my mind isn't working so well :p it's on the north side of 94 just off moorland. should be easy on/off. what time are we looking at meeting there?

8:00am sounds good to me, ill bring my DVD handycam too, maybe some in car vid! hahaha
So im penciling this in its Official see you at the parkand ride. Im gonna try to get one of my friends to come too he has a teal colored bmw ti....but hes usually a lamo pouring over books. hahah

Cali-ti, thought we could meet in Milwaukee, closer to the lake, cause it's quickest up I43. How about meeting at the end of Wisconsin Ave right where it bends and turns into Prospect by Veterans Park, down by the lake? There is a restaurant right at the bend so there is parking, and being Sun. AM there probably won't be many cars there.
cali-ti

I know, there aren't any of the outside. btw, the calipers and dif look great. Good to see another color other than red on the calipers. Ever since I saw an SRT4 with the red calipers I am starting to think red calipers have gotten too trendy. Those Ireland Engineering pieces look good. I was going to ask what color is it, just noticed from one shot it's blue.

it's the damn metallic aqua. don't like it, but oh well. there was a sport ti with sunroof with one of the blue's that i WANTED at the same time i bought mine, but it was a damn automatic and there was no way i could do that to myself. i really didn't care about the cali top either, i would have preferred the sunroof. would be interesting to have an m3 engine swap in the cali though ... maybe a first?
i go more for understated/simple ... i don't want red crap standing out (brakes). mostly, i don't want it to rust ... ever :)

was it an R32 behind us or a jetta? couldn't really tell from the side mirror and didn't really look behind us. with any car, i think the driver's skill with that particular car have more to do with it than the capabilities of the car itself. there's a woman at my work who races an R32 and she says she eats up people in 911s and other more capable cars than hers, but they don't yet know how to drive them. that said, your ti certainly handled well (within our limited confines of that damn pace car and, even more so, that pontiac) and you seem to know it very well too :)

was it an R32 behind us or a jetta? couldn't really tell from the side mirror and didn't really look behind us. with any car, i think the driver's skill with that particular car have more to do with it than the capabilities of the car itself. there's a woman at my work who races an R32 and she says she eats up people in 911s and other more capable cars than hers, but they don't yet know how to drive them. that said, your ti certainly handled well (within our limited confines of that damn pace car and, even more so, that pontiac) and you seem to know it very well too :)
i sure hope you got some pics of the sentra in there too mike! LOL
btw, what made you guys pull over? couldn't believe we caught up to you guys.
I can't remember who in our group said it but I was told it was an R32. You probably know as well as I, having a car (that you are very fond of) for almost ten years, you get to know it well. Now that I got the 40's on it I am learning the car again, only it has much higher capability. Isn't it cool that you can have a car for almost 10 years and still get excited about it? Sorry Eric, I would have got some shots of the Sentra if you would have parked next to us LOL.

318? umm....i think i drive a z3. (is that what model number it is?)
the Silver M belongs to a guy named jason, hes on the bimmerforum boards, really nice guy too. Not a prick like some m owners i know of. I also had a smashing time! I think im gonna do the DASC conversion. I was sick of pulling away in the twisties just to have a mr2 spyder gain on the straights, (kinda a defeating purpose) By the way mike, I smoked my tails, fender signals, and bumper marker lights today, they sick as hell! :2gun: maybe not as clean as yours though, plus your car is black so its perfect, but I love how my fender signals blend in with the car now.

it was an r32, there was the black one (behind mike) and then there was a silver one that wasnt on the track. but I think mike was right, either the driver didnt know what he was doing or the car just couldnt hang in there but mike was pulling away pretty quick through the turns.......not quite as fast though as me pulling from the 92 ford taurus a few cars back:hahano:

I know I talked with several of you at the RA get together about doing a motor swap. The more I think about it, I really don't want to remove an engine that has been so good to me all these years. Think I'll go DASC. When the engine needs rebuilding, I'll probably do the motor swap. I saw a thread a while back on a prototype intercooler for the DASC and I know there are a few brands of undersize pulleys, figured with a bit of work I might get stock E36 M3 performance. I also worried about changing the balance of the car with a heavier motor, the stock sport suspension is so good as-is.
cali-ti
05-20-2005, 01:28 AM
4 + DASC probably still doesn't have the torque curve of the m3 even if HP is in the same ballpark (probably 200+ vs 240). rauch has installed a number of DASCs as well (even one somebody picked up used) :)
not sure of the weight difference between m3 6 and m42 + DASC. may not be that much different. if you're going to do the work, the DASC is certainly the cheaper path. the "problem" is, the m42 may never die so you'll never get that m3 engine swapped in :p
mickd
05-20-2005, 01:54 AM
The DASC isn't bad torque wise, from the dyno chart on the Downing-Atlanta website it peaks at 200 ft/lbs @ 4500RPM, the '95 M3 3.0 is 225 ft/lbs @ 4250 http://www.downingatlanta.com/images/power&torque.PDF. I guess the main reason I probably won't do the swap is because I don't want to get rid of the faithful M42.
cali-ti
05-20-2005, 02:15 AM
hmmmm ... anyone have torque/power curves for stock euro/us 3.0 and 3.2 m3 engines? be an interesting comparison. peak isn't the only important number :)
i fully understand why you'd do the DASC. it's damn reliable. really see few to no complaints about it. going to do the install yourself?

keep in mind Mike, if we DASC we're gonna need OEM m3 clutches and flywheels, and maybe some other stuff too.
it could get $$ realy quick, but i guess im prepared if you are.
also, the m3 is heavier than the 318 and the Z3 1.9l but if I DASC im for sure gonna yank my power/heated seats. They are soooo heavy. I heard somewhere about 60lbs a piece. Then I could put 15lb seats in there and save myself a solid 90 lbs on that alone. and then......I could start yanking all kinds of **** out of there.....
you know a bently has **** loads of horsepower but its so heavy that a minivan could whoop it. Well, not a minivan but you get the point. Thats why the lotus elise is beating Vettes off the line, 190hp vs. 350hp. but its only 1950lbs.
cali-ti
05-20-2005, 12:29 PM
hp alone doesn't get the job done. many things have to be designed/combined well for a car to do many things well. the vette will stomp all over the elise in top speed (200mph vs 140-150?). hp vs torque, how one needs to rev, where to shift ... all these things are going to play into how well one car does and drives vs another. usually, 4 cylinders don't have anywhere near the torque band that a 8 will. the DASC will certainly improve that for you guys :) the hp/weight ratio i really like is the mclaren F1  600hp/2500lbs ... woooo hoooooooo
you'll certainly save weight chucking the seats, but you won't do much to correct for and bring front/rear weight balance back since the seats are about in the middle of the vehicle. i forget, is the battery in the front of the 4-cyl z3? what about the 6-cyl models? try to move that to the trunk and you'll do a good bit to regain the stock front/rear weight distribution.
you may not NEED to do m3 clutch/flywheel, but it might be a good idea. how is your stock clutch now? people have even driven m3 engined ti's on stock parts for a good while if they drive smartly. obviously, if you're going to be dumping the clutch a lot under power, it probably won't take it for long. mike has the LSD and will probably be fine in that respect. what about you evan? you might want to consider that swap if you don't have it already. not sure what LSDs were offered on the z3s over the years. you could mess with ratios there to gain acceleration too (at the possible loss of top end ... although you probably won't notice it going from stock to DASC).
should be fun projects everyone's working on ... now i'll have to find something for myself to do :p

yeah the battery was mounted in under the hood but I moved it over the right rear tire. Also the limited slip diff I havent thought too much about, maybe I should start. I know Randy Johnson makes something for that. Also i dont dump my clutch but I can still feel slipage sometimes just going from 1st to second i can only notice it every now and then but id wanna replace it all.

ireland engineering poly subframe and rear trailing arm bushings: GOOD
ireland engineering rear adjustable camber and toe kits: GOOD
ireland engineering front camber plates: NOT GOOD, get something else like bavauto/KMAC front camber/caster kit
e30 LSD: GOOD
supersprint exhaust: GOOD
rear end is PLANTED and SOLID now. i'll be exploring the limits in time, but even with questionably good/decent bridgestone potenza re950s in stock size on 15" rims, the back end feels pretty damn sweet around corners. limited drive time so far and looking forward to more. doing brakes this weekend. possibly belts/tensioners/pulleys as well, see how much time we have. need to tweak exhaust placement if possible (tip is damn close to the bumper cover and i'm worried it could melt it (when i went to pick it up, it was full on against it so i had them try to tweak it but he did so without putting it on the lift again ... hard to do with car on the ground).

Eric, how did your suspension turn out? haven't followed the board that close lately. My AC has leaks, hasn't worked in a long time but I planned on having it fixed soon. I always hated how much power the A/C robbed, I never used it much. With the heat we've been having, I would sacrifice a few horses.
cali-ti

suspension is pretty damn nice. poly trailing arm bushings squeak but it's not intolerable. all solid bushings transfers more noise (diff ring/pinion mostly) and is certainly a big stiff over large bumps, but it tracks and hooks up on the corners way better than it did before.
i just had all my coolant/water hoses, radiator, water pump, water valve, belts, pulleys, tensioners and a number of other associated/related parts replaced. they also tracked down and repaired a fuel smell under the driver's side access panel beneath the rear seat.
i had my AC checked because on hot days, i didn't think it was as cold as it used to be. they cycled the refrigerant out, weighed it and cycled it back in, indicating it was still full (after 208k!). i was figuring i'd need a recharge, but i guess not

Eric, I missed this one, sorry. I have 17 X 7.5 '95 Motorsport wheels with 235/40 17 Michelin Pilot Sports. Stock sport suspension. Can't believe how good the ride is with this setup, I'm just really getting used to the cornering ability. I broke the tires loose in a slow turn upshifting to second the other day. I'm glad that I can still slide the car around, only at higher speeds. The Pilot Sports break loose very controlably, I really like 'em.

17X8 would be better, not so limited in tire width like the 7.5's. The SSR's are nice wheels. Glad you liked the ride, I had so much fun. I love that track. Still don't know if I have the Carousel down yet, whether to apex 2 or 3 times.

no problem mike :) cool. there are many rims that are either 17x8 or 18x8 that i would consider. i'd really like a set of the SSRs as they're quite lightweight compared with others. i have a lot of other things to do before i get bigger rims though. glad you're happy with your setup, it was damn nice on the road america track.
my bud has the SSR competitions 17x8 on his 240, they are damn light
I ordered bilstein sports today and I will order H&R's next week. in a month or so I want to get BBS RK's 17x8, it hasnt been too bad without A/C :2gun: although the last couple days have been tough. I've been working so much I havent had time to throw in my B&M yet :ashamed: .
Eric nice to see you on here, how is the new pad and Denver?

Eric nice to see you on here, how is the new pad and Denver?haven't moved yet, but very soon! we arranged for a duplex that's literally a half a mile from where she'll be working so she can walk or ride her bike most of the time (she hates driving - which means when we do drive somewhere i get to drive ). 1500 sq ft, 3 bedroom, 2 car garage (not attached, but about 10 ft to the back door), all appliances, built in 2004. should be ok for a year until we get a house. thanks for asking :)
looks like you guys had fun!

the funny thing about that vid is that everyone thought I had exhuast, but it was really just the loud ass growling my CAI makes when I get on it.

yeah, for just intake its loud as hell, probably cuz I removed the MAF screens and cuz of the heat shield must make it louder.

cali-ti, Ive been meaning to ask you how do you like the 3.73? whats it like on the highway? I really want one but I am worried it will be too short for Highway driving.

depends on how fast you normally drive. i was getting to the point where i was cruising regularly at 80mph @ around 3750 RPMs. the acceleration is definitely quicker and i've been partaking in that quickness more often than i used to (decreasing my fuel economy in the face of rising fuel prices ... OH WELL! lol). cruising at 80mph now puts it around 4000 RPMs or a little higher, which has actually pushed me more towards cruising at 75-77mph instead (probably a good thing). the LS vs open is not even a contest, i LOVE the LSD. combined with the rear suspension mods, i love the way it hooks up and carves the corners. if NOTHING else, at least get a 3.45 LSD out of a club sport. if you're planning an engine swap later, you may want to wait on a diff swap (so you can pick an appropriate ratio for the swap you do). i guess even considering that, put in a large case diff (i would recommend bmw reman'd e30 halfshafts over used though if it's a daily driver) and then you can always swap for another large case diff with your preferred ratio when you do the swap.
on my way home tonight, i even ran it up past 100mph a couple times and the acceleration from 80 or so was still pretty damn quick ... i don't much do that speed or higher so it works for me :)

if NOTHING else, at least get a 3.45 LSD out of a club sport.
Eric, you could get the LSD on a '95 as an option, mines got it, was hard to find when when I got my ti new. Specified it as a "must have" along with the sport package, manual trans, and Jet Black.

07-23-2005, 06:28 AM
yeah ... so you just have to search more to find someone smart like you who got the optional LSD. they dropped it when they went to traction control (bastards!).
