I won a 318 e36 (92-98-) s3.45 locking diff. Paid 301. Good deal?

I have researched and I belive this is the one that will bolt right in. I did however see a post that said new half shafts are needed. Or is that just for the e30 diff.

I saw several misc. parts on bavauto's site. Seals bolts things like that, do you gents know if I need and any other parts?

Thanks

Sounds like a good deal. Just wonder how many miles it had.
LSD clutch packs need to be replaced from time to time.

I saw that diff prior to it closing. I thought an E36 diff would not fit our cars. The rear cover has a symetrical dual bushing mount. If that is the case, why didn't anyone ever say an E36 diff fits our cars? All we hear about is E30 diffs.

That is my whole point! If it is not a 318ti diff, it won't work. The rear cover can be swapped, but the holes are not there up front to bolt the diff in.

I still believe it is not a E30/E36 issue but a 4 cylinder/6 cylinder issue. Then again someone onthe ti yahoo list just installed a E30 6 cylinder diff with no problems. Just had to swap the flanges.

This is getting more confusing by the minute. Look at the mounting on these two diff, they have different holes.

This is the 318ti

How could they both fit the 318ti, even if they had the same rear cover????

I believe l84thsky is right. The E30, E36/5 (ti) and E36/7 (Z3) diffs are interchangeable (with minor tweaking) but the standard E36 diffs are different because of the different rear suspension.

Bummer  , Obviously its the 318is. Someone mentioned changing out the cover? Get the part from bmw? Or could I use parts from my existing diff.? Now im thinking i should just sell it again....... damn :shakefis:

Thanks L8THSKY.

just pull out the one in your car and compare the mount points on the covers if they work swap them and call it a day. They are both the small pumpkin diffs so just give it a try

steven, someone else on the yahoo list posted that there was concern over the flange length differences between the ti flanges and the e30 flanges. i'd rather be safe than sorry and swap in the e30 half shafts. i got a response from gerry on the yahoo list regarding what to do about clearance issues with the ABS sensors: check it by hand when you get the half shafts in to see if there is a clearance issue; if there is, you'll need to space the ABS sensor out until it no longer contacts (my recapping what he said, not his exact words).

I dont think the covers would be possible to swap. Do you think i could swap the internal parts?

I called a Transmission shop about installing a LSD unit into a diff housing. They said the cost of the work and setting it up properly was more than the total value of the whole diff.

hey L8, do you know what LSDs were available for 6-cyl z3s? perhaps you could source one from there.
