View Full Version : Neg. camber = don't rotate your tires?? Advice needed

I was talking to a guy at a local wheel-shop and he was telling me that rotating tires that have been subject to negative camber (i.e. the back wheels of my lowered Ti) will result in tire blowout. He told me that this is due to the fact that the steel belts have warped on the sidewalls where the most pressure is exerted from the neg camber.

I’ve never heard of this myself, can anyone verify this claim? I’m thinking this guy just wants to sell me a new set of tires.

If you start cording you will have a problem.
Monitor the condition and flip them as necessary.
My inside right rear is wearing very quickly.
I'm replacing the subframe bushings, trailing arm bushings and stabilizer links.
Basically everything that is rubber. Then I'll have it realigned.
Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

The only limit on tire rotation I know of is don't run directional tread
backwards in the wet. Other than that you can rotate side to side,
front to rear, LR to LF - Lf to RF - RF to RR - RR to LR(Orbit).

Bias ply tires are still somewhat picky but for the most part modern tires
can be rotated in any fashion that makes them wear evenly.

Heck we set a track record in our 200SX turbo and didn't notice
til later that we had swapped the directional tires to the wrong
sides. All 4 were turning backwards. (According to the sidewall arrows.)
But it was perfectly dry and 68 degrees out.

No worries.

A good question...I've worn my rears down so that an entire section (one out of 5) is worn smooth to the groove. (Didn't mean to rhyme...just happened.) My only worry about rotating those worn tires to the front would be when it came to cornering. I know the back would grip better, but I'd worry about the front.

(I'm going to order new wheels and tires from Tire Rack soon, so no worries, but until then...)

We shave all but 1/32 off DOT tires to race on them....

As long as its dry the lack of tread doesn't hurt anything....
If its wet teh pucker factor goes up.

hehehe.......pucker factor

Anyways, i think the guy was just trying to sell me a new set of tires, im gonna go ahead and rotate them as i always have, neg. camber or not....At least now i can blame you guys if my tires blow up ;)

About every third rotation you can dismount them and side to side them.
That will help some.

Good Luck

First of all I would like to say I don't know jack, BUT either do most of the tire places I have been too. I think most places actually get pissed after they realize that you realize they're lying idiots.

For what it's worth, the Bentley manual claims that BMW does not endorse tire rotation because the uneven wear can cause weird handling behavior. Or...BMW's in league with the tire companies. One or the other.

i worn my rear ones a bit on the insides quite alot, the front ones look near new....
since i should have probably rotated them alot sooner than i did, shoul di just keep wearing the rears down until i need new ones them start the rotation at designated intervals??? as the front ones have lots of tread and even wear.

Seems to be the case in the UK that tyre rotation was used years ago when everybody ran on crossplys, but now tyre rotation with radials is not recommended due to tyres taking on a "set" in relation to suspension geometry.
And my BMW main stealer specifically warns against tyre rotation.

Having said that all I read in various forums indicate that you lot across the pond still rotate every few thousand miles or so, must be to spread the load out on those covered wagons? :2gun:
