View Full Version : disassembling e30 diff

i would like to have the housing of the e30 differential i'm going to install powdercoated before i install it. they said i would have to be completely disassembled in order to powdercoat it.

how big a deal is this and am i stupid to even consider it? concerns i have:

i'm already getting or have the following new parts in the diagram below: 1 (with 2), 3, and 6.

can i remove the bearings and other parts (4, 5, 7, 8 and 9) and reinstall them again later without negative effects or am i just asking for serious problems?

also, i ordered parts 2, 3 and 5 from the diagram below (1 and 4 are not available):

again, can i remove the flange and disassemble/reassemble the remaining parts without ill effect?

i've never been "inside" a diff so i don't know what all i'll need to do even if all the above is possible.

if i shouldn't disassemble and get it powdercoated, would there be any problems with degreasing/pressure-washing/bead-blasting it and then painting it? the original drive shaft and half-shaft flanges are all still in place as is the diff cover (which will be replaced with a new m-finned diff cover). i'm worried about any beads/sand getting into the gears inside. would i be able to remove the drive shaft flange to put in the new dust cover (#2) and shaft seal (#5) without anything bad happening? then i could at least get all the rust off the flange at the same time. it appears the drive shaft flange nut uses loctite yellow (if such a thing exists?). not sure if the bentley manual lists a torque setting for that nut.

if pics of any parts of the diff would help, let me know and i'll try to post some.
