Hello, I am looking to purchase a 1998 318ti. It needs work: F&R Brakes, Airbag, One tire, Radiator and Cat. Converter and it has a minor oil leak (new seals). Asking is $1200. Thoughts/comments?? The car has 150K. Total cost to repair $2,000.
Thanks

I think you should keep looking untill you find one in better condition. You will come across another one at somepoint.

The warranty was extended for the 98 for the cat. Was it in an accident that it needs an airbag? Sounds like it is in pretty bad shape. Also sounds like a can of worms.

I had my Cat replaced in 2002. It was covered under some 85,000 mile warranty. The warranty was listed in my owners manual.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for responding. I have talked the owner down to $500 (they VERY well off and are moving to Arizona). Here is the work it needs per a very reputable BMW garage: F & R brakes; Radiator (Replace); Repair Main Oil Seal; Replace Front Air Bag Clock Spring. Now the biggies: The Check Engine Light is lit. He said codes 123 (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor) and 15 (Oxygen Sensor - Pre-Catalyst) need replacing. The entire Catalytic Converter (40) may also need replacing. Thoughts comments?/ As a reminder it is a 1998 w/150K miles. Thanks.

When my car was showing a CEL all that I needed to replace was the O2 Sensor. The mechanic said its usually just a fualty sensor in the OBDII system when a CEL is thrown. I have a 96 Sport with 77K miles if it helps.

The cat may be covered under warranty.
Brakes are easy DIY jobs.
02 sensors go all the time.
Is the radiator leaking? The are either good or bad, no in between.
You are looking at a couple grand in repairs.
Hehehe, I just noticed your first post. $2000 sounds right.

It seems to have a lot of things wrong. :(

I thought the owner lowered it to $500, I didn't realize that was the price.
For $500 I'd swap the engine, put in 330 brakes and M3 suspension.

WOW good deal hows the body? Not wrecked?

I think any 98 car is worth 500 bucks geez...brakes sensors etc all wear and tear stuff. Seals and a radiator are both things that anyone might have to replace at 150k.
