Its getting close to the time that I should change my oil. I read the "what oil are you running" thread but im more interested in what everyone is running now, ie. that summer is approaching here in San Diego. Thanks for the help.

Lubromoly Volysnthese? Obviously foreign, but where is that made? (To tell you the truth, I don't know what the mechanic puts in there....just that it's synthetic.)

Made in Germany and a great product. I use 15w50 Mobil 1 every 5000kms (about 3000 miles).

Cheers,

The last time they changed it they put in Mobil 1 10w40 synthetic and I'm thinking about sticking with the same thing this time around.

it's usually best to stick with the same brand and formula. weight sounds about right for your temperatures.

Hardcore rap? rock? I've got a rather wide range of music interests.

hardcore as in metal- - i.e. Norma Jean, Bleeding Through, etc. etc.

your avatar looks like something we do in the pit at hardcore shows here......

I've looked for the thread mentioned here and can't seem to find it here in the maintenance room. I'm going to change my oil some time in the next month and want to be prepared. We have a 1998 318ti, and we live in Indiana. How does this oil look? Should I get something locally instead of ordering over the net with $6.00 shipping? Do you recommend something other than 5W-30?

Thanks for any feedback

i hope that shipping charge isn't for ONE quart! if so, outrageous!

i use lubro moly voll-synthese 10w-40 year 'round. lubro moly is one of if not the only oil approved by bmw for use in its cars. i like to stock up when bavauto has it on sale. i buy the 5 liter jug (good for one change) and then a couple single quarts for topping off between changes. i use 10w-40 due to the high mileage i'm at (207k).

i'll admit, the voll-synthese looks WEIRD ... like you're putting grey sludge into your engine, but it's good stuff.

Thank you very much for the lead. I'll plan on buying the same oil you do...buying in 5L jugs sounds very convienient as it's the perfect size.

that should have read, "besides their own oil" (ie, bmw sells their own which is of course approved :p)

"Right, we manufacture this stuff but it's just garbage really."

i believe bmw synthetic is manufactured by castrol, so that's "approved" as well. but, not sure what that means, probably only when your motor is still under warranty really.

benz and porsche use mobil1 for first-fill on several models, so that's "approved" for me.

truth be told, all the manufacturers have a similar top-shelf oil. i'd be comfortable with most brands out there, but the idea is to stick with the same lube.

I use Mobil1 0w-40 year 'round in Minneapolis.

But, I've been thinking of trying the Voll-Synthese because of that handy 5 liter bottle.

think wal-mart has mobil 1 in larger capacity jugs too, possibly 5 liter.

I am on the Freeway alot going around 70-80mph from Riverside to San Diego, I use 5 40 synthetic. I get an average of 360miles per tank. with 91%, I can the air filter every 5k, tire rotated every 5k, full wheel aliment every 10k, and just learned I have to change my spark plugs, fuel filter, and cabin filters. (eye roll).

oooo ... cabin filters are fun! check www.unofficialbmw.com for the procedure (you go in through the engine compartment). spark plugs and fuel filter aren't bad. i'm surprised you're not getting a higher average miles/tank being where it's nice and warm all the time. my mileage goes up considerably during the warmer weather months.
